So I qualified last year for the companion pass using the 50K bonuses on 2 credit cards (plus & premium) plus $10K in charges. ($2K each required to get the 50K bonus)

With 1 out of state college student & another next year, we had visions that DH would apply for cards now to attain companion pass status as soon as possible after the first of the year (not charging until after the first of the year).

WELL--apparently I have been the only one applying for credit cards over the years & then I get him an authorized user card!!!!

He was turned down for the card because he doesn't have enough credit cards open!! (his name was put on a lease in June 2014...) SERIOUSLY? His credit score is about 800.

OK--time to go get some credit for this man! SHEESH!

LOL, that's funny.

How do you plan to use your Companion Pass? Wouldn't you just make your DH your companion? The companion has to fly with the CP holder, i.e. it's not like you can give a CP to one of your children and have them fly alone, you have to fly with them. If you're flying to go visit one of your kids, wouldn't your DH fly with you?

ETA: When does your CP expire? Would your CP overlap with his (if or when he gets one)? I believe you're allowed to change your assigned companion up to 3 times before it expires.

I had the same problem with my wife.

We went down to the bank and deposit $1000 into a 1 year CD. We then used that CD as collateral for a 1 year personal loan.

After that was completed, my wife had no trouble getting credit.

davper--its crazy, we have a loan at our credit union, too!

We had CP this year; worked great for DH & I to visit DS at college, take DS on college & dance team visits, & when DH & I travel. My pass expires at the end of this month.

We would use it to take DD to college & do family weekend visits at colleges as well as when DH & I travel. You can change your travel companion up to 3x/year (so u could possibly have 4 different companions/year)

You say 'we' meaning it is in both of your names? The bank may have just used your credit and has you as the primary borrower. Get one in just his name.

Actually, we each have a loan that comes out of our own checks (darn college expenses!)
Will send him to Scheels this week!!

could be no relations with the bank. Always having a relationship with the bank of the credit card goes a long way, but apply for credit card works too... :P

Call them. I have read on here before about folks getting turned down and they called and got approved.

That is funny, and something I have thought about. Since I handle most of the finances I have most of the credit cards in my name also. As a SAHM who hasn't worked for 25 years, I was happy to be able to get those CCs in my name, but made a conscious effort over the past few years to get a couple for DH. We have no loans as our mortgage is paid off. He now has a SW card in his name and an American airlines one.
