LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Gary Hogeboom had a journeyman's career in the National Football League, playing 10 seasons with three teams and finishing with more career interceptions (60) than touchdown passes (49). But the former Dallas Cowboy will have a chance to become a champion on a different playing field come September.
Hogeboom is one of the 16 castaways on "Survivor: Guatemala -- The Maya Empire." The 11th edition of CBS' flagship reality series begins Thursday, Sept. 15. As always, Jeff Probst returns as host.

After several seasons where the game started with 18 or even 20 players, "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett has cut back the number of players to 16, as it was for the first several installments. They range in age from 21 to 63 -- Hogeboom, who turns 47 later this month, is the second-oldest -- and hail from, among other places, two different Manhattans (New York City and Kansas); Dallas; Chadron, Ohio; and Naples, Fla.


In addition to Hogeboom, who's now a real estate developer, the cast's occupations include zookeeper, fishmonger, hotel doorman, retired fire captain and not one, but two, people who list themselves as "Ivy League students." They're also a fairly monochromatic bunch: For the first time in the game's history, there are no African-Americans among the castaways.
"Survivor: Guatemala" will take place among the Mayan ruins of the Central American country, where the contestants will begin the game with an 11-mile nighttime hike through the jungle. CBS is also promising a pair of opening-episode twists "that will dramatically impact how they play the game."

Maybe they'll finally show some encounters with the wildlife this year. I'm sure the contestants must have encounters with snakes and such in the jungle.

That's interesting. It says they cut the cast back to 16. But, according to tvguide.com, Stephenie & Bobby Jon will be back & they're not in this list. I wonder if they'll spring Steph & Bobby Jon on the tribes

Hmmm ... wonder if they will be captains choosing the teams? That could be the "pair of opening-episode twists" mentioned in the zap2it article -- Steph & Bobby Jon return, and they will be team captains. But will that "dramatically impact how they play the game"?

And why not a NFL quarterback?
