Sushi for Newbies

Another vote for California rolls. I also like Boston rolls as well. That's with cooked shrimp, boston lettuce and mayonaise. There are also tempura rolls, too.

I have had a California Roll before, probably not at the best place though. It was at a Publix grand opening and they were giving out samples. I really didn't care for it. Maybe I'll have to try it again from an actual sushi restaurant.

I think the 2 kinds we have had, other than California, were tempura rolls. I think one was softshell crab and the other was shrimp. We loved those.

I was thinking about taking DS to a new place for lunch tomorrow so he can figure out what he wants for his party. I'm looking at the menu and they have a kid's sushi combo with a crab roll, Kappa Maki, shrimp and crab sushi. What is Kappa Maki? What's the difference between a crab roll and crab sushi? :confused3

Maki just means "roll". Kappa Maki looked familiar to me and that's because it's also known as a cucumber roll.

I had to call my DH (who loves sushi). He suggested you might find the answers to your questions from the following web site: www.sushismiles.com

:) Thanks. The link isn't working for me though. I tried doing a search for sushismiles and nothing came up.

Try typing it in manually. The link may not work b/c I didn't add the http:// to it :confused3 . It should work. I went to it right before I posted the web site address.

punkin, I LOVE uni too. Did you know it's actually sea urchin roe and not the actual spiny creature favored by otters? But, I like it with the yolk of a quail egg on it..While I adore it, I'd only recommend that to the very adventerous.

No. I did not know that. I had wondered why it looked nothing like the spiny thing we disected in college biology. I like it with quail egg too (or without-depends on my mood).

The best way to east sushi (IMO) is to sit at the counter and let the chef give you whatever he thinks best. Of course, you have to be open to some pretty strange things to do that (as well as trust the chef). We used to do that in our neighborhood sushi place when we lived in Long Island. I haven't found anyone who's taste I would trust here yet.

california rolls -- delicious -- everyone loves these! You might want to make sure they don't sprinkle any flying fish roe on top (some places do this). The roe is wonderful, but many kids would find it too strange to eat.

tamago -- these are sushi pieces with a cooked square of egg on top. Sounds weird, but they are delicious. The egg is a little sweet, a little salty, and sort of like compressed scrambled eggs. I think these are so simple tasting that kids would like them.

I agree with the cooked eel (can't remember the name) -- doesn't taste "fishy" or anything. Mostly salty/sweet teriyaki sauce flavor.

Seared tuna sushi is good for people who like fish but don't want it raw.

There are also many veggie types of sushi that even the most unadventurous eater will enjoy. Cucumber rolls, avacado rolls, veggie rolls (assorted veggies), and asparagus rolls are delicious and also inexpensive.

The ones with cooked shrimp are pretty good, but some people might find them offputting (the cooked shrimp is very pink and has the tail attached -- some might find it a little gross looking).

If you'd like to try some raw fish (I recommend it highly), you might want to start with salmon or tuna. Don't sit aroud worrying that raw fish might make you sick. Any reputable sushi place uses extremely fresh fish ("sushi grade") that is very safe (or as safe as any restaurant food!). Sushi makers are trained to make sure their sushi is both delicious and safe to eat.

good luck!

I would also suggest California rolls and Eel & Cucumber rolls. My DD14 tried the eel & cuke rolls and then got me to try them. They are terrific. They really taste no more strange than any other fish and the eel is fully cooked.

We will also get Shrimp & Crab rolls, Tuna rolls, Spicy Tuna rolls and Yellowtail rolls. Perhaps you could go out and do a "sampling" at your local Japanese place before the party. Tell them what your plans are and ask them to suggest some things the kids might like. Then you can taste test those before the party.

Crafty <who now must have sushi for dinner!>

Ditto.

It is part of my culture to eat raw seafood, but I only eat sushi made with raw fish from an authentic Japanese restaurant with a staff who is knowledgeable and a chef who is trained. Food safety is vital.

GL on your sushi adventure!
