Hi everyone. I was hoping you could help me with my dilema. I am having a hysterectomy on Nov. 22nd. Yep the day before Thanksgiving. And We are going to WDW on the 12th of Dec. I obviously will not be at 100% by then. But I will not give up my trip!! So I was thinking of renting an electric scooter thingy ( I forget the name) however they are really expensive. So I am thinking a wheelchair. (Sorry DH and SD).
My question is how much do wheelchairs run? Also is there a cheaper way to get the electric scooter thing? Any other suggestions. I think I will be able to walk some but I don't want to overdue it and cause myself pain.
Thank you so much for your help.
Heidi

Have you asked your Dr. what you are allowed to do? What you are capable of doing a few weeks after is highly dependent on how extensive your surgery is. Mine was pretty extensive and Dr. didn't even want me driving for the first 4-6 weeks. I also tired very quickly (that stayed with me for almost a year). OTOH, I know women who had ******l hysterectomies and their recovery times were much quicker.

Maybe you ought to indulge yourself and reserve an ECV from an off site company so you can have it 24/7, which will help conserve your energy and heighten your enjoyment of your trip. Just a thought....

Good luck with your surgery. Have a great vacation!

Omigosh! I can't believe I got starred out!!! I think you can figure what I meant to say....

Hello and :welcome: to disABILTIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The fifth item down is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. The second page has lots of information about wheelchairs and ECVs.

Just wanted to send pixiedust: that your surgery goes well and you have a fast recovery!!! :lovestruc

Thank you all so much. Maybe it wasn't a woman wo starred you our. It is funny but you cannot even discuss a medical procedure. Thanks for the tips. I am having it Laproscopically and he said a 2 to 3 weeks and then I can do stuff just take it easy. I am interested in the ECV at other companies. Can you tell me about them. How does that work? Is it very expensive? Thanks again

I had an abdominal hysterectomy (HUGE incision from hip to hip) and I travelled by car from Iowa to South Carolina for a week with no trouble. Try not to overdo it, because you may be feeling a lot better than you actually are! Look at www.caremedicalequipment.com for info about ECV's. They deliver to Disney resorts and are pretty reasonable.

My husband uses Walker to rent his ECV. I believe there's a sticky on the forum concerning ECVs and Walker's number is in there. For some reason, I think it might be 1-800-Scooter.

You are fortunate it will be done Laproscopically. Hope all goes well!

In the disABILITIES FAQs thread, there are links to the websites for a number of the companies that DIS posters have consistently reported good experiences with. Randy's, Care and Walker are 3 of the companies. You can get the prices from the websites.
All 3 companies will deliver to your resort. Randy's requires that you be there when it is delivered so that they can give you some quick instruction in use of the ECV and make sure that you have no questions. That might be very helpful if you have never used an ECV before. The other companies will drop off the ECV at Bell Services so that it is waiting for you to arrive.

Most companies have a minimum amount of days you have to rent for and most give a discount if you rent for a week or longer.

Sue did a great job of describing them overall. I used Walker at the beginning of October (I use a cane, know without a doubt that I could NOT have managed WDW (ANY of the parks) without an ECV). They were good to deal with, very helpful on the phone, rates were good, etc.

One company (who I will not name) tried to push me to take out "insurance" with them (roughly $5/day) for "cancellation & any damage to the ECV" (think Collision Damage Waiver for a rental car). NOBODY else was suggesting this, and when I talked to Walker, they were rather amazed themselves. They said yes, the ECV's come back occasionally with a scratch or two, that's normal wear & tear. They made me feel FAR more comfortable renting from them than anybody else.

When we arrived at our hotel (Beach Club), the ECV was waiting for me. Only problem was that I'd asked for the ECV to have a cane holder attached so that I could easily transport my cane with me without worrying about dropping it as I went around, etc, and the ECV didn't have one attached. Called Walker and they asked if we'd be around for about 30-45 min (which we would be, had to have a bite to eat before heading to Epcot anyway). They said they'd be over shortly to make the change. About 45-50 minutes later, they were there & changed out the seats, no problem. A real pleasure to deal with.

Sorry to hear you're having surgery, but, hope that everything goes well! Be slow, be careful, but be sure to Enjoy the Magic!

You have all been so great thank you. I am going to rent an ECV. I believe we are cancelling the rental car we had so the price will be about the same. I really do want to have an enjoyable time. I would try to do more than I should and having the EVC will help alot.

FYI, there is no actual person that starts out certain words. It is a software program....so it at least isn't personal!

I think with Lap, you will be pleasantly suprised how quickly you will bounce back.
