Sweeney Todd

Well, I can agree with your complaints about Sweeney Todd but it's just plain inaccurate to say he's playing the same character in those four movies.

I didn't realize opinions can be inaccurate :confused3 I gave MY OPINION that's all. YMMV just like with everything else that involves one's impression of a movie. Please don't tell me my opinion is inaccurate when it's an opinion- not a fact. Facts are accurate. not opinions. I never said it was the exact same character. Obviously different countries, eras, plotlines, etc- it's never going to be the same character.

Geesh - why are people getting so worked up because of a shared impression. Did you all miss where I said I liked the damn movie and his performance?

I see.... I remember ages ago when my friends in Middle School used to get all raged up at me when I said how much I hated New Kids on The Block. But it's good to know that Johnny loves us since I do enjoy him so. Perhaps someday you will grace us with the secret knowledge you posess of Johnnyy Depp. Until then it's Capt. Jack and Edward Scissorhands for me.

Have a nice day kiddo!

I wonder if the makeup artist for From Hell, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd were the same person?

That's b/c both Edward Scissorhands and Sweeny Todd are Tim Burton movies. Notice that Sweeny Todd and Edward Scissorhands also look similar to the animated Victor (voiced by Depp) from The Corpse Bride which is yet another Burton film. The movie took place in England ... thus the Capt. Jack accent. No surprise there, eh?

Wow, I just don't see how people can say the character in Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, and Sweeney are the same character. Unless you are talking about wild hair and some crazy makeup? They are NOTHING like each other.

(Bolding in Jobhunters post mine)
Note my use of the words look similar in my post. I didn't say they were the same character ... they're similar in looks only!!!! As you stated, it's the wild hair, ghostly white skin and the clothing that are similar in all characters I mentioned (Sweeny Todd, Victor and Edward Scissorhands). I never said he olayed the characters in the same fashion. I def. think that they're all different!!!!

Wow. I loved Sweeny Todd. In fact, I give it the very slight edge over Hairspray for favorite movie of the year. I thought Depp was brilliant, as was Rickman, and Bonham Carter was also terrific, despite her less than powerful singing voice. Actually none of them are really great singers, but thought they were all good enough singers that their acting carried them through, if that makes sense.

On top of that, I thought it was an amazing looking film. The costumes and sets-- all top notch. And Sondheim's music sounds fabulous with a full-sized movie orchestra playing it. I give this one two bloody thumbs up!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Did you all miss where I said I liked the damn movie and his performance?

You said he phoned in his performance. Which is about the most insulting thing one can say about an actor, especially one of Johnny Depp's caliber.

I've been an admirer of Johnny's work for 15+ years, have seen all the characters he has played, all of his performances. I didn't think he could awe me any more than he already has over the years...but I sat there in Sweeney Todd with my jaw hanging on the floor. As did everyone else in the place. And while this is not my favorite movie of Burton's, I can honestly say this performance of Johnny's is the finest he has ever put forth. He poured his entire heart and soul into this role.

Phoned it in? I think not.

Of course, that's just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own, which is why I'm holding back from saying what I really would like to say on this thread. :rolleyes1

Oh and for the record, Johnny's farts do NOT smell like roses, and he is far from some "untouchable God" or whatever it was someone said about him. :sad2:

Also for the record, I don't take kindly to anyone calling my friend a troll.

I'm out.

Who cares where he did the voiceover work from!?!? What difference does it make? If it sounds good what difference does it make? I could care less if he did it in a studio or phoned it in while he was taking a dump! If it's quality work and done in a professional manner, what diff. does it make WHERE he does his work from? I know lots of people who work from places other than their office. If they get the work done and are professional, what's the big deal? Heck, if I could do my job in a professional manner from the comfort of my home, I'd be doing it!!!!!!

Phoned it in? I think not.
Oh, so you are an insider? Were you there when he was in studio? How do you know what he does w/his personal life and where he did his performance? Did you follow him? :sad2:

Ok look. I like Johnny Depp. I have almost all of his movies on dvd, even some obscure ones. I was a fan before he became an untouchable person of godlike proportions on the DIS.

I don't understand the offense people seem to be taking with comments that some characters are similar. I found the nuances and mannerisms to be similar and as someone who is a big fan of the show, was expecting something different. I am not saying he did a bad job. Just the opposite. I am saying that I was hoping he would go into a completely new and inventive direction. I thought he was wonderful in the role and deserving of his nominations. I took great care to even mention that the direction he chose was most likely because it was Tim Burton's vision. This is my opinion and that is all. Others don't see the comparison- that's fine, but for crissakes don't tell me my opinion is incorrect because it's just that - my opinion.
Nope, I have no problem with your opinions at all. This is America.....we can have different opinions. And to be honest, I think you have stated yours quite well, without being insulting to those who may hold differing opinions. I have a different opinion than you do. Fine. Doesn't make me right and your wrong, or vice versa.
Man, nobody said that Johnny Depp can't act his way out of a wet paper bag here. Think we can all agree that he is a wonderfully gifted actor. We can all have our own opinions as to what his best pieces of work are without getting in a twist here.

