Has anyone else watched this review and thought HOLY COW lol?

You just usually don't see reviews this bad posted on sites like that. Usually reviews are more neutral or positive but this one couldn't have given any worse of a review. I'm perplexed but at the same time glad they are honest enough to put up their own review and not fear the hammer of Disney coming down on them for it. Watch the video. I will admit the food looks God awful. Was wanting to eat here until I saw the review.

I wouldn't necessarily let a review that is over 2 years old sway your decision if you want to try it.

They didn't take a picture of the first appetizer until it was all mixed together. They admitted it looked appetizing when it first arrived. FWIW, I love the soup they said tasted like dishwater. Lol.

Also no mention how the food turned out the second time since they returned it?

I don't think I could ever get past the "tasted like sweaty feet" comment. It literally turned my stomach lol. And this is from Dreams Unlimited Travel! I don't know much about business relations but I'd wager that even IF you find food that disgusting, you'd word it a little less .....harsh? So that you don't jeopardize relations with the company you basically work for. And I think the DIS owns wdwinfo? So I'm also surprised they put that review up there too lol

I'm not crazy about their reviews. They often come off as bias or flat out looking for reasons to not like someplace. When they start out a review by saying they went into it with trepidation and weren't hopeful, IMO, everything that comes after that loses all merit. They went in with a negative state of mind and had a negative experience. Go figure. They were looking for reasons to bash it.

We have enjoyed our meals at SAI, both before and after this review was done.

They don't work for Disney at all. The review of the restaurant would have no impact on their business relationship with Disney. DU drives a lot of money into Disney's pocket.

Really it is in their benefit to be as honest as possible. A happy client is a repeat client. They don't want to be the ones to sugar coat a review and you have a horrible time and then possibly blame them.

You do know when you say sites like that that wdwinfo is the disboards? I couldn't tell by your wording.

I'm not sure why you are perplexed. They give their honest opinions when doing reviews. Have you listened to the podcast? They don't have a fear of Disney when giving their opinions.

I think their reviews are fine. They give specific reasons why they do or don't like something. I'm just as critical as I think most WDW food is mediocre at best. Especially for the premium you pay for just eating on property. There are some places where I don't mind the price as the service and food are excellent.

I don't put a lot of stock into these guys' reviews because they tend to often be different than my personal experiences. In this one in particular, I discredit it pretty quickly when they are fixated on portion size to the point where that seems more important to them than the quality of the food and that's just not the relevant. I also disagree with them that the prices are outrageous, those prices are not that far off from many TS restaurants outside of Disney, unless they are eating primarily at massed produced chain store type restaurants, which would also explain their fixation on portion size. So ya, many reasons for me to not pay too much attention to this one.

That being said, I do find that San Angel is probably one of the most diversely reviewed restaurants on these boards and have many negative reviews with equally as many positive ones. That likely points to some consistency issues from the kitchen, hard to say for sure. I haven't eaten there yet myself, but I have been trying to get there my last couple of trips and looks like I will finally have a chance on our upcoming trip and I'm looking forward to it.

Me too! I've gone so far as to seek out some of those they hate on the most because I know chances are, I'll feel the opposite.
I too often wonder just where they eat out when not trying something at Disney if they think Disney prices are outrageous. We eat out often (too often but that's another subject) and our bills at Disney are not that far out of line from out bills when dining out at home. Sure a few are but most, nope, they are probably within $20 when it's 4 of us, closer when it's less. I'd say that's not too bad. And that's with us not living in an expensive location. SE TN is a pretty low cost of living location all in all.

As to a negative review on SAI, well, Disney may not care all that much on this one because Disney doesn't own it. Sure I'd say it's success is important to Disney but they are not going to worry about a negative review of it either. We personally like our meals at SAI. They are nothing like your strip mall Mexican (which I'd say is only loosely Mexican food any more) and in my opinion, a main reason for the negative reviews. The menu is unfamiliar when it's expected to be familiar. The food ends up being nothing alike and that can lead to a let down in expectations and in turn, a negative review. Not saying that was the reason WDWinfo disliked it but that is why many of the reviews are so diverse.

I didn't have the impression that they sent it back to be replaced. I felt they meant that they just didn't eat it and allowed it to be cleared away uneaten.

As easy at it is to feel swayed by this review I have found that my tastes do not line up with theirs. They have absolutely trashed restaurants that I enjoy. They have raved over restaurants that I do not care for. Listen closely to the criticisms about the flan dessert. Pus? Seriously? It's ridiculous and loses credibility with me. I enjoy a sauce like that over my dessert and I love creamy desserts. A couple of the guys really liked that dessert but were drowned out with the crude remarks about the dessert. The green entree dish was described so graphically but had someone set that dish before me I wouldn't have thought twice about it's appearance!

We have always had good meals at SAI, although we mostly go for a quick lunch of soup and margaritas, but we have tried the other food and it has always been pretty solid. I don't agree with most of the reviews I read, nor with the majority of Disboarders for that matter, as I very much dislike most of the most popular restaurants on this board. Everyone has their own tastes and experiences, I don't usually let reviews sway me, tastes are too subjective.

I always enjoy their reviews as entertainment. Unfortunately, in this case, IMHO they are correct. I love the decor, but the food is average at best. We have multiple authentic Mexican restaurants around us that put out much better food. We still go to it on occassion, only because you can't beat the theming.

Woody Allen opened his film Annie Hall (1977) with:

“There’s an old joke - um… two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of ‘em says, ‘Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.’ The other one says, ‘Yeah, I know; and such small portions.’”

I watch their video reviews and I do laugh when watching them. A couple of things I have noticed is they will trash a place in WDW and then sing the praises of a place in Orlando. Well when I do to WDW I have no intention of going into town for anything. The girls spend a day shopping in town but without me. Another reason I pretty much ignore them is something my daughter said. They look like a bunch of grumpy men and they never mention families. I noticed that as well. I plan meals on where they girls want to eat and lately you can't find a woman on their page to listen to.

Several points to make here:
  • An honest review of a restaurant is always welcome, especially a bad one
  • Hedging a review to make it sound less honest is a dis-service to the listener and makes you wonder if you can rely on any of their reviews dining or otherwise.
  • Not sure what you mean about "the company you basically work for". The DIS Boards and WDW Info are associated with Dreams Unlimited Travel. None of those entities are owned by Disney.
