I have recently discovered I like sushi. I'm not too adventurous. Tuna and salmon are the only things I'll try raw. I won't try eel and mackerel. What do you eat when you go to a sushi bar. Dh and I went to our first one tonight. I found it very intimidating. The server didn't really speak english so she couldn't offer much advice other then to say this is good. I also don't know how to use chopsticks and looked foolish. They brought us a hot wet cloth. I sure hope it was to wash our hands because that is what we did. When we went it was slow but it filled up after we had ordered. I noticed that some people sat at the bar, others at tables. Most of the couples around us ordered samplers from the bar and told the server their likes and dislikes. I wish we had felt comfortable doing this. I would have liked to try more different dishes. Please give me some pointers for the next time.

I've tried just about every type of sushi there is and I must say that eel and mackeral are two of my favs-you must try them!

I eat octopus and squid but it's a bit rubbery but not bad tasting.

White tuna and fatty tuna are amazing-like butter!

Salmon is my ultimate favorite.

The only one I will NEVER eat again is Natto sushi which is not a fish but a fermented soybean that is sticky, stinky and just plain nasty!

Welcome to your new addiction!

Try the house specialty at whichever sushi restaurant you go to. They know what's good and what isn't. But always be careful about your sushi bar. Find a good one that you can trust the quality of the fish. The best places won't even let you order--they just choose for you! :rotfl:

Personally, I'm a tuna addict. When I'm eating raw, it's tuna, for the most part. I do enjoy flounder, and yellowtail is OK. I am not a huge fan of Scallop or sea urchin. But it's all about personal taste. Try it all and find your favs!

This I guess is why most people were just giving some likes and dislikes and then getting a plate that the server explained to them. The bar had a chalk menu. We ordered off the menu and two items were house specialties and one was a regular basic bar item. There were some basic bar items in the menu but most of the stuff was on a chalk board.

I'm with you. I only eat the raw tuna and salmon. Cooked, I sometimes have the imitation crabmeat or shrimp or lobster salad. I'm not into avocado. I have it rolled with cucumber. Not too exciting.

I've tried pretty much every sushi I can get my hand on, but I'm not a fan of eel, myself. Sometimes, I just go to a sushi place, tell them what I'm in the mood for, and let them bring something out. If I'm in a roll mood, I'll tell the server I want something spicy and cruncy let say, and they'll choose something for me.

But I only go to sushi bars that I trust. I've gotten sick from bad sushi before, so I make sure I know the place I'm going to.

Have you tried the California Roll? It is basically veggie sushi and yummy.

California roll and shrimp tempura roll are how I began this addiction. Today I had something called a Godzilla Roll and a Hawaiian roll. These were wonderful.

Yes, never make sushi yourself unless you get sushi grade fish. It's supposed to be fresher, since they know it won't be cooked.

The only thing I would eat is shrimp. I only go because my BF likes to go. He is more adventurous then me. He likes eel, octopus, salmon. He tried a few California rolls and I tried 1 or 2 pieces with him. I have to say I did not like them. I am not a fan of seaweed or avocado.

My fiances loooves sushi. It makes me sick. We do go to a local sushi bar a lot though, and I usually just get some soup and fried rice. Anyway, here are some of his favorites:

Smoked salmon roll: smoked salmon, onion, scallion
Spicy salmon roll
Spicy tuna roll
Crunch roll: cream cheese, crab, scallion, smelt fish roe, pieces of tempura batter
New York roll: eel, avocado, cream cheese w/yellowtail and avocado on top
Toro roll - fatty tuna

I think about the only thing he won't eat is uni, which is sea urchin.

I love sushi. I usually get the smoked salmon, tuna, and such. But the spicy tuna, and the soft shell crab are also yummy. :thumbsup2

Luz me some sushi:love: the unagi is smoked eel and eveni if it sounds gross
I'd encourage you to try it. It is 100% yum:)

I was addicted to sushi a while back. I had to be firm with myself because my budget couldn't support sushi except as an extravagance. I haven't gone for quite a while but would love to go again.

I'm a fan of the all-you-can-eat restaurant. They bring the sushi straight to your table and it is so fresh! I love California rolls. A dynamite roll is tempura prawn in the sushi. Delicious. Deep-fried yams and other veggies are delicious.

What do I have to order to just try one piece of something. That's the only way I'd try something daring like eel. I love salmon and will have to try something with smoked salmon. Now I think I understand rolls come all rolled up. But almost anything else is just the item on rice?

Most places serve sushi four different ways:

Maki - the rolls
Nigiri - a piece of fish on top of a small pad of rice
Tamaki - this is sometimes called a hand roll, it's a cone of seaweed stuffed with rice, fish and veggies.. it's basically maki in a cone shape
Sashimi - just a sliced piece of fish.. no rice or veggies

You should try and sit at the sushi bar next time you go and talk to the guys who make the sushi. At most of the places my fiance drags me to () they're all really nice and will answer any questions you have and make suggestions for you based on what you like or are willing to try.

I just have to say, I applaud your adventurous nature! New foods are so fun. Ask the waiter next time if they make sweet potato rolls or shrimp tempura rolls ... both have a nice sweet fried crispness that is just magical with soy sauce, and they're a yummy counterpoint to tuna or salmon rolls. Also, typically the ginger salad dressing that Japanese restaurants serve on their salads is AMAZING.

I love that dressing!

Anyone have a recipe, or know of a store bought bottle version?

White tuna is my favorite. It IS like buttah! Another interesting one to try is Tamago, it's egg (it's cooked) and they do something to it to make it slightly sweet.
At our favorite place they have these paper menus and they give you a pencil and you can check off what you want.
Oh and has anyone ever ordered that Love Boat? I have seen it at a couple of different Japanese restaurants. A HUGE wooden boat/platter covered in sushi, for groups of people.
