My husband did a flight from Orlando to Chicago this past Monday, and he was on American for the first time in quite a while. We've switched almost entirely to SW, but he had purchased the American tickets quite some time ago so he was stuck. Granted, SW is a cattle call, but he was totally amazed at the amount of chaos on American! People all had seat assignments, but seems that they were all "bad" assignments, with families split up willy nilly. Neither he nor I has been on a SW flight yet where we've seen anyone asked to move, but on that American flight, he said they were practically begging. And it wasn't just one family, it was for several. So yes, the A, B, C thing is a pain and it can be a cr*pshoot for your group to be together on SW, but you may not be much better off even if your seats are assigned.
(Wow, I can't believe it...I'm actually speaking up for SW!)
