Swine Flu News

What are the most common symptoms to look for??? I have felt like crap for 3 days but I do not have a fever at all. Could someone have the Swine Flu without having a fever?????:confused3

I was tested tonight in the ER for the Swine Flu -- very scary. It came back negative, though!! :yay:

Things to consider. The rapid swab test has up to a 40% false negative rate. So a negative rapid test does not necessarily mean that you do not have swine flu. Also, about a third of people have no fever with the swine flu.

I thought the rapid swab could only confirm what type? Don;t they have to send out the swab to confirm swine?

All flu at this time of the year is Swine Flu. If you test positive for rapid Type A, then the doctors can safely assume it is Swine Flu because that is a Type A, H1N1 flu.

And a false negatives have a rate of 74%. Per their own manufacturer.

Yes, lots of confirmed hospitalized cases of swine flu presented with no fever.

I talked to my doctor about fever last week when I went in for my asthma checkup. He said that while it might be possible to have swine flu without a high fever, a fever of 102+ has been very characteristic of this disease. He told me not to worry about anything that seemed like a cold unless it was accompanied by a high fever. (He didn't say this part, but I am assuming that if you don't have a high fever you have a very mild case and probably don't need to worry anyway).

I have four kids, between dh (also a teacher) and I, we could be home an awful lot. One son has already had swine flu, hoping he doesn't get it again.

I asked that question to our doctor and he said that unless it mutates , people who had swine will develop immunity to it .....I hope he is right !

I bought masks and oscillococcinum in the spring when the flu broke, so I feel prepared for an outbreak. We will not get the vaccine.

And yet there are people who still insist that it has "gone away" and is no longer a threat in the U.S. - nor are there anymore deaths occuring.. That poor family..:(

I actually talked to one person who insists that this swine flu "scare" was an exercise - planned during the Bush administration - to see how well the CDC could track an epidemic/pandemic "if" one should strike..

This is called a cytokine storm and cytokine storms are also one of the dangers of a vaccine that has been rushed by using a adjuvant to make it. So the body of a healthy young person can over-react to a virus and end up causing death basically by drowning.

You really have to weigh how deadly the virus is (or will be, which is a guess on anybody's part) vs the risks of an adjuvant-made vaccine.

I don't like the sound of this "adjuvant" at all.. Ratchets up the seriousness of making the choice between getting the vaccine or not..

What is "oscillococcinum"? :confused3

I beieve i read that the U.S. would NOT use the adjuvant version. I will have to go check.

There is no way we are getting ourselves or our boys vaccinated. I don't buy for one minute that this vaccine is safe and they just want to use our children as guinea pigs. Look what happend in the 70's when the government went overboard about the swine flu, what a possible epidemic it could become and nothing came of it except a lot of people got sick from the vaccine, some became paralized and some died. No way am I taking a chance with my family. We eat healthy, take probiotics, vit d in the winter, wash our hands etc. I don't think the number of people world wide that have died from the swine flu is that major, enough to cause all this great concern. It's all media hype/scare tactics to get people vaccinated. The amount of people that have died in the US from the "regular" flu since Jan is like 30,000. I believe that number was probably increased also as a scare tactic. Most people in 1918 that died because of the flu died from secondary issues like pneumonia. A lot of people get sick today if they take the anti-flu drugs while suffering from the flu instead of letting it run it's course. If the day comes the government thinks they can vaccinate my ds in school for the swine flu vaccine is the day he no longer attends.

It's more likely they simply won't be able to attend school if they haven't been vaccinated.

My son is contraindicated from getting most flu vaccines because of his egg allergy.

I'll be getting a flu vaccine once it comes around, though.

The FLU KILLS; it's no joke.

From WebMd
Mixing the vaccine with an immune-boosting substance called adjuvant would multiply this number of doses, but might delay the start of vaccine production. Manufacturers already are making massive quantities of adjuvant, but these products aren't yet licensed by the FDA; their use would require emergency authorization.

Moreover, flu viruses are tricky -- and so is the making of a flu vaccine. Lots of snags can slow production. And swine flu could become more severe, making it ethically imperative for the U.S. to use adjuvant to stretch vaccine supplies so they can be shared with other nations.

Adding an adjuvant would delay vaccine production to November, Robinson says, although it might be possible to start making regular vaccine and then switching to production of the boosted product.

What is "oscillococcinum"? :confused3

If you google it, the company that makes will come up. Only one place makes it.

I forgot what is made up of, something to do with ducks. :rotfl2:

It comes in little thin tubes full of tiny white beads - reminds of pop rocks - that are very sweet. You let them dissolve on your tongue and then swallow. One tube every 6? hours.

I cannot vouch for their safety or effectiveness for anyone else. I did however use them this January. My DH brought home a very nasty flu. It hit him hard and fast. Even with us having the flu shot, I was worried about getting it. So I found it at GNC and Walmart - costs way less at Walmart and used for me and the boys (7 & 10). I did start to get the sore throat and ache near the kidneys that DH started with, but for me it never progressed farther than that. Had the aching back for about a week. The boys never had any symptoms. Now whether the oscillococcinum worked or me being completely anal and using lost of Lysol, hand sanitizer and keeping away as much as possible, I don't know. I will use it again though.

Jon Cohen: Hi. Thank you for taking my call. I think there's a lot of confusion about clinical trials. Two days ago five trials did not have adjuvant. They said there would be tests with adjuvant. The companies have spoken of doing clinical trials with adjuvant. The government has purchased it with a separate ingredient that can be mixed and matched. What is the plan for doing clinical trials with adjuvant?

Anne Schuchat: They are planned. They're a set of -- there are several different ways that the trials get summarized. The NIH or National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases is coordinating a set of studies with their vaccine, treatment and evaluation units around The United States. And those are a set of trials that I believe that are listed on their website. The manufacturers will be doing trials in collaboration with the FDA. And of course there are trials being done in other countries on behalf of those other countries vaccine planning efforts. The U.S. has purchased adjuvant as well as antigens and we are expecting to see results from trials of how well adjuvant works in terms of changing the immune response to a given antigen. I don't actually have the details of how many trials with adjuvant and the timelines for the trials but there are definitely plans to look at the behavior of this -- of the vaccine when it is adjuvanted.

Please tell me more about the oscillococcinum-how and when do you take it, are there any people who should NOT take it? I've read a bit about it but need more info. Thanks.

Hi y'all. This is the website. It can give you more info that I can. My dad's friend who is a thoracic surgeon said this is the best stuff! My dad took it when he started with flu symptoms and the symptoms disappeared overnight. Some say it's a placebo effect but the dr. said he takes it and has stocked up for his family in case the flu makes another swing or if a different strain develops. He says in his opinion that it is not a placebo.
Now, I'm not saying it will work for anyone else but it di work for dad.
