One week...If you're needing to "top off" your account, or just saving towards future flights...This works pretty good for me.

Get an extra 40% points when you buy or gift points until July 31.

i.e. Buy 3000 points, get 1200 free.

I got this email this morning also. Of course I had to buy points LAST week or lose what I had. Thanks a lot SW :headache:

I received the same email this morning. If I "buy" points with my e rewards will I also get 40% more?

just curious why would you loose rapid reward points? I thought that they don't expire.

From the SW website:

Upon enrollment, Members' accounts are active for 24 months. Members' accounts will remain active as long as the Member has qualifying activity at least once every 24 months. The Member's account expiration date will be extended 24 months from the date of the last qualifying activity. Points earned from flights booked through Southwest and points earned from Rapid Rewards Partners count as qualifying activity. If a Member fails to have qualifying activity in 24 months, the Member's account will become inactive and all points, credits, and Promotional Awards will be forfeited. Southwest Airlines reserves the right to cancel the membership of any inactive Member.

Thanks DebbieB for the explanation.

I didn't fly SW at all last year and there was no way I was going to lose all the points that I had....with the minimum point purchase I now have enough for a RT flight. Actually, the cost was $55 so I'm going to consider that the cost of my RT flight....worth the money IMO.

As to the e-rewards question it would be a nice bonus if you could also convert to RR and get the 40% bonus but I seriously doubt it. The deal is for OOP purchases.

My understanding is that "Qualifying activity" is also attained when you make a purchase from a SWA-RR partner...(going through the Rapid Rewards portal of course.) We've flown every year since they changed to these newer rules, so you might wanna check with the good folks at 1-800-IFLYSWA

Maybe I just don't understand, but if I buy 5500 points and get a bonus 2200 points which would be roughly what I would need for a one way ticket, it would cost $151. But, if I pay cash for that ticket, it is typically around $130. Is the premium due to the flexibility of booking with points vs cash?

Sorry...just saw your posting Grumpy.

That's one big advantage to booking using the RR points-the flexibility for changing or cancelling flights. The points immediately credit back into your Rapid Rewards balance. Generally, I use them to top off or just add to the "bank" I have. We are pretty aggressive with the shopping aspect of the Rapid Rewards, and take advantage of the SWA Partners when it makes sense for us.
This 40% bonus promo is one of the best "deals" for quickly attaining points at a decent savings.
