Susan Boyle Gets a Well Deserved Apology.

I love her "gobsmacked" comment! I haven't heard that expression in a few years. (since my dad passed away)

What a story!:)

That is what is bothering me about this entire situation.

It's all about how she 'showed' them. Well, what if she'd been another William Hung in terms of singing? Did she not deserve to be treated decently regardless of her appearance?

Apparently not.

If you are older, heavier, and unattractive, then you apparently deserve derision, scorn, and jeers UNLESS you prove that you have an extraordinary gift. If you don't have that gift, you should just lie down and let them kick you.

We are a very shallow sick society.

Agreed. She should have been treated decently even if she couldn't sing a note.

I just hope they do not try to change her into some *clone* singer. They all tend to look alike and run together for me these days (singers and actresses). I hope they just spruce her up and let her be herself.

She has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard also. It was like something sent from heaven IMHO. Very different in this day and age. She did not need anything to make her voice beautiful--just stand there and sing. It was incredible!

I agree. Sometimes you just hear a voice that takes your breath away; she has that. I was at an event the other day and a young woman behind me sang the Star Spangled Banner, along with the entire huge group of us. Her voice was so stunning that it could be heard above the masses. After the singing was ended, I turned to her and said, "that was the most incredible voice I have heard".(plus, its a difficult song) She thanked me and said that she is a professional musician and singer. Wow!

I get the impression she is a wonderful person and very deserving of all the good things coming her way. :thumbsup2

I guess making fun of people's looks is rather selective around here, it's ok if you're the one doing it, but god forbid if anyone else does

She did an amazing job with that song, but I will reserve judgement about her over-all talent until I hear her sing another song or two.

Les Miserables is my favorite play and she sang that song almost as well as the original cast member...

While it may be shallow, it is necessary (genetically). Physical symetry is one of the most important traits, and one of the primary factors in attraction. She lacks it.

We are still animals first...

On one of those interview shows, they actually called Patti LuPone, the original cast member of the London cast of Les Mis, to talk to Susan and she congratulated her.

You need to come see and hear a Broadway show. You can get that experience all over again. :woohoo: And YES, on Broadway, they come in all shapes and sizes, not just churning out "American Idol" clones.

A tabloid show, Extra, maybe, did a digital makeover on Susan. While yes, she did look enormously better when they trimmed her eye brows and gave her a more flattering hair style, Susan actually doesn't need to change her look at all. She is the wrong casting for Fantine, in Les Miserable - the song she sung. But, in the same show, she'd be a dead ringer to play Madame Thénardier, the wife as the thieving couple who take in Cosette and sing "Master of the House."

Also, she seems saucy enough to play Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. Or Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy. She could have quite a career playing fun character roles and playing down her looks even more.

Too true - Broadway has a need for many looks...

Yes, I know. I've been to Disney and stood in a line.

That does not mean, however, that we should seek to do no better than an animal. Otherwise, we'd all be squatting wherever and leave bowel movements in our wake.

She is one of those people who will become prettier (less homely) each time you see her because of her inner-beauty, I believe. Her voice is amazing and the look on Simon's face was a look that I've never seen on him watching Idol, he seemed amazed by her voice.

Bonnie Hunt just hit it on the head!! . WHY did they look so shocked when she starting singing?? As if someone, who is not considered classically beautiful could not sing? Pretty people can sing and not so pretty people can't?? The reactions were ridiculous.

I loved the way she talked about it...absolutely wonderful.

She really did hit it on the head. Bonnie often does!!

I could tell that Susan was beautiful.....sometimes inner beauty just shines through...just like inner ugliness does.

You can dream a dream ;), but you are better off trying to understand the behavior of others than to criticize. I am willing to bet that you were attracted to your spouse for the reasons programmed into you, not based on some "higher principal". :goodvibes

That was the first time I have ever seen Simon smile. I didn't even know he was capable of smiling. I think that was his apology.

The more I think of it, the more I think it's because of the venue. On American Idol, I don't think she wouldn't even have made it into the auditions because I think there is a cut off for age. And of course, eventually, a certain "look."

It was refreshing to see the British version is more about talent than a final image, although Image does obviously play a part in it, or people wouldn't have laughed to begin with.

But would Susan Boyle and Paul Potts, on the same show before her, really be so remarkable in different venues? In some ways, I think not.

I sat at a producers table, years ago, when an exBF was casting for an Off-Broadway musical. These were professional Broadway & Off-Broadway actors, expected to dress, look and play the part of the characters they were auditioning for. Some were typed out for not looking charactery enough.

As I mentioned before, Susan is a a dead ringer to play Madame Thénardier in Les Mis, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, or Gypsy Rose Lee. In the venue of auditioning for those types of roles, she'd be one of a couple hundred sitting out in the long hallway, ALL looking exactly like her, all being "clones" of that type of look and character. She wouldn't be remarkable. She might not even be extreme enough. They would all be expected to bring in the look, the character and the voice.

I think it's the juxtaposition, of her looks to people's expectations at that particular venue, that has propelled her into the spotlight.

I'm sure there are many struggling, professional Broadway actresses right now, who look like her, who watched the the YouTube clip and said, "Heck, I look like that and I've been training, singing and auditioning for years for this kind of break, and this woman has just jumped ahead of me and will be offered parts I still will be struggling to get in the door to be heard for - and I HAVE Broadway credits. :headache:

Were you not shocked when Clay Aiken sang so beautifully? He is a very attractive young man, but the voice was completely unexpected. It isn't an insult unless it is meant, or you choose to take it, that way... :confused3

I just love her.

But I do fear she'll need to work like crazy with a language coach b4 any Broadway. Losing your accent when you sing is very different then losing it when you use your speaking voice.

In the meantime, she can churn out one CD after another and I will gladly line up to buy them.

In the meantime, she can do the London productions. :thumbsup2 Or simply stay there. :) London's theatres are nothing to sneeze. I just don't know enough about them to speak about them - which is why I mention Broadway. But, American Tony winner, Patti LuPone originated the role for "I Dreamed a Dream," & then Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, both in London. (Glenn Close played Desmond on Broadway.)

London has a pretty awesome theatre district...
