Surprising people with Disney trip

I'm a newbie on these boards, planning a trip to DL for our first family vacation. For those of you who have surprised loved ones with a trip, or were surprised, how was it done? I'm planning on keeping it a surprise for my kids and want some ideas. Thanks!
