Swine Flu News

I don't think I'd go for the Tamiflu. You don't want to negate the shot you just gave!

I think that is just for the nasal mist, not shot:
The use of TAMIFLU along with an intranasal flu vaccine like FluMist®* has not been evaluated. However, due to the possibility for interference between these products, an intranasal flu vaccine should not be given within 2 weeks before or 48 hours after taking TAMIFLU, unless it is deemed appropriate by your doctor. The type of flu vaccine administered as a shot through the skin can be given at any time relative to use of TAMIFLU.

Only 13 million have come through. As nervous Americans clamor for the vaccine, production is running several weeks behind schedule, and health officials blame the pressure on pharmaceutical companies to crank it out along with the ordinary flu vaccine, and a slow and antiquated process that relies on millions of chicken eggs.
I just talked to a scientist I know who is very knowledgeable about vaccines and asked her why they still use eggs for the Flu vaccines, when I know that often times vaccine antigens for animal vaccines are grown in bio-reactors. Here's what she said:

1) It's partly due to the FDA being overly cautious. The egg method has a long, stable, track record when it comes to human vaccine production. Given the "controversies" surrounding vaccine use in some very vocal segments of the population, the FDA is very, very reluctant to approve the use of a different method in the fear that something would happen unexpectedly. The egg method also helps prevent possible contamination from secondary organisms that can grow alongside the target antigen in a bio-reactor. If contamination is present, the antigen batches would be lost... if detected. If undetected, well then the FDA might have a problem on its hands.

2) The egg method, though it can be slow, produces a much higher yield of antigen than using bio-reactors.

Check out the website takecarehealth.com. That's where I found the clinic that had the vaccine in the Walgreens.

Good Grief.

Why is this not national news? Why don't I hear about this every time I turn on the TV?

H1N1 has been "overblown" by the media? I don't think so. :headache:
CNN has been reporting this for at least a few weeks.

CNN has been reporting this for at least a few weeks.

You're right. CNN has been reporting about all of the shortages.

I watched a live segment televised from Maryland and the clinic only had 200 doses to give. The clinic was only going to be open from 9:00 am till 12:00 noon but people lined up starting at 12:00 pm the night before. There were 100s of people who were turned away because they ran out and don't know when they'll be getting more.

Deb, I thought Tamiflu was used for seasonal flu before H1N1? What was it used for before this outbreak? Thanks so much for your updates. They are very informative.

I believe it was effective in the past, but the current seasonal flu is resistant.

Hi Deb! I'm in Linn County Iowa. Any word on when we're going to see availability for the Swine Flu vaccine? I have a 5-year old and she and I are heading to Disney in mid-November.

Do you think we'll be able to get our vaccine by then??? Just your opinion...I know nothing is set in stone.

The entire vaccine distribution schedule is in the hands of the public health department, and it is being distributed by state population.

So, here in Iowa, we make up 1% of the nation's population. That means we only get 1% of the H1N1 vaccine. :guilty:

I would recommend you keep calling and checking with your local primary care, hospitals, county health department, etc. It is really a day-to-day thing. I know our Pediatric Clinic got a shipment of 200 doses of the nasal H1N1 vaccine yesterday, and by noon, half of it was gone.

I found the vaccine this afternoon at a Walgreens about 30 minutes from my house. I was really excited and jumped in the car with the kids when they got off the bus. We waited an hour and a half, but all got it.

But here's the kicker. My 8 year old this evening says he's getting a sore throat and feels achy. No fever yet. But now besides worrying if he's got swine flu, I'm worried that he got the vaccine while he was probably already sick. Should I be worried about that? I was reading where it says you shouldn't get the vaccine if you're sick.

I guess we'll be off to the pediatrician in the morning to see about Tamiflu.

What bad things can happen if you're vaccinated while you're sick? I'm a bit worried.

Did he get the nasal spray or the shot? 3 of my family members including myself are on Tamiflu right now, and the package insert says not to take Tamiflu if you had the "intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine" during the past two weeks. However, it does not mention anything about the shot.

Well, after reports that there would be no H1N1 vaccine in our state until early December, imagine my surprise when I found out this morning that my ped has it! I got vaccine appointments for both my girls! :cheer2:

He had the shot, not the mist.

Congrats!!!!:woohoo::yay::cheer2:

There must have been a big shipment over the weekend, as our ped send out an email they had the mist today too.

YAY to those finding it!:thumbsup2:woohoo:

Can you tell me what county? I am in Bergen and I called this week and they had no idea when they were getting them.

I got my son's shot in Ocean County in Tom's River. I am in Gloucester county.

Remember - 8 to 10 days before immunity has occurred. And even then it is NOT a magical force field. Your child can still contract the disease. The vaccine it to help mitigate some of the severity in symptoms and duration.

My youngest (8 years old) was the vaccine trials. He got his second H1N1 shot on the 12th. He is currently home from school today with a fever of 101.3, coughing, runny nose and general malaise. It was up to 102.8 yesterday. I will not know if it the swine flu because Ohio does not test for it unless he is in the hospital or dies. I'm just taking the precautions as if he does. Keeping an eye out for the warning signs. Although I am certain he will just ride it out with OTC medicines and be fine.

I stood in line on Saturday to get my eldest (11 years old) the FluMist version of the H1N1 vaccine. I will be keeping a close eye on him too to quarantine him at the first sign of possible ILI symptoms.

Glad for those who were able to get the vaccine and good luck to those of you still searching.:thumbsup2

Well they just announced two clinics this week(NJ) for the vaccine but I can't get it for my asthmatic dd because she is sick..blah. They are requiring proof of residency though.

My DD12 is STILL home sick..but no fever! Weirdest thing ever. She has been home for 6 days with diarrhea. Her throat is very sore and her breathe is awful..and she just lies around in bed..She seems to be perking up a bit..but I am half tempted to get her checked for strep...If it was just a couple symptoms I wouldn't really wonder..but as I have posted before, her asthma is acting up too. I am praying she has a mild case of the swine and is done with it.

My son is having all sorts of asthmatic issues as of yesterday and was put on a steroid today.. My ped says " don't worry ..go on vacation..he will be fine by then". Maybe things are looking up.

I was so annoyed in talking with a parent today. She was telling me her daughter had 100.9 temperature but went to school. She argued with her mom and she says it is easier just to let her go:scared1::scared1: I just thank god my daughter wasn't there today because she is in some of her classes. Why the heck would you do that with this H1N1 going around?

Looks like NY finally got some in. My grandson's (who went back to school today after being out along with a lot of other kids and staff) school sent home the notice today. Vaccine or mist, your choice at a school clinic Tuesday. Hopefully having more vaccine available will start slowing this flu down in more areas.

Still none available at DGD's school or the pediatricians office.. (Mist or shots.)

Nothing up here - but maybe that's to be expected because of the low population..

Seems they're picking and choosing which areas of NY are receiving it..:headache:

Since we posters can't very well open up a swine flu board ourselves, in the meantime I find it very easy to skip over the swine flu threads that I don't want to read. It's really very simple.
