Well never mind... We planned on driving for the first time but I checked SW last week and found r/t nonstop tix for the four of that cost $1117. With gas around $2.75 plus tolls and the need for two extra nights in a hotel because of the drive (plus the kids would have missed the first day back to school) we couldn't pass it up.
I found a mid size car on orbitz for ten days for $210... maybe I can do better with priceline when we get closer but still pretty happy. Would have still been cheaper yes to drive but now we wont buy a luggage carrier for the van and we'll skip fixing the AC which was going to cost a lot.
