Swine Flu News

All flu at this time of the year is Swine Flu. If you test positive for rapid Type A, then the doctors can safely assume it is Swine Flu because that is a Type A, H1N1 flu.

And a false negatives have a rate of 74%. Per their own manufacturer.

July 28: Prepare
Automatically added to News @ July 28th, 2009

The American Red Cross says now is the time to prepare for an H1N1 outbreak by putting together a 2 week H1N1 supply kit.

“Kleenex, medicine, food, canned food. That’s part of a plan,” Campbell says.

You might compare it to a fire-escape plan.

What works in your house might not work in someone else’s house.

An H1N1 plan should be put together the same way.

“Some families don’t need diapers, some families will probably need more medicine than other families,” Lynch says.

And planning ahead could help avoid problems if there is an outbreak.

“And all of a sudden you don’t have your medicine that you need, your high blood pressure medicine, because they’re out of it at the store because half of their workforce is out,” Campbell says.

Red Cross says the time to get prepared for the next outbreak is before school begins.

Read this on another sight and thought it was good info.

the 2nd and 3rd pages here should be seen by everybody...

back in May WHO found 6% to 13% of cases in four nations had no official Fever; doctors had reported even higher %s when they first went down with testing equipment- but I think if only sickest are tested they get less; still the CDC Director's briefs have been saying not all hospitalized cases had fever:
pdf p 14 http://88.80.13.160.nyud.net/leak/us-cdc-swine-flu-9-jun-2009.pdf
as of 5 June, 8% confirmed cases that required US Hospital care ("more than 24 hours" I think is that definition; to keep "hosp." counts lower) had no Fever.

This article is very striking to me because although the majority of cases have been in children 0-20, the majority of deaths have been in people aged 20-59. It is hitting young and middle-aged adults very, very hard (based on the chart on page 2).

Did you happen to see the thread that I started regarding pregnant women possibly being the first in line (before children) to receive the vaccine? 6% of the fatalities in the U.S. were otherwise healthy pregnant women in their second or third trimester.. :(

I had heard that pregnant women would be among the first, but I don't think I saw your thread. Is it a separate thread?

I have mentioned before that I have asthma, so the statistics of how hard it is hitting middle-aged people is worrisome to me (I'm 35). I've just decided to stay informed, to live my life normally (for now, and with the addition of plenty of soap and hand sanitizer), and to pray!

Yes - it's a separate thread - probably back 3 or 4 pages now..

I surely am wondering if I did indeed have the swine flu. Fever for 7 days, cough and then into pneumonia.

It really scares me. I am wondering if this makes me more apt to get it during flu season or less--like I might have a bit of resistance to it. Of course, since I do not know what I had, for sure, I don't and won't know.

I can't live my lfe in fear but I'm really scared of these types of illnesses. Seems like we're *due* for something like this and so many people I have heard of have some crazy sicknesses these days. Sure makes you wonder.

The Pentagon is preparing to make troops available if necessary to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency tackle a potential outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, FOX News has confirmed.

This comes as a government panel recommends certain groups be placed at the front of the line for swine flu vaccinations this fall, including pregnant women, health care workers and children six months and older.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices panel also said those first vaccinated should include parents and other caregivers of infants; non-elderly adults who have high-risk medical conditions, and young adults ages 19 to 24. The panel, whose recommendations typically are adopted by federal health officials, voted to set vaccination priorities for those groups Wednesday during a meeting in Atlanta.

Obama administration officials told Congress that H1N1 vaccinations won't be available for several months.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is preparing to sign an order authorizing the military to set up five regional teams to deal with the potential outbreak of H1N1 influenza if FEMA requests help.

A senior U.S. defense official told FOX News that the plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the FEMA. No final decision has been reached on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it likely would include personnel from all branches of the military.

It is not known how many troops would be needed and whether they would come from the active duty or the National Guard and Reserve forces.

In the event of a major outbreak, civilian authorities would lead any relief efforts, the official said. The military, as it would for a natural disaster or other significant emergency situation, could provide support and fulfill any tasks that civilian authorities could not, such as air transport or testing of large numbers of viral samples from infected patients.

As a first step, military leaders have asked Gates to authorize planning for the potential assistance.

Orders to deploy actual forces would be reviewed later, depending on how much of a health threat the flu poses this fall, the officials said.

FOX News' Jennifer Griffin, Brian Wilson and The Associated Press contributed to this report

Oh heaven help us!!

Not FEMA !!! :eek::eek::eek:

I'm 44 and never sick. But this got me down! There are about 2 days that I do not even remember. The highest my fever got though was 102.7º. But for 7 days straight, it never broke once. It would go down to 100º When it finally broke, that was it. No more fever.

2 weeks before this, DD (15) had what they thought was whooping cough. However, they did not test for it because it was going to runabout $200. for bloodwork and at that moment we did not have health ins. (we were in the process of applying and getting it). They said course of action would be the same--antibiotic so they gave her one.

She did not run a fever but this lasted for 2 weeks. She would cough so much that she'd vomit. Every time a coughing spell hit, she'd cough like she was coughing up a lung and then vomit. After throwing up, she was fine--until the next coughing spell.

Now, I'm wondering...while our symptoms were different, we did have a cough. Her lungs were clear though. I just don't know.

Schools are starting here in the south. Some started today and others start Monday. I guess we'll soon see how that goes. DD is homeschooled but does extra curricular activities with the local HS. I guess I'm just getting a bit nervous about all this. Hopefully understandly so--I was one sick pup. :(

It does sound like you both had something very, very nasty.. It's a shame that they didn't test both of you - just so you would know for sure.. I don't think they'll know until it's back in full swing again if having had it previously will provide some sort of immunity..

I'm sorry to hear that you were both so sick, but if it will provide any immunity for the two of you, it's the "silver lining"..

hey i just browsed this forum. I had swine flu 2 months ago, im a teacher got it from someone at school. Let me tell theres not much to worry about, unless your are usually deathly afraid of the regular flu all the time too. I had body aches anod over a 103 fever. But no vomiting or anything, i tested positive for it, took tamiflu, and tylenol ofr the fever and was fine in 4 days. It was really only bad the first day and a half esp the first night, but i can honestly say ive had 2 bouts with the regular flu that were much worse then the swine flu!

While you might be right, tell that to the people who have died from this--or their families. :sad1:

I had tamiflu and should have taken it. My flu wasn't much different from other flus I have had either until I got pneumonia.
