Sushi

My husband and I and my DD all love sushi. My favorite is Yellow Tail, it is similar to salmon because they both have a mild flavor. I will eat most types of sushi, my husband loves the salmon roe, which is the raw salmon eggs. I prefer sashimi over sushi, which means that it is just the fish, it is not served on rice. Good luck, it is expensive, but is our favorite treat! Sometimes the less fancy restaurants are better and less expensive, but know where you are buying from.

When I eat rolls, I hardly order the "standard" like California, Boston, etc. I love the special rolls, like Crazy Roll, Romance Roll, Dragon Roll. My favorite place runs a 3 for 2 special. You order 3 special rolls, but only pay for 2.

I like the Dragon roll myself. Spicy Tuna is actually pretty good as well.

Thanks so much for the tips.
Most places serve sushi four different ways:

Maki - the rolls
Nigiri - a piece of fish on top of a small pad of rice
Tamaki - this is sometimes called a hand roll, it's a cone of seaweed stuffed with rice, fish and veggies.. it's basically maki in a cone shape
Sashimi - just a sliced piece of fish.. no rice or veggies
This is something I was confused about. How much sushi does each person usually order. We had ordered some soup, some dumplings and a roll each. The server kept saying, and.. and... like we should be getting something else. I loved the lemongrass hot and sour soup. I saw a couple get the love boat.

We went to Japan this summer and had a lot of sushi!

Ask for tails in the air at your local sushi bar and they will think you know a lot about sushi :thumbsup2 It is shrimp tempura wrapped in a sushi roll. Also, Jalepino roll is really good and I don't like hot things, it's tolerable

I don't eat anything raw but my DH and Son do so they loved allt he sushi in Japan, octopus, cows toungue, you name it they ate it.

I ate a lot of udon and ramen while in Japan, the thing is it's piping hot when your eating it and it's in a broth like a soup. We were sitting at the table with a lot of people and my nose was running the whole time, I had to keep getting up and going into the restroom to wipe my nose it's not allowed at the table. Going into the restroom is quite a process you have to change into "restroom" booties then change back into your shoes by the time you get back to the table they replinish your hot broth with more hot broth and the nose starts all over again. We had a lot of laughs.

Have fun finding different Japanese foods you like, it is quite an experience!

He probably thought it was like ordering one dumpling instead of getting a few.

This thread made me crave salmon rolls last night. I went out and bought the prepackaged ones ant my supermarket deli. I see them making it every day so I know they are fresh - although they aren't the same as having one made on the spot. Sushi, if sitting too long dries out. The prepackaged sushi usually has between 6, 8 or 12 rolls.

mmmm sushi is soooo goood! i eat it once a week!

my faves are philidelphia rolls (salmon, cream cheese, cucumber)
volcano rolls (lobster, avacado, fish and some other stuff deep fried and then a spicey sauce drizzled on top)
dynamite rolls (tempura shrimp, lettuce, mayo, crab and avacado with spicey sauce)
and red dragon rolls (same as dynamite rolls but no spicey sauce and the roll is covered with salmon)

and i love thier fried honey banana dessert and green tea ice cream.
yummmmmy!

oh and i <3 shrimp dumplings too.

im so craving some sushi right now!! thanks op!!

I want y'all to know that I picked up sushi at my local sushi place on the way home this afternoon. A yummy dinner is waiting is waiting for me now!

I actually love the Eel! It took me several months to get up the nerve to try it, but it is very tasty. The eel itself actually has no real taste. The eel sauce is what it is all about! Very yummy. I only treied it around other eel lovers who would let me try just one piece.

We did the same thing with our 14 yr old nephew and now our only issue is that he hogs all our eel!:lmao:

I am currently waiting for sushi delivery to arrive. I usually like the rools with Salmon, Tuna, Tempuras, and Eel. I do not like the spicy mayo at all. I am only so-so about the dynamite (which my DH loves). I like trying the special creations which each restaurant will put together. It is just fun to try things! Even if I end up not liking it DH is a human vacuum cleaner.

The conch and mackeral I also don't like much.

Yes, I have to stop reading this thread or I have have to make another sushi run tonight. :)

Tiggeroo if you are still in Jersey how far are you from Plymouth Meeting PA?

There is a great place, BlueFin, on Germantown Pike
http://www.sushibluefin.com/

if you can get in there during the week some time, talk to Yong at the bar. He'll help you out.

Or find a place in your area that will do Omakase (Oh-mah-kah-say, or chef's choice). Doing this with a good sushi chef will help you to learn what you like and what you don't, as a good sushi chef will talk to you about the textures and flavors of the fish he is serving you, and that will give him a better idea of what to serve you and how to prepare it. The critical part is just to sit down at the bar so that you have an opportunity to talk to the chef and learn more about the fish you like and don't like.

all that was from DH, he's a sushi connoisseur!

Plymouth Meeting is a hike but we go there occasionally. I will check it out next time we are there. Sitting down with a good sushi chef is exactly what I want to do.

There used to be a fairly decent Japanese place in Cape May near Oma's too. Not sure if they are still there though.

My kids all started eating sushi at age 3, they love it. DD likes the maguro (tuna) and tamago (yellow egg omelet). DS13 loves everything but his faves are eel, tako (octopus), kohada (gizzard shad), fluke, and live scallop.

The younger boys mostly get maguro and tamago but DS9 is branching our more. He loves anything salmon.

And we get everything nigiri style (over rice).

Theres a great one in Collingswood called Sagami. It's on either 676 or 130 so that may be better.

There are some nice seafood places on Long Beach Island (Yellowfin? I think) and I'm pretty certain they had sushi to.

There are so many levels of quality when it comes to sushi that I always feel like I have to qualify "I love sushi" with I love good sushi. I'm not such a fan of grocery store or the Chinese buffet sushi where we live. My favorites are:

Fatty tuna (toro)
Yellowtail (hamachi)
Tuna (maguro)
Sea Urchin (uni)
Sweet (raw) shimp (amaebi)--you get a bonus of deep fried shrimp heads with this. I ate this once in Japan where the shrimp was so fresh that it was still moving, though headless.
Freshwater and seawater eel (unagi and anago--never can keep it straight which is which)
Tobiko (flying fish row)

I have total sympathy for the person who doesn't like natto sushi. Natto is one of the grossest things I've ever eaten.

I also recommend chirashizushi. It's a big bowl of sushi rice with the fish arranged on top. I used to order that a lot because it's often much cheaper than the other styles of sushi.

Have you tried the California Roll? It is basically veggie sushi and yummy.
Uh, just to be clear: California Rolls are not vegetarian. They are made from surimi, which is ground fish.

(I know you didn't say that they were vegetarian ... I just wanted to be sure no one could mistakenly think you did say that.)

There's a sushi restaurant near our house called the Sushi Station and it is such a great place! They actually have a covered conveyor belt that runs through the entire restaurant with little doors that you open to grab a dish as it goes past. Our kids think it's such a hoot to sit on the side nearest the belt and grab the plates. The restaurant charges you based on the plate color -- from $1.99 up to $5.99 per plate. Each plate has 4 or 6 pieces of sushi on it and we usually end up with half a dozen plates for the four of us. You can also get a menu and order specific items, but we think it's much more fun to see what comes past and grab whatever looks good. It kind of reminds me of a place you might see on the Travel Channel.
