Swine Flu News

Since we posters can't very well open up a swine flu board ourselves, in the meantime I find it very easy to skip over the swine flu threads that I don't want to read. It's really very simple.

I agree.. Kind of like what I always had to do with the many, many political threads.. Just whizzed right by 99% of them..:thumbsup2

My son has an appointment tomorrow to get the H1N1 mist. This has been a countdown. He had gotten the seasonal mist and then 3 days later we got a our only single shipment of H1N1 vaccine so far. Anyhow, there was no way I thought those doses would last 25 days, I figured they'd be gone. I asked today before I went home and was told we still had about 60 doses, so he was good to get an appointment. That put my mind a little at ease. Now, I just have to get him through the next 2 weeks to get optimal immunity for this season, and then hope for the best. We're expecting a shipment of shots on Monday...so I'm waiting on that too as I cannot get the mist.

Oh congrats!:woohoo: I know you've been waiting. And, then yes, that 'countdown to immunity" begins! TOmorrow will be day 8 since my second son got vaccinated....YAY. And one week for my sister who's been so sickly the last few years (hospitalized for pneumonia twice, once quite a close call....)...I actaully cried when I found out she'd been able to get it (as I did when my asthmatic son got his first shot) Take good care.:goodvibes

has anyone heard if H1N1 is causing a rash sometimes? DD16 showed me like 4 "bug bites" she found yesterday on her abdomen. Then, last night, there were 9 just on her abdomen and sides. She had just become fever free, after being sick for 5 days, and felt much, much better except the itchy bumps (nearly the size of mosquito bites).

Fever with a rash is one of the 'emergency warning signs'. However, since she no longer has a fever there likely isn't need to panic. As long as she's breathing comfortably, I would merely call the doctor's office and ask their advice. If she isn't breathing comfortably, take her to the ER.

That being said, her symptoms remind me more of strep throat than H1N1. How was she diagnosed?

Rest of family had H1N1, so best guess. She really, really had same symptom as rest of us till the rash started yesterday and throat is still sore. She's on day 6. Rest of us ditched the sore throat after just a couple of days.

The update is that I called the pediatricians office x2 today. They have no sick appts left anyway, but told me if fever returns to take her somewhere. Otherwise, keep an eye on her...she is improving, although slowly. Today, she says she just feels overall NOT well, throat still sore (but not as bad as before), and head pounding. The dr thinks she needs to take it easy and re-hydrate herself slowly but steadily.

OH, they also mentioned that when weakened with H1N1, strep (and other bacteria) sometimes set up shop and take over...they are seeing some (not many) strep throats following this flu.

Another update, dd11 (was sick for a week LAST week) just called from school. I had to go get her, she feels like throwing up. I have felt like that all day today -- and am supposed to be driving dd11 and dd7 (who isn't ill, KNOCK on wood) out of town this afternoon for a dance competition tomorrow. Don't know what to do with dd11 now...could be queasy from a quicky tummy bug, or could be starting a new illness. EEK.

WILL THIS EVER END? NO MORE ILLNESSES IN MY HOUSE, I need a break!!

Bless your heart!

I hope your family all starts to feel much better soon!

That rash could be the start of scarlet fever, which develops from strep sometimes. Lots of people get a headache with strep. NOt everyone gets a fever with it either. DS has has strep around 6 times and only had fever once. If her throat is hurting and she feels unwell, I would get a strep swab. I wouldn't wait until Monday. I believe the CVS minute clinics test for strep, or maybe an urgent care place?

Something to keep in mind-flu viruses love dry weather- they thrive in it. It has been a very, very humid, moist fall-at least here in Western NY.

We have a confirmed case in my school with a little one now on life support. (The school has only informed parents that it's a confirmed case, not that it may be fatal... Staff wasn't suppose to know who it was or how severe it was either, but the parent of the child told us.)

Posting this because of the statistics.....for those of you waiting to get your vaccinations. this was posted on the Fox news web page from the CDC.....millions have been infected....but have only suffered mild illness....that is good news. The bad news is that out of the 1,000 deaths of the 5.7 million that have been infected, 114 of them have been children. But still as sad as that is, 114 children out of 5.7 million infected is good.

The CDC also reported that swine flu is widespread now in all but two states. Health officials estimate that many millions of Americans have been infected, though most suffer only mild illness.

More than 1,000 Americans have died from H1N1 since it was first diagnosed in April. About 36,000 Americans die each year from seasonal flu.
At least 5.7 million people were infected with H1N1 infected from mid-April through July 23, the CDC said this week.

Scarlet fever rash doesn't look like bug bites. My son had scarlet fever last spring, it is a very fine rash (lots and lots of very small bumps, too many to count) and it spreads very quickly.

This article does not really make sense. I don't think it is 114 children out of 5.7 million children, but out of the US Pop. Not sure how many children had it. The numbers are through July, but the children's deaths ae current. I think the 1000 deaths may have been through July?? It is a strange mix of details. I just can't wade through that article.

I usually use the CDC site for numbers though.

The CDC's numbers for how many could have been infected are based only on a model. They are not based on seriology or confirmed lab cases. Take the numbers with a grain of salt.

It is 114 children out of the 1000 dead reported.

Remember, only 28 of the states have reported their deaths and hospitalizations so far.

We do not have exact, written in stone, numbers to work with.

All I know is that there are 114 children who are now dead because they contracted the H1N1 virus. They would not be dead today if they did not get sick first. This is a sneaky virus. We don't know who will have a bad reaction to it.

Have OTC medicines and ORS drinks already in your house. Most of these are good for one to two years. I'm certain it will not be wasted money. The time you save having these on hand, priceless.

Please keep the warning signs to the front of your minds if you or your children are sick.

Best of luck to all of us who may get sick.

My understanding from the CDC report released yesterday is that almost 3,000 have died in the U.S. and 114 were pediatric deaths. I'm concerned about the numbers for next week (the CDC is one week behind in reporting its information). It appears there were at least 18 pediatric deaths that occurred this past week, and several of them appear to be sudden deaths (within 5 days of onset of symptoms) in healthy children.

Could you please go back to the CDC site and get the correct numbers? The number of people who have died from H1N1 is now approaching the 3,000 mark - NOT 1,000..

Thanks! :)

I posted the link from Fox that was from October 30th....it is what they are reporting from the CDC.....and in reality...none of us know for sure what the real tally is.....But it is clear that most are not dieing from it. Most are recovering. That is good news.

If you want the correct info and numbers, go to the CDC - not Fox News..:)

Don't know if this has already been posted but here's a link to the CDC's flu page:
(it looks like the info is for the week of October 18-24, 2009.)
http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/update.htm

Here's a quote from that page:
"The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) based on the 122 Cities Report has increased and has been higher than what is expected at this time of year for four weeks now. In addition, 22 flu-related pediatric deaths were reported this week; 19 of these deaths were confirmed 2009 H1N1, and three were influenza A viruses, but were not subtyped. Since April 2009, CDC has received reports of 114 laboratory-confirmed pediatric 2009 H1N1 deaths and another 12 pediatric deaths that were laboratory confirmed as influenza, but where the flu virus subtype was not determined."
