Originally, we were just going to wake the kids up and tell them, "Get dressed, we're going to Disney today!" But with how early we'd need to get them up and how much two of them resemble Grumpy dwarf in the a.m., we figured they'd just whine, "I don't want to!!!" And roll over... so after agonizing over WHEN and HOW to tell the kids :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsgirl: about our impending trip to WDW (4/5-12)... we finally agreed to include it with our Easter festivities. (SIDENOTE: the kids' grandpa was instrumental in getting this trip finalized and he wanted to participate in "telling" them... however, he lives in a different state).

So, on Easter, after the regular festivities, the kids spied an enormous Easter Basket "hiding" on top of the fridge. We told them it was their gift from mom and dad and grandpa. In the basket were 64 eggs in four colors. Each of our four kids were assigned a certain color to open. They each got 16 eggs. Inside the eggs were puzzle pieces to make their own, separate puzzle. They had to put their puzzles together for clues to what their "gift" was.

Well, the night before, I had purchased the puzzles from a craft store... The kind you can custom draw on. I drew four different pics on the four 16 pc. puzzles: 1) Airplane w/clouds, a sun and a Mickey balloon floating in the sky; 2) Castle with a sun and mickey balloon floating in the sky; 3) POP Century with little mickey heads around it (for our dd's who can read); 4) Mickey's sorceror hat w/Mickey ears popping out under it.

Needless to say, dd5 :earsgirl: and dd6 :earsgirl: figured it out and were excitedly trying to keep quiet as ds3 :earsboy: and dd2 princess: finished their puzzles. They looked at all the "clues" and exclaimed, "We're going to Disneyworld!" So, we called up my dad; unfortunately, he'd forgotten to turn on his phone, so we left him a msg with all of us saying, "WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOING... WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOING!" Then dds5&6 start yelling, "Disneyworld, Disneyworld! Thank you!!!!!"

And now, the countdown begins... 8 sleeps til Disney!

The kids :earsgirl: :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsgirl: LOVED putting their puzzles together all day by the way! And they will likely make their way into the scrapbook, if they ever give them back to me! lol....

Sounds like the suprise went wonderfully. Hope you have a great trip!!!!

That is such a GREAT story! They will never forget this Easter. It was so special, and have an awesome trip!!!!! :earsboy:

What a GREAT Easter suprise and a neat idea with the puzzles! THANKS for sharing and have a WONDERFUL TRIP!!! :earsboy: :earsgirl:

What a wonderful surprise! Sounds like you did a lot of work preparing also.

Have a great trip! :sunny:

Thank you... but it was actually pretty easy. We had all the eggs out anyway b/c of Easter, so it seemed like an easy/obvious choice! Now my drawing skills, at least they were able to figure it out! I never realized how complicated it was to get the Mickey head and ears to get it to look just right! And my airplane, well let's just say the one we actually fly on doesn't look like it! :rotfl:

That was a great way of surprising your kids. I hope that y'all have a nice time there. ::MinnieMo

That is sooo Awesome how exciting for them! Are you guys interested in meeting up for lunch or something? (If not, that is fine too, don't want to horn in on your vacation)We love meeting other families and are ususally at the parks on Fridays and Saturdays (we live here) let me know if you are and we can arrange something.

(Just a side note so it can help you in your decision) My dd and I are both disabled, so we are in wheelchair (s) We still get around fine and can ride almost all the attractions. We'd love some other parents to do some kid swapping with.....

Aw, that's really cool. I bet it was a fun moment for all of you! :) Have a great trip!! :sunny:

That is so cool. I hope you have a wonderful trip. I'll be headed down on April 5th as well. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We decided to tell our son (6) on Easter as well. It was too hard planning the trip without getting caught. We didn't go to the extremes that you did. We bought the book "Walt Disney World for Kids by Kids" and wrapped it up. When he opened it, his first reaction was that it was just a book about Mickey. Then after reading the cover a little more and thinking about it, he figured it out. I missed the picture but the look on his face was classic. Now we can plan our trip together. It should be a lot of fun.

wow, that was a wonderful way to tell them. i love the stories that are shared on here. GIves others great ideas like that!

Hope u guys have a good time.

Weare going to be there the same dates as u except, I will be with my good friend. no kids. :( I will miss them.

That is so sweet! It brought tears to my eyes--those ages are so wonderful for the surprises! I can't imagine what surprises you have in store for them when you are there--

My in-laws live out of town too--so I know its extra bittersweet when you share things over the phone.

have a wonderful time!

My DS and her two DD's, a friend and her three DS's and I are going in June and the kids don't know yet. It will be the first trip for the three boys and their mother. We were going to wait until we got to the airport and let the father of the boys tell them but realized that might not be such a good idea with security concerns so we are going to tell them at my neices birthday party a few days before. The theme for the party is going to be Disney. We are getting a friend to get us autograph books and are going to make them "checkbooks" with Disney Dollars as well as some other stuff. We are putting that in their goody bags and that is how we are telling them.

You see that is exactly what I cannot do, I never have these original ideas....I'm not very creative.

I wish I had your knowledge and ability to keep a secret and announce such great news to my kids!

Great work....wish I had the same countdown....

Wow, that was a great way to surprise them! I am taking my two boys on a surprise last minute solo trip in nine days and as of right now we are planning on telling them when DH drops us at the airport. We also have to be up early so maybe I need to think about telling them sooner. I still have not made any PS or plans other than we will be in MK the first night to celebrate DS birthday! Have a great trip!

What a great way to tell the kids! Not only will they remember the trip itself, I'm sure they'll remember how you surprised them too! :)
I was going to surprise my cousins on Easter, but I caved and told them a month ago...I couldn't hold it in any longer! :rotfl:

It has been hard trying to keep it from the children we are taking. We have told them we are going to Cape Cod and whenever we talk about the trip we talk about general things like what we are taking. Every once and a while we tell them about whale watching, walking on the beach when the tide goes out, going to the Sundae Shop, trying to build up their excitement for this great trip to the Cape.

It is best to surprise the children at home. With the security at airports some of the security people really crack down on pictures and video. We also figured it might not be a good idea to have four screaming yelling children in the drop off area of the airport, the youngest girl will be 20 months and she won't understand. And they don't let you sit there with a vehicle for very long either. We had thought about just getting them on the plane and waiting to see how long it would take them to figure it out but the boys DF wants to be in on the surprise and see their reaction.

I'd love to hear about any other fun ideas you've all used for surprising the kids (or even the grown-up kids) in your lives! Creativity inspires more creativity and I just love that! Keep the stories coming! :flower:

What a great surprise! I hope you all have a fabulous time. My parents surprised my brother and me one year on Easter with a trip to Hawaii. Needless to say, the next day at school our present from the Easter Bunny was WAY COOLER (high school in the 80's- nuff said) than anyone else!

I'm sure your children had the ultimate bragging rights today!
