Sushi for a beginner

Real sushi. Please it is real sushi. Not every sushi recipe has raw fish in it. Some is cooked and some is not fish at all. One of my favorites is oshinko roll (pickled daikon), another natto roll. Neither one contains any fish at all. Still sushi. Raw fish is sashimi. Has no rice with it. Just slices of raw fish.

:thumbsup2

I eat sushi and I'm vegetarian. One of my favorites is sweet potato tempura. :p

Every time I eat sushi, the seaweed turns me off. I just can't get past the flavor of the seaweed. It's like the only thing I taste.

I guess I could disassemble each piece and take the seaweed out.

? Why not just get varieties that don't have any seaweed in them?

I started out with Calif rolls. I love all kinds now, except raw, and I never use soy or Wasabi. I love the taste of it plain.

Anything with shrimp, crab or scallops will be cooked. I can't bring myself to eat raw seafood. California rolls are good. Some places make all vegetarian sushi rolls.

For a beginner, you might want to try something that is not raw. I personally hate eel, but will eat any other sushi, raw, cooked, mix of both, etc. At first, I was a little put off by getting sushi from a supermarket, but we don't have a Wegemans' near me. Fortunately, we do have plenty of really yummy sushi places nearby, they are so ridiculously overpopulated that there is one bar in the neighborhood that has a big sign out front that says "No Sushi!"

But California roll, philly roll, spicy tuna if you're feeling brave for the raw fish. I absolutely love all kinds of sushi, my favorite thing is to dip it in ginger dressing instead of soy sauce for extra yumminess.

Be willing to try it a few times as you start out. Took me a couple times to figure out that what I didn't like was the cucumber inside. I started ordering rolls without cucumber and now love sushi. My DH now looks forward to eating "bait" as he calls raw fish. My DD8 likes it too. We started her with tempura shrimp and cream cheese rolls. Just this Friday she asked to try tuna, I ordered a plain tuna roll (tuna, rice and nori) and she liked that also.

My daughters started eating sushi around age 2. I started them with sweet egg omlet, salmon and yellowtail as well as California roll. They both love sushi and we go to places that will make them up rolls to their specification.
Oldest is vegan and loves veggie rolls and natto handrolls. Younger one like shrimp anything, salmon, yellowtail, spicy tuna and pretty much any fish roll.

I got to try my first real sushi today from a really nice lady that does the sushi at my shoprite in Medford,NJ. I told her I never tried any sushi before so she recommended that I try the california roll and made me a fresh one right in front of me. I tried the California roll with imitation crab which tasted alot like just eating a salad with a little crab meat in it. :thumbsup2

I was the same way, but then I tried some seared tuna, it was still cooked (mostly) but it was pink and cool in the middle. Once I tried that I wasn't nearly as anxious in trying raw seafood, and once I tried it raw and found I liked it, I never looked back!

Mmmmm....now I want sushi for dinner! Too late, the pork chops are defrosted already. Dang!

Introduced to smelly beans (natto) by colleagues in Tokyo who seemed disappointed that I enjoyed it!
My favourite is katsuo (bonito) but it is seasonal and rarely available.

"Fresh" makes a HUGE difference in sushi. No way would I recommend eating sushi that isn't fresh. Not because it will make you sick, but because the flavor goes downhill pretty quickly.
