I want to rebook my Dec. 28th flight, and I know I have one year from when I booked it (July 2014). But that flight used travel funds left from a previous change, so I don't know how that will be handled. The change I want to make will be before July 2014. Does anyone know how this will work? Thanks.

What is the expiration date on the travel funds voucher? It should say on the voucher.

Is your Dec 28 flight the outbound or return flight?

You should be fine as long as the original purchase date is after Dec 28, 2013.

Let me see if I understand this...

You booked a flight for December 28, 2014. You paid for it in July 2014 at least partially using "travel funds left from a previous change" (but you didn't say when that other flight was originally purchased).

Now you want to cancel the December 28, 2014 flight and use the funds to pay for a flight "before July 2014" (I assume you mean before July 2015).

The answer is that booking the ticket in July 2014 did not reset the expiration date of the older travel funds. Those travel funds will expire when they were originally set to expire. Any additional money you spent in July 2014 will not expire until July 2015.

The entire amount will expire the date of the original travel funds. Do you have a copy of the confirmation from when you booked? It will show the expiration date of your ticket.

Any additional money you spent in July 2014 will not expire until July 2015.
Unfortunately that is not true. Any new money applied to the cost of the ticket will inherit the expiration date of the oldest funds used. It's one of the "gotchas" when using travel funds to pay for part of a ticket plus new money to pay for the rest of the fare.

I'm not sure the date of the "original travel funds" used, but it was a small portion of the total flight cost anyway, so if I lose those, it would not be too bad. If I went with the July 2015 date being the latest date I could book, do I get any sort of extension (with a charge)? I thought I read that somewhere. And, also, I have to travel by the July date, right? Not book by the July date? I'd really like to book a flight for early November 2015. I hope I'm being clear!!!

The whole amount of the ticket takes on the original date when you use travel funds. You may want to call Southwest to verify the dates. You can pay $100 per ticket to extend the dates once past expiration.

I did not know that! Thanks for the heads up.

You can check it on the website
PLAN A TRIP
MANAGE RESERVATION
Look for VIEW TRAVEL FUNDS
Put in your confirmation number and a name of the passenger
It will come up with the ticketless travel funds and their expiration.

Possibly Important to note and to be hones, I'm not sure this is true, but - You can only use - I think it's 4 - methods of payment to pay for an itinerary
If you had an itinerary that involved four people, that will show as four separate funds (one for each person)
If you rebook all four people, and find that you have to make a cash payment also, you will not be able to use all four peoples funds. (because then you would not have an "extra" payment method to use the balance.
You can get around this by booking each individual separately or maybe as couples. Hope this makes sense.
