Quick question: I assume if I book a future flight for myself and a companion on my points and the price of the flight(s) goes down, I can cancel and rebook and the extra points will go back into my account. Is this correct? And if I cancel outright, the points for both people go back into my account, correct?

You are correct, but you don't have to cancel. You can "change" the flight to the same one at the lower price and still have the points put back into your account.
