What can my husband take to survive the flight, he is VERY fearful of flying, yet not be a mess for the rest of the day? I don't want him to be tired and I do want him to be alert. We are flying in the morning and only have a 2 1/2 hour flight. I want to be able to enjoy the afternoon and evening of arrival in the parks.

From what I have read on these boards, Xanax is the drug of choice.
When it wears off, there are no ill-effects, i.e. drowsiness, dopiness, and takes most of the edge off and may let you sleep a little bit during the flight.
You have to take it about 30-45 minutes before you need it for it to take effect.
I will be getting a script from my Dr before our November trip. :flower:

I always make sure I see my doctor for a Xanax scrip before I fly. A panic attack on a plane can be extremely traumatic, and even if it doesn't get as far as an attack, just being so white-knuckled on a flight is no picnic either. There's no need to suffer when a little pill going and a little pill coming home can majorly take the edge off the fear. Thank God we have these drugs available to us should we need them. Good luck.

Thank you both very much. He is talking about driving there to meet up with us instead of flying. We live in NY so that would be crazy.

I know EXACTLY how your DH feels! I am terrified of flying. However....as mentioned in the previous posts, Xanax works! When I was at the Dr. having a bp check, I asked him if there was anything he could prescribe for a white knuckle flyer....10 mg. Xanax is what he gave me. I can't say that I like flying any better, even taking it, but it does take that panicky edge off . I have zero side effects - I don't get groggy and I stay completely alert. It's not a tranquilizer, it is an anxiety relief agent.

I am also afraid of flying. I posted on this board last Oct. when my husband and I were flying down to Disney for a few days. Someone gave me a web site course on fear of flying. This course and Zanax helped. I was not groggy after the flight and I had more knowledge on what al those strange sounds were. I did so well that we are flying again at the end of the month. I have the web site saved(on my other lap top) and will look for it, but I bet someone else will come up with it faster.

I had not been on a plane in over 9 years--just terrified! I went through an online course and have been flying for over a year. No drugs needed. :goodvibes fearofflyinghelp.com I can't say enough good things about it!! It got me back in the air.
