Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

I am sorry but this is misinformation. It has not been "going around for a few weeks now" and I'm sorry the woman on the ventilator in SA might disagree with "no one has gotten seriously ill". And I, for one, appreciate JLTraveling's posts. They have been respectful and on point with regard to this topic.

according to the CDC it has been in the us since late march/early April

Are there human infections with swine flu in the U.S.?
In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near Guadalupe County, Texas. Other U.S. states have reported cases of swine flu infection in humans and cases have been reported internationally as well. An updated case count of confirmed swine flu infections in the United States is kept at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/investigation.htm CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

Injury ONE sustained in the Brook's family household :rotfl2:

I sooo can't believe I am posting this ~ I deserve a purple heart.

I had just finished cleaning the bathroom between posting on here (as the kids just got out of the tub) and ran in there to potty really fast ~ forgot the potty was still wet and slippery and I slipped and fell off the potty :lmao:

So add me to the numbers effected by the swine flu :rotfl2:

:rotfl: Thank you for the comedy relief!

We're leaving in less than 2 weeks. I am a little concerned, but we're still going as of now. No cases in my state, not even any reports of anyone being tested for it as of yet. Now, if an outbreak happens in my area or someone around us or we ourselves get sick, we'll stay put. Otherwise, we're still going and just taking normal precautions. I am wondering how wise it is to go to Chef Mickey's for breakfast though; that's our only buffet scheduled and I hate to cancel it, but I am debating it.

I read of people asking mousekeeping to not service their rooms, has anyone done this, is this even possible?

Also what precautions will you do as far as sanitizing your hotel room? Will you bring anything special?

We personally never get mousekeeping services while in WDW. We call them the first night and tell them we don't need service. Leave the Do Not Disturb sign on for good measure in case somehow the message gets lost. Only really had a problem at CSR; they kept coming in and servicing the room anyway for most of the vacation. That was years ago, though. They'll usually call every couple days and ask if we need anything or need service. It works well for us and them; one less room for them to worry about, and we just don't need service. We keep our room neat and clean on our own, so the only thing extra they have to deal with when we check out is a larger bag of trash to dispose of.

We always bring peroxide and Lysol with us. We peroxide the door handles, balcony handles, light switches, TV remote, clothes hook in the bathroom, etc. Let it sit for a bit and then wipe it off with a damp Bounty (everything but the light switches) before drying it off with a dry Bounty. We use Lysol in the toilet and the peroxide routine on the handle and seat. We do all this regardless of what kind of bug is or isn't going around.

umm, in the immortal words of Val Kilmer "there are a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as good as the real thing." just sayin'.
:rotfl::lmao::thumbsup2 People like this are always caught with their pants down when a crisis does come..then they're hitting you up for some of your supplies. I know, I've had it happen after hurricanes, blizzards etc.;)

I was beginning to wonder if

A) people thought I was serious!

B) I was off my meds!

C) I was typing in invisible ink again!

D) I was thinking of starting a "compound" somewhere in the Southwest! :scared1:

Seriously, my wife is an RN and she thinks there's a LOT of hype in the news media. I do, too. BUT, I'm a school teacher and so I guess she and I both have pretty stout immune systems because we basically work in human petri dishes!

I wouldn't let any of this ruin my trip.

And, if worse comes to worse, can you think of a better place to kick the bucket than Disney? Just put me somewhere on the Jungle Cruise ride but just not on the pole the rhino is attacking!

That is so true! :) Same people that thought I was NUTS for buying some bottled water and filling up my gas tank before Katrina (granted, we are 2 hours inland!). Those people probably wondered later who that girl was that was buying that water when they were wished they had some! ;) And I could have sold the gas in my car for a mint! ;)

Hey I've still got some Y2K water and about a bajillion Rain-Man noodles if anybody needs 'em! ;)

Same here~ People thought I was nuts for leaving 3 days before the thing hit!

I'm really glad that Hurricane Katrina came up on this thread, because it got me thinking about my own reactions to this situation, and my family's decision to cancel. Perhaps this can help others who are trying to decide what to do.

