I went to see the Bourne Supremacy today, found it kind of boring (choppy editing and too much action), and got to thinking about surround sound. I know it is popular and many people love it, but I just don't get it.

I don't want to hear bullets flying at me from my left, dogs barking on my right, helicopters flying behind me, etc. It distracts me, annoys me, and sometimes even scares me. I don't even like to have the stereo speakers hooked up to our TV. Stereo sound is great, but I prefer the sound to come from the general direction of the TV or the front 1/4th of the movie theater - not from my direct left, direct right, or behind me.

Do you like it or not like it? I have a suspicion that men are more passionately into surround sound than women, although most women might like surround sound, too. I'm just curious.

We just got it installed in the new room this week. I've just been watchign the olympics with it..havent watched a movie yet, so I'm not sure whether I like it or not.

Female and love it...but concede I must have a LOT of dormant male genes when it comes to any new "techie" stuff;)

Denise < --- but still has enough female genes to tell DH "ahhh, just turn up the radio" when he complains of noises in the lower steering column of his car ;)

I like it at the movies, but I bought it for the home and it got to bothering me. I guess I'm just getting old.

Female and LOVE it. I'm a techno geek though. :teeth:

We have a kickin' system in our living room, and though DH likes to watch it a bit too loud for me, I do enjoy it, I must say.

Though when he and my dad were watching "Band of Brothers" here, I kept dodging bullets =) So it's something to get used to.

it depends on the movie really.

I LOVED watching the soprano's in surround sound! DH's action movies, and stuff with Chuck Norris- all get Surround sound.

It's hard though, in our house, the DD's rooms are off the living room- so if they're already in bed, it's hard to have it on, as it is quite loud!

I like the idea of surround sound ... At one point, I put a surround sound system in our living room, however, it was a pretty crappy system, and actually made everything sound worse. I can't really afford a good system, so for the time being, no surround sound, although if I could afford it, I'd get a good system.

I have the Cambridge Soundworks system in my house and I love it.
It can kind of freak you out at times, I was watching a show at home alone and the people were in a restaurant, and I could hear people talking as I was watching the show I thought it was someone out side my window until I muted the TV and found out it was the people sitting in the restaurant talking around the main charaters.

I bet that was pretty creepy. That's why I don't like it so much - just too real sounding sometimes :scared1:.

During Beauty and the Beast, when the doctor knocks on the door, it STILL tricks me since the speaker is by our door.

During Dragonheart, there's a scene where Draco is flying around talking and his voice literally goes around the room as he flies. GREAT effect!

Oh my gosh, LOVE it! But then, DH and I have been big-TV-shopping and I was the one who said, "Why don't we just get the 60" TV?" :o

We love it in our house can't wait to get our new place built with a true theatre room in it.

My DH just had to have surround sound and I hate it! I won't watch TV when he has it on...I go into the other room. I don't like things too loud...that's probably why I don't go to the movies all that much. And i hate the sound coming from all different areas of the room...way too distracting.

Surround sound is great, but it doesn't have as much of an effect on me as the typical moviegoer because I am deaf in one ear. It makes it hard for me to tell where sounds are coming from.

Love the surround sound with movies and music. I also prefer my home system over the theater systems. :teeth:
