Hi. I'm trying to think of something special to get my dd for her upcoming 16th birthday. She is not a girly-girl at all. I was thinking of a special piece of jewelry but don't know what. The only thing she wears right now is a Claddagh ring that I got her for Christmas. Any ideas?? Could I be more vague? lol!

I'm 17, and when I had my sweet 16, my parents had bought me a point-and-shoot digital camera. Maybe something like that would work if she's creative. You could also get her an mp3 player, a certain movie she's wanted, a spa day treatment. Just a few ideas. :P

If all she wears is a ring you got her, would she really want another piece of jewelry? I would be disinclined to gift jewelry if the person receiving the gift doesn't really wear jewelry.

Otherwise, I'd suggest a nice pendant with her birthstone.

If she collects anything, you could get her something to add to her collection. My mother and my grandparents bought me plenty of 'special' things over the years, but the important stuffed animals that they got me are the ones that I still have that remain very special to me.

If there's anything she's nearly *always* been interested in and will likely continue that interest into adulthood - invest in that.

Speaking as someone who has several 'special' yellow gold jewelry pieces that sit in a box, try to think of what *she* would feel is special, not you. :)

(I'm pale and yellow gold makes me look ill, but my grandmother and a few other relatives would not buy me white gold because they thought it looked 'cheap' and didn't want people to think it was silver.)

Maybe instead of a material gift, you could go on an outing or trip together. For my daughter's 16th, the two of us went to Nashville for 4 days (she's a huge country music fan) and it was the best gift she could have gotten - her pictures and memories from that trip will last a lifetime!! We had the best time and she still talks about it all the time.:thumbsup2

I'm not really a girly-girl and was not in to the whole Sweet 16 party so, for my 16th, my mother took me to see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and then out to dinner. It was a great, memorable birthday.

Maybe you can do something like with her?

For my 16th birthday, my Mom took me up to Chicago on the train for a couple days of shopping and fun. It was way better than getting jewelry (I don't wear a ton of jewelry) or something else because I will remember that trip for many years to come. Chicago has always been one of my favorite places to go. :thumbsup2

Even though she isn't a girly girl..... is she still a Disney princess? How about the Disney traveling broadway, a ticket for that? Or maybe Cirque de Soleil (traveling) trip? Let me know what you do!

We actually head into the city for her birthday every year and spend the weekend or at least the night. Maybe I could rent a suite and have her bring2 friends and go see a show. That could be a lot of fun and be memorable, right? She's not really 'into' anything but I think maybe she would like 'Rock of Ages'. Hmmm, food for thought. I have to see what my budget will allow. Thanks for the ideas...keep them coming!

We have a 16th birthday tradition in my family that goes back a few generations. The birthday girl gets a strand of pearls...real ones. My sister and I both wore our 16th birthday pearls on our wedding days. Made it extra special. She may not be into pearls now but one day she will be. And a pearl necklace is a perfect heirloom to pass down to future generations.

I love this idea. My dad died in Nov when I was 21 and on Christmas morning that year my mom gave me pearls that they had picked out for me the weekend before he died:sad1: I wore them for my wedding. Maybe i should start a tradition for my girls.

My daughter doesn't wear much jewelery either. She did not request anything special for her 16th birthday and we were not sure what to get her. We had our trip planned to Aruba, meeting up with family there. DH wanted to get her a nice piece of jewelery that she could always have. After much consideration, we saw a necklace that had 2 hearts with diamonds. In her birthday card we wrote that even though she was now 16 years old, in our hearts she would always be our little princess. Of course, the meaning in the hearts, was DH and I.:cutie: Surprisingly, she wears that necklace quite often and has received great compliments from her friends.:cutie:

Our family tradition is that girls get a real pearl necklace and earrings for their 16th birthday.

How about a "daughter's necklace". One with the birthstones of mom, dad and daughter? Kinda like a daughters ring people used to buy.

My DH got me one last year for Christmas. It's a drop style and has his, our daughter's, then my birthstones.

Or you could just get her a car with a big bow on it. :rolleyes1

Lol, don't think she hasn't hinted at a car but since you can't drive until you're 17 in NY, she's out of luck:lmao:

I like the idea of a necklace like that.