I know that when I saw the movie 'Lost in Translation' I couldn't figure out what I had missed. Everyone was raving about it...it was the best thing since, oh I don't know, but you know what I mean. Different strokes for different folks. I know that I did leave 'Sweeny Todd' telling my dd that I like to see a movie and feel entertained. I hate to have to sit and think about it. I don't want a moral or to be taught something. Yikes, that makes me sound kinda shallow. I'm not, really. Did I leave 'Sweeny Todd' feeling that way? No, not really. But it sure as heck didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy either. But, still at terrific movie.

Cool, Vanessa Paradis posts on the Dis.:thumbsup2 ;)

Yep, that's right ... I'm her. That's not really me in my sig. And, that isn't my kid, either. It's just how I fool the general public!!!! Shhhhhhhh .... don't tell anyone else!!!!

Without reading all four pages of posts...sorry...its my A.D.D....my dd13 wants to see the movie but wants to know how gory it is? A lot of blood??

Thanks

Lots and lots of blood .... spurting, gushing, spraying, dripping, etc. Once you get past the first throat slashing scene, you can stomach the rest (at least in my case). The blood is v. red in comparison to the darkness of how the movie was shot. The color of the blood really pops against all the black and grey.

I really enjoyed this movie. I particularly loved the part when Anthony and Sweeney are singing "Johanna". It was a heartbreaking scene, especially the line "If only angels could prevail, we'd be the way we were". I bought the cd as a Christmas present to myself and listen to it in my car.

I always thought of Edward Scissorhands as a totally innocent character and Sweeney was definitely not innocent.

I'm usually squeamish in gory movies, but this one didn't gross me out that much.

I want to see it too, but I'm afraid it will make me sick, my 15 yr old DD on the other hand has a cast iron stomach. ;)

I didn't think the movie was gory. However, if the sight of blood at all upsets you , you may want to opt out...or at least wait until DVD since all that blood on a large screen might be a bit too much.

Also, the term "phone it in" refers to somebody going through the motions but not being really into it. It doesn't mean he voiced over the singing on the phone....and I cannot believe I just had to explain that...

Ahh, it's always good to see the differing opinions. I think part of why I may have felt the film fell short for me was that I had mega high hopes for it. There was so much buzz and build up surrounding it that I was expecting the greatest film of all time. I really HATE going into a movie expecting that because I am ALWAYS let down. But I get so jazzed about seeing a movie and can't help but read every review and watch every preview. I am my own worst enemy.

FWIW, Johnny's singing was a high point. Not the songs, but rather watching him sing since I had heard how uncomfortable he was with the idea of singing. He really didn't show any sign of holding back or feeling uncomfortable. That I enjoyed...THAT'S acting!

Sorry that you had to explain that. I guess I must be really stupid. I'm not a theatre major and have never heard the term before. Thanks for enlightening stupid me.

Chill out, Daxx. You'll notice I did not quote you or ANYONE in my post. I made a paraphrasing statement of other posts, on other threads as well, where people have said that they think he keeps playing the "same character."

I didn't quote you so please make your point elsewhere and quote someone who was actually referring to you to get you so lit up! :confused3

First, my response wasn't totally written toward you. I wasn't even responding to you. That being said, What makes you think an opinion can't be inaccurate? LOL that's the funniest thing I've seen all day. I'm not worked up at all. Maybe you are since you jump to conclusions. I'm just saying that it's quite obvious the characters aren't the same. I mean, in Sleepy Hollow, Depp plays a somewhat nervous, skeptical person. In Sweeney Todd he's a dang singing butcher. LOL. There might be some similarities in From Hell and Sleepy Hollow etc but nothing that I would consider them being similar characters.

And my opinion is that I think the characters are not similar. And for the record, I don't like Sweeney Todd that much nor do I like From Hell that much either. So don't dismiss m comments because you think I'm a huge Deppaholic like those others.

He's an excellent actor obviously but I like about half his work. However, it's wrong to say he's playing the same characters (and somebody did say that) or that he's going through the motions. I like to notice the little nuances in certain roles. Besides the accents, I don't see a connection between characters.

Sorry that I offended you. That wasn't my intention. I just quoted you to show that I was in agreement w/the looks portion as you had stated and not about the "playing the same character". My reason for quoting you was to back up what I said about character description. I didn't mean the "I didn't say" to be accusatory to you. I'm sorry you took it that way and apologize.
