You ask for a glass of hot water and a glass of tea and you mix it all yourself with your own sugary concoction. My dh did this and I thought he was going to drive that poor girl nuts. But he got what he wanted, just took us conducting chemistry at our table to get it right.
Yep - ask for a tall glass of ice and hot tea. Let the tea overbrew with lots of sugar in it (overbrew because you'll be duluting it over the ice) and stir well. Pour hot well steeped very sugary tea over ice. It won't be quite "the same" but it won't be unsweetened tea or have the grit of tea sweetened at the table. You may wish to practice at home.
The best sweet teas, IMO (and I'm a Northerner) are made with simple syrup and not by adding the sugar to the hot tea water. Steep your tea seperately from making your sugar. Lemonade is better this way as well. Bartenders should have simple syrup, but will charge you for the drink.
My daughter says that the tea at McDonalds is made with 5 lbs of sugar to 5 gallons of water. She works there and has to make it sometimes. They don't have iced coffee yet they should have is soon.
She loves sweet tea and was shocked when we went on our cruise and they didn't have it.
