Swine flu in Mexico and cases found in the US

Has anyone seen the BBC news this morning about the swine flu in Mexico? Apparently there has been 60 deaths and about 1000 infected. There has also now been some cases found in US (only 8 - non fatal). The World Health Organisation (WHO) are monitoring situation. They keep talking about a flu pandemic and saying that it is a case of "when" not "if".

BBC are reporting that Mexico have closed all public places and schools. I may have this wrong, as I was feeding my baby at the time, but they also said to try and avoid going to areas of high crowds, and I don't know if that was directed to the States or just Mexico.

Anyway, we are off to WDW in 3 weeks and will be keeping a close eye on the situation. Hopefully in that time they would have contained it, or in three weeks it could have spread that much more

Keep thinking that WDW gets visitors from all over the world and a lot from Mexico. It would be a good mixing pot for the flu

Try not to worry too much you can bet the DHS will have put measures in place already to reduce the impact this may have on the population. They will most likely tighten regulations and put extra staff on alert at their borders . All imported food stuffs will be tested and inspected before being released for possible comsuption. They are very thorough when it comes to matters like this.
We've noticed in the past many Mexican families arrive to vacation in late May and any time in June but if they think they may be carrying a health risk they can refuse them entry into the country. Personally I trust the DHS to do whatever it takes to keep their borders safe.

My Dh rang me about this earlier, we're heading out to Mexico next month for a wedding before we fly onto Orlando. hope things are kept under control otherwise it's an extra week in Disney!

We are going to Mexico as part of our cruise in 3 weeks. I will survive if I have to miss that port, but I will be devastated if they close the borders to the whole USA!!

Where you stopping Cozumel? we stopped there a few years ago on one of our cruises, we got a taxi and went to senor frogs, needless to say pretty much of that day is a blur!! I remember doing the conga and dancing on the chair and thats about it....

there are 8 cases in NYC (kids who went on spring break to mexico i think), 2 cases in kansas city, 1 in california and i think i heard of a few more in texas....those were all confirmed swine flu...
but there haven't been any deaths in the US....

i heard an analyst this morning say that since we're close to summer, so theoretically, it shouldn't be as bad an epidemic as it might be otherwise..
time will tell..

but there's really nothing you can do about it....
i certainly wouldn't change my plans about visiting the US...

i wouldn't go to mexico city (where most of the cases have been), but i wouldn't change my plans other than that...

Problem is we are expecting a phone call from my SIL to say that her and the kids are not going to come with us. That really is a possibility with her. She really has some serious issues with loss (from her childhood) and it's a miracle she agreed to let the kids on a plane at all (she actually isn't going to let them on some of the rides in Disney). Anyway, there is 12 of us going on this trip, and we are all primed ready for the phone call from her

That's the BBC's latest news - it's spread to New Zealand and Israel, and possibly France I'm taking comfort in the fact that no-one outside of Mexico has died of it yet though, hopefully that's a good sign!

the ones in NZ, Israel and France are all people who just recently returned from mexico (according to the news report i just saw on tv)....
so i guess i'll change what i wrote - i would avoid all travel to any part of mexico right now...

also, a correction to my earlier post - there are 7 confirmed cases in california, 2 in kansas and 2 in texas....the 8 in NY haven't been confirmed yet.....the results are due soon...

also what's scary in the report i just saw - the CDC (center for disease control in the US) says this swine flu is a big surprise - and they haven't even figured out how it spreads yet...
they know it's person to person, but they haven't figured out how (touch, airborn, etc.)...

this one definitely sounds scary....

i'm worried about the big influx of tourists we're going to be getting in 2 weeks, when the pope visits (i live in israel)....
i heard that 50,000 pilgrims are coming with him...
i know thousands are coming from Europe but i wonder if any are coming from mexico....

Well we fly to Orlando in two weeks and yes I'm a bit worried about this but I'm thinking they, Virgin, would cancel the trip if they felt the need.

Have they canceled any trips to Mexico? The news says they are screening planes.

The tour operators will take it from the government, if its safe to travel then they wont cancel

On BBC Breakfast news they explained how even if 99.9% of travel in and out the UK were to be cancelled, it would still not stop the swine flu coming to the UK - it would just delay it. My guess, with that fact, I don't think they would advise it as I am sure they will weigh it up with the disaster it would cause to the business world.

However, wost case scenario, if we see Mexico type scenes in Florida, would we take the risk of taking our families on a non-essential trip into that (even though they are still saying trips to Mexico are fine!)

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage caused by the earthquake.
