I start swimming in gym tomarow. :guilty: I don't want to. Is there anyone at all that liked it? Maybe those of you who didn't like it can give me some excuses to get out of it? :earboy2: I hate swimming.. period.. but swimming at school at 7:20 in the morning?! :earseek: Ick.. Does every high school require it?

Ugh, you just made me thank my lucky stars that my HS didn't have a pool! I can't imagine doing that? Is it at least all girls at one time, then all boys? HS can be cruel enough!

Sorry you have to go through this....maybe you'll come down with the flu overnight?!

I grew up in NY and our highschool had an indoor swimming pool. Every year, 9-12 you had to do one quarter of swimming. It was Co-Ed too!

Anyway, we live in FL and NONE of the high schools around here have pools....go figure!

I had swimming early bird period so we started before 7. Now, 25 years later, I have fond memories of running across the street to the pool in our swimsuits in 50 degree weather. Then it wasn't so fun. Our pool was outdoors. BRRR! It was the only time I hated having PE first thing in the morning. We really envied the people who had it in the afternoon heat.

When I was in middle school we had swimming class, I liked it, but I do love to swim. In high school we didn't have a pool, of course middle and high were two different school districts.

Just the title of this thread made me shudder. I moved to a different state (MA) when I was in high school, and the school had a pool. Impressed the heck out of my father, but I was mortified. I can still picture those gung ho gym teachers shrieking at girls for refusing to change for gym.

You have my sympathies.

My daughter had it - she's a sophmore this year. Her school doesn't have a pool, so they had to walk to the city pool. Many girls tried to get out of it - in the end they all had to jump off the deep end. ;)

It'll soon pass. :)

My HS in NC had a pool and I hate to tell ya but that was the ONLY part of gym I ever liked.

Can't give ya any reasons to get out of swimming, but a knee brace worn for 8 weeks got me out of an entire semester of gym class. :smooth:

It's co-ed... We hafta do 15 laps! I'm not a strong swimmer in deep water.. :( Although, now I'm thankful that our pool is in the building!! I can't imagine running across the street! we have snow on the ground!

Awww I feel your pain. I used to fight the whole swimming unit with all my might. Just the thought of jumping into that pool that hundreds of other people have been in, yuck! Not to mention changing in front of everyone at such an akward insecure age then having wet nappy hair for the rest of the day. I'm sure that didn't help my germaphobia...the time I saw a used bandaid floating in the water. sorry I'm not helping, I'm probably making it worse. I say just get it over with, nothing else to do I suppose :(

Our high school does not have a pool - we have an ice rink so my kids have skating for P.E.

Ugh! This sounds like a teen girl's nightmare. How are you supposed to make your hair look good after that?? Ick. I'm glad I didn't have to do that. Dodgeball was horrid enough.

Now, being on swim team is different to me. That's a choice - and you can usually go right home afterwards.

AHH Id hate that. I dont even like being in a swimming suit around family and friends let alone a co-ed class! I wish you luck though im sure youll do fine.

EEEK what horrible memories! I love to swim, but I hated taking swim classes with the high school. Just do it and get it over with. You will be fine.

My kids have it and they hate it. In high school they only have 6 weeks of it and they don't really swim, basically they all stand around in the water so no ones hair gets wet. The middle school swims all year 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. They have to swim and my youngest hates it! we straighten her curly hair everyday so on swimming days she has to walk around school with "yucky" hair.

Well, if you have to do it, try to make the best of it and improve your swimming. I mean, I wouldn't want to do it either, but in the end, if you come away getting something from it, it will be worth it.

I think when I was your age, I tended to rebel against the very idea of things so much that any possible good that could have come from it was lost. Not saying that's what you are doing -- hope you know what I'm trying to say!

My DD is a 10th grade student and she just finished her swimming portion of gym. She hated it but got through it. At least they are able to bring their own swimsuits and towels. When I went to h.s. we had to wear the school bathing suits . . .ewwwwwwwwwww . . .sometimes I got ones that were really worn and showed a lot of :earseek: Anyhow, in DD h.s. they are required to do swimming in 10th and 12th grade.

Don't worry, you'll get through it, just as the rest of us did . . . :jumping4:

I feel your pain. I had PE swimming when I was in the High School and I hated every minute of it. First I was an overweight child, second it was co-ed, third you had to get in the pool right after getting ready for school in the morning only to have to get ready again after the pool. And what a pain it was if you ran out of time and it was winter and you had to walk to your next class outside! I could go on and on....ugh, what a nightmare. So sorry for you....maybe your parents can write a note so you can get excused??

Both my kids hated to swim in school. They like pools/beach but not in school. They would absolutely anything to miss swim class. I could always tell on their report cards when I looked at their PE grades what quarters were swimming!

However, tragically a 11 year old boy drowned during swim class just about 2 years ago about this time. The whole incident obviously shocked our community and school. After many, many investigations, etc., the pool has still not been reopened. We honestly don't think they will ever make swimming "mandatory" as part of the cirriculum. I cannot imagine any parent feeling at ease if they do start swimming again.
