Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Well for all of those who are not concerned and for those who think some are blowing it out of proportion ~

NYC stated they have more cases at this point then they can test for. There are 100's of people with it in NYC at this point... 3 schools are currently closed.
Once THAT many get out there is no stopping it now ~ its going to spread to all parts of the country. I few pockets of 4 or 5 here and there had a chance but with 100's in NYC?

CDC aint'e got a chance of stopping it now. Luckily its NOT as serious of an illness as it could be! It could be the plague :scared1:

Keep washing those hands ~ remind your kids to wash their hands ~ lysol the house once or twice a day and hopefully it will pass by your house ...

The CDC has stated from the onset that it was too late to stop it from spreading. Don't feed into the fear.

Oh, that totally stinks. I am so sorry!!

I would just stay put. The authorities will spread the word to all of those folks if it does turn out to be the swine flu.

Do you just feel horrible? Or are you sorta doubting it really is the new flu?

**wait...was this your honeymoon? :(

It was our honeymoon! I didn't feel too bad while down there, just achy and really tired. It wasn't till the last day that I started feeling really nasty. Right now the only reason I'm sitting up is its easier to breathe sitting up (I have asthma so the coughing is really bad). They've upped my inhalor usage and sent me home with a nebulizer to help with that.

also brands of eye, ear, and nose drops contain neomycin

My original response still stands. Neosporin does NOTHING to prevent viral infections. The poster I was responding to was recommending putting it in the nose as if it would help prevent you catching the flu virus.

Aw man! I am so sorry. I have asthma, too, and use the neb when I get really sick. Gosh...I hope your new husband is taking good care of you! Is he also sick?

I hope it is not the new flu! Keep us posted. I truly would like to know how you are doing.

:hug:I am so sorry. My dh has asthma also. I hope you feel better soon.

...except that the main antibacterial agent in Neosporin (neomycin) is toxic if it gets in your bloodstream, and applying to a mucous membrane (like inside your nose) where it can be more readily absorbed into your bloodstream is a bad idea.

Horrible advice IMO. Don't do it.

Try Flight Spray-I love it. I never get sick on the plane anymore. DH laughs at me but I go to the bathroom and use it.

my ENT recommended to me about applying bacitracin to my nares when working in the ER when I feel a sinus infection coming on. I have been doing this since 2005 and just apply a small amount. He says he uses it when he flies.. Makes sense. :confused3 I did it also when we flew last fall.. I also see it prescribed for people via their nares that have had swabs that test positive from their nose for MRSA as a carrier..

Sorry, your an MD? I was given this info my an infection control physician and I never said it could be used to prevent the flu. Please do not put words in my mouth. Neomycin is not toxic... you use it on open wounds so please enlighten me on how it is toxic and the whole bloodstream theory you have??? Also, one should not exactly shove it up into their nasal cavity...common sense.... it is to be used lightly just inside the nostrils and as I said used in conjunction with a saline. It is really all about keeping your nasal cavity moist...you could even use petroleum jelly ! I also recommend drinking lots of water.... drinking lots of water can also cause toxicity so be careful ;)

Yep, I 've seen MDs advise pts to do this..and I also have seen pts get this in their nares when they have MRSA.

I'd follow what my MD says..

Sorry, I don't believe this one bit. Neosporin is an antibacterial, while colds are caused by viruses - so Neosporin doesn't do anything whatsoever to help treat or prevent colds. Same thing goes with swine flu - it's a virus. If any doctor is giving this kind of poor advice to people, he/she needs to be reviewed and/or sanctioned.

Like I said in my previous post, do whatever you like. Most people will anyway, regardless of ignorance.
You are giving people faulty information..Either you are someone who graduated from Google Medical School or you are a doctor, just not a very good one. Your statement before that surgeons no longer use topical Neosporin or similar products on incisions? False, false, false. Most of the surgeons in my specialty do this..and I don't work in a podunk hospital.

I have also seen doctors prescribe this stuff for MRSA in the nares. I know, MRSA is not a virus. But, I think you're full of baloney if you're telling people they're going to be poisoned if they do it. Overdramatic much?

More updates about that FL case ~ I don't know about you but I smell a rat :rotfl2:

http://www.wftv.com/news/19311020/detail.html#-

The newest information from the health department says several samples from Central Florida cases have been sent to the CDC. However, the Florida Department of Health told Eyewitness News early Tuesday evening no samples from anywhere in Florida have been sent to the CDC.

Dr. Brady told Eyewitness News a Mexican tourist who had been to Disney came into one of the clinics Sunday night with the flu. On Monday, they swabbed the tourist and said they sent the culture to the CDC. Florida Hospital says it sent two more cultures from Orlando to the CDC on Tuesday, but the the Florida Department of Health denies having sent any samples to the CDC.

"At this time we have no confirmed cases here in Florida," Florida Surgeon General Ana M. Viamonte Ros said during theTuesday afternoon press conference.

Viamonte Ros said several samples are being sent to state labs where, if they get a positive test, they are then forwarded to the CDC for confirmation.

"Several tests are being conducted at this time, but there are no confirmed cases at this time" Viamonte Ros said.

I guess they don't have any confirmed cases seeing as though they never sent the samples to the CDC :rotfl2:

In NYC there is only one school closed. There are over 200 cases of swine flu from that school. A number of the people had been to Mexico. The school is closed all week and they have spent days disinfecting it.

Neosporin IS NOT used in hospitals so there =p
They use BACITRACIN :rotfl2:

Will it hurt ya if you snort it? nope .. will it do any good to prevent you from getting a VIRUS? NOPE
Will it prevent you from getting strep? it could....
alcohol will kill viruses BUT I would recommend speaking to your DR before snorting rubbing alcohol ;)

Then they ( the people out there trying to enforce the "martial law" would be breaking the law themselves....Citizen's arrest Citizen's arrest. And the government cannot "force" you to get the shot. And,,,if (and thats a big if) they did impose martial law,,,this country would go belly-up in no time...no one (businesses etc,,,) would be working...Government wouldnt want that now
Ok, you're confused. It would be the military enforcing martial law. I'd like to see you go out there and try to place one of the military under "citizen's arrest":lmao:. I'm not making this up, really. Look it up.

Now, I believe we're a long way from something this drastic..I was merely pointing out that it's a possibility.. A very very small one, but possible.

As far as the shot, I don't think they can force you to get it..But, first off, why on earth wouldn't you want it:confused3? Secondly, while they might not force you to get a shot, they most certainly can enforce a quarantine..Again, this is all info you can look up, should you want to educate yourself.

They just had it on the news that 3 NYC schools are now closed. Ps 177, the private school and one other cant remember but it was a ps and they showed parents picking up their kids half way through the day.

yup I sure am~ I asked my magical 8 ball and it told me that neosporin does NOT market to hospitals... their market is in retail
The medically marketed (meaning marketing to hospitals and dr. offices) version is called BACITRACIN :thumbsup2

Well, shoot, the freakin' name doesn't mean jack-squat. But, I'm sure you know this..what matters is the ingredients. They could call it Magical Nose Ointment and it would still do the same thing.:)
