Surprising a significant other..

My significant other and I are going to WDW in Jan 2018 for marathon weekend. I've been toying with the idea of surprising him with a cruise on the dream after our WDW stay. We have a long year ahead when it comes to me training for my first marathon and he is extremely supportive. Our last few vacations together have been to Disney for me to race, and I know he'd love something a little sunnier and more relaxing.

We are celebrating 6 years together this year, and I'd like give him the surprise in December, as his bday and Christmas are that month.

Have any of you ever surprised a significant other with a trip? How did it go? Do you have any tips?

You could always not tell him until you're heading for a boat and not back home...

If it's for a combined gift in December, you could drop hints in a subtle way. Get him things for a cruise that double as stuff needed for Disney, but have that Christmas gift of never ending boxes with messages and have a picture of the cruise ship in the last one.

I was thinking about making him a box with new swim trunks, and other little things and a note about the cruise. He would never enjoy anything if he didn't get to pack for it himself - we've had that conversation before how he'd never like to be surprised with a vacation where someone else packed his bags.. haha

I've always wondered how people are able to do this in regards to work schedules and such. Any tips?

Obviously still working out details. I'm pretty familiar with his vacation allotment and when he gets new vacations. He works for a fairly small company and I've met his boss and HR person quite a few times and would be comfortable reaching out to them in advance if I felt like I needed to. In reality, it's only an extra 5 days beyond what he'd already be asking for so I think it could definitely work. Or I just tell him the dates of the trip, just not the cruise piece. He knows we're going to WDW for marathon weekend but isn't as much into the planning as me.
