SWA Credit--Can I do this?

I have an SWA credit that expires this Friday. I'm planning to pay the $50 to extend it 6 months so I can use the balance. But, since their schedule opened up yesterday, and I was worried about losing our flight times and the $94/pp price, I went ahead and booked it anyway without using the credit.

So, can I extend the credit next week, get the voucher, and then cancel & rebook my flights (assuming they stay the same price) using the voucher? Will the balance of the new credit expire in 6 months (i.e., the same as the voucher) or in 12 months?