If you have ever gone through a hurricane season, you know about the cone of uncertainty. When a hurricane is forecast, there is a central track along which it is expected to travel. However, there is also a fairly large cone that includes all possible routes it "could" take. As the hurricane comes closer, the cone becomes smaller.

Unfortunately, if you live in certain areas, such as New Orleans, you don't have the luxury of time in deciding whether to evacuate. There are only three routes out of the city, all utterly clogged in the hours and days preceding landfall. When we evacuated for Hurricane Ivan in 2004, we literally sat in traffic on the Causeway Bridge across Lake Pontchartrain, a distance of just over 20 miles, for more than 10 hours. And we evacuated more than two days before the hurricane. That evacuation was considered a total success because no one was actually still on the bridge when the storm hit :scared1: Of course, that storm turned at the last moment and didn't end up hitting New Orleans head on. And that was the reason that many did not evacuate the next year for Katrina. That storm did turn, and did not hit us head on, yet we all know the devastation that it brought.

In any event, the possibility of swine flu at Disney is kind of like being in the cone of uncertainty for a hurricane. Will you get sick? Maybe. Maybe not. If you do get sick, will you recover easily? Maybe. Maybe not. Still being in the early phases of the US outbreaks, no one can really say much for sure.

So for us, we got hit with the recommendation to cancel literally two days before our trip. We had no time to watch and wait, and we decided that we didn't want to end up, metaphorically speaking, sitting on the Causeway Bridge when the storm came in. For those of you with trips planned next month, or even the end of this month, you have time to watch and wait... unless you are trying to avoid last-minute cancellation headaches. But I do think that just as with Katrina, allowing the talking heads to override your rational brain can be extremely dangerous.

Good luck to all, whatever you decide.

I swear, this whole thing is really p***ing me off! Not to be a broken record here, but this hysteria is assinine. The ignorance people are showing buying into the media hype over this makes me realise how the subprime mortgage crisis happened: clueless people will believe anything people tell them.
Sure, you make $54,000 a year, you can afford a $450,000 house! Swine flu is coming! Get your Purell and facemasks!

People...you literally have a better chance of getting in a car accident than you do of contracting swine flu. Plus, you don't live in Mexico. Even in our most lax states, our air quality, nutrition and medical care are like 300% better than the best parts of Mexico. This is NOT 1778....calm down! Unless you're living in a dirty house with 6 other families and eating crappy food, you have a 98% chance of staying healthy.

Ohh...I also don't care if I get flamed for my comments on Mexico. Remember the tainted tomatoes of 2008? Who gave them to us? Mexico! Salmonella spinach? Mexico! Thank you to all the greedy companies who fled to get cheap labor in Mexico and China...what did we get in addition to unemployment? Tainted food, tainted pet food, tainted baby formula, lead-filled toys. Everybody is so worried about being "politically correct" (the Dems) or offending voters (Dems and Republicans) or using hysteria to divide the masses (Republicans) that nobody is doing anything to protect Americans from this sub-par crap that is making our babies, pets and elderly sick. Look how long it took to name Mexico as the source of tainted tomatoes! Mattel actually APOLOGIZED to China when Mattel found lead in their toys. People, instead of being worried about if you're going to get sick at WDW or if the gay guy will win on Idol, lets start putting our religious and political differences aside and stand together against these corporations that are sacrificing OUR HEALTH to wring out more profit!:headache:

I thought your original post was hysterical ... :thumbsup2 ... my husband especially liked the idea of a meat helmet and is talking of creating one this weekend when we're having a large gathering in our backyard to grill meats of porky origin.

I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip! :goodvibes

What a GREAT idea! A pork cookout! :)

OMG, I love those noodles..they're the best thing. Lived on em' during college.

I know, right?!!! They were a requisite part of every care package my parents sent me! I was just laughing when I read your tag line. . . looks like you've come a long way since the Raman Noodle, huh? Lagoon Club Concierge at the Poly!!!! No noodles for you, my friend!

To be fair we planned it before news of the flu broke last weekend but now it's just kind of funny. Everyone is bringing a "home remedy" to ward off the virus. ;)

My contribution is a pitcher of sangria and a batch of kahlua coladas. :goodvibes
