Swimming in January?

HI, last time we visited WDW in January it was unseasonably cold and we only swam once... What do you think our chances are of using the pools / visiting Typhoon Lagoon when we are there - end Jan / beginning of Feb? Anyone got good experiences???

I'm planning on trying at least one pool and sitting sumerged up to my chin.

It surely can't be any colder than it is here now? The pools are supposedly heated to around 80 degrees and it will be 12-13C on average so that's a nice spring day in the UK (or a really good summer some years!).

Can't comment on the weather in January but 10th February 1996 as a kid I was fine in the pool and wearing shorts! However, two weeks later my dad was sent out to buy us hot water bottles and sweatshirts as it was freezing in the villa in the evenings. Hope you get good weather though, you'll just have to wear a wetsuit if it is cold, it wouldn't stop me from getting in the lazy river lol!

Seriously though, the last two Januarys there have been days where we swam, and spent time at the waterparks.

I was there in Jan 2008, and we visited both waterparks and used the hotel pool. They are all heated, just pick the warmer days and be prepared to be flexible due to the weather

It is pretty cold currently over there. Though pools may be heated it is the cold you feel when outside the water which isn't nice. You just have to play it how it comes.

done 1 december and 3 januarys and managed to visit waterparks and swim on all visits. Its the evenings where you can really feel the cold to be honest, but a packing nightmare none the less i think probably yes you will be able to, just watch the forecast and pick your day, some will be warmer than others.

We've just got back and although we didn't do any water parks due to time constraints, we swam a lot in the pool. Even on cold days the water is like a warm bath, it's when you get out that you start shivering!

We've been in early Feb and most days were warm enough for swimming, went to Blizzard Beach twice and swam in resort pool (where we got some odd looks from Americans who thought it was far too cold!)

Thanks for all these replies It's the getting out that is what I remember as being SO cold I think. I have a wet suit for DS, but I don't want him to catch cold when we get out... I'll take his thick bath robe with us I think, and make sure he's snuggled warm as soon as we get out. Of course - that doesn't help with the play areas at Typhoon Lagoon - but we'll just have to pick a lovely warm day to visit. DH says the 10 day forecast is good... And it'll def be warmer than here, where it is currently snowing !

I plan on buying a thick bath robe when I arrive for just that purpose. I love to swim iin the cold, but hate that getting out of a warm pool business! (I can buy a robe in US cheaper than I can over here, in case you were wondering!).

It depends where you're planning to swim. In January, I've found some pools lovely and warm - Saratoga and Polynesian and some pools freezing - Wilderness Lodge.

You need a mixture of clothing in January. I've seen me wear shorts and t-shirt some days and jeans and jacket the next. Some nights, I've needed to wear hat, coat and gloves and I'm not from a warm climate - north of England.
