Okay, I've never actually had it before.

BUT, I wanna try some when I go to WDW. Can anyone describe the flavors? What does the nori (I presume that's the name) taste like, and how is its texture? Thanks, please be as descriptive as you can. :)

I would suggest starting with some simple rolls or something. Try the california rolls, if you like spicy things- spicy tuna type rolls etc as a foray into the sushi. I'm partial to rolls that are inside out (meaning the seaweed is inside rather than around the perimeter of the roll). It really doesn't have a taste and texture if you put it all in at the same time then it all sort of blends together. Tokyo Sushi has some great sushi for first timers. I've also heard good things about Kimono's. California Grill has amazing sushi but it wouldn't be my first place to try it in case you don't like it as it is a little more adventurous and pricey.

Don't feel bad because I'm in the same plaace as you. I don't think I would have given sushi a second thought until I started reading about it and seeing it on these boards! Now I want to give it a try! Thanks for starting this "Sushi 101" thread! :thumbsup2

Add a vote to starting with the rolls. I think that a California Roll is probably the best sushi starter. It is rolled inside out with "krab", cucumber, and avocado. You could also opt for tempura style rolls. They are not as intimidating to people who are not sure about eating raw fish.

Also, do you have any sushi restaurants in your area? If so, it might be a good idea to try it at home. That way if you don't like it, you wouldn't have the memory of a bad dinner on your vacation.

my 3 years old fav is a cali roll ( she isn't a fan of the cal roll thats crab and mayo mixed she likes the cucumber avacodo one) and she loves the shrimp roll but she likes wonton wrappers for the shrimp one she calls them the green ones and the white ones
she will eat the salmon raw and the tuna and is ok but she will fight you for the other 2

(she will pick sushi over McD if you let her)

Oh dear...Be careful... she will get into the exotic stuff and your dinning bill will be going up... :rotfl2:

Regular maki sushi, (rolled sushi): If prepared correctly and using good nori, it should be crisp, like it has been toasted, and taste a little like the sea. However with the rice, which has a little vinegar, and should be room temp, the flavor of nori is blended.

However, there are the reverse rolls (as mentioned by a poster), with the rice outside and the nori inside, you can barely taste the nori. The reverse rolls also tend to make the nori a little chewy.

I would suggest that you ask the restaurant if you can have a small piece of nori to taste. That way you can decide if you like the roll regular or reverse. There is another roll, call temaki (hand roll), which is shaped like an ice cream cone and you can have the same ingredients inside. You eat just like an ice cream cone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much. I was wondering if the nori would be chewy or crisp, and you guys really helped. About the rice, is the vinager in it very pungent?

And to the PP who asked if we had sushi here. We do, and I'll be trying some soon for sure.

Some people just can't stand the though of sushi. If you are not one of those people I think you will LOVE it:lovestruc I haven't met a piece of sushi I didn't like. One thing I like is the spider-maki. Don't worry--it's not spider, it's crab with its legs sticking out so it has spider-like legs. I promise it's not gross, it looks and tastes fantastic.:)

You are correct, spider rolls are great. I also really like the Philly rolls. I normally don't even eat cream cheese, but love it in the sushi roll.

I order the California Roll several times each trip and had NO IDEA there was vinegar in the rice.........so from my perception no, you can't even taste the vinegar. LOL

Hope that helps! I'm working up my courage to try some raw fish sushi on my next trip. Good luck with your sushi testing and please post how you like it ok?

Thanks. I'm not really grossed out at the thought of eating raw fish, I've just always been a bit afraid to try it though. It is a bit intimidating when there's all those different kinds and you know nothing about them!

I agree that California rolls are a great starter- no raw fish. If you're nervous about raw fish, avoid anything with tuna. Also, vegetarian rolls are good starters. In addition to getting our fav rolls, we always get cucumber rolls, avocado rolls, and sweet potato tempura rolls (my fav veggie roll). You may want to consider trying a good sushi restaurant at home first. What city are you from?

That's my favorite. Yum yum yum.

We just started eating sushi last September. We now eat it at least once a month. (more if DH would let me:lmao: )

My DS8 is ok with it but my DS13 does not like it. (he is picky) DS8 told me the last time we were eating he wanted to try the raw fish. He didn't know that he was eating the raw rolls. He likes them better than the cooked! So do we. DS8 will even ask to go to the sushi resturant!:rotfl2: Try it you will love it, but I agree try it before you go to Disney!

I love that! My ds3 and ds7 love veggie and cali rolls with fish eggs, but haven't tried raw yet (even tho ds7 loves raw oysters, lol).
