Surf and Turf Disney Style…..30 days of food on land and at sea! 06/16 WPE

Coming out of lurkdom to tell you that I am loving your reviews...soooo jealous that you get to spend almost a month in the Disney universe, especially since I have no trip for this year, but I am enjoying living vicariously through your reviews and getting lots of great ideas for next year :woohoo:

Oh and I am also a WPE lover... I have been known to eat there more than once a day while I'm on vacation

First of all ........ WELCOME!
I am pleased you decided to come out of lurkdome! It's so nice to get to know ones readers.
Staying for a longer period of time makes sense for us as the flight is pretty long and expensive in the summer months and we like to explore "outside the Disney bubble" as well. ;)
Great to read that you love WPE as much as we do ....... and you are not the only one who eats there more than once a day! ;)

Karin, I'm so excited to be going back to CG in Feb. I think we'll ask for Ron!

You definitely should ask for him! He is definitely the best!
I am still so disappointed we won't get to see you this time. :sad2:

I'm joining in! I just love your food reports!

Glad to know you are in as well! :goodvibes

Good Morning 'Ron's Chocolate People' :rotfl:

Great review of CG, I loved the look of the Red Snapper; I would have really enjoyed this dish I'm sure :cloud9:

As always Karin your reviews are wonderful :goodvibes

Thanks, Linda!
I am sure you would love the snapper. Tom enjoyed it very much. And not much longer and we are going to see some YUMMY cruise food, to get you into the right mood for your upcoming cruise! :goodvibes

Sounds like a great night at California Grill. I am seriously considering having Max go to the Neverland Club at the Poly one night so Mark and I can sneak over to the CR for dinner there. Your veal, in particular, looks delicious.

As always we greatly enjoyed California Grill. And being treated so special was just the icing on the cake.
You really should have dinner there one night in February. Do you think Max will like the Neverland Club? But then, thinking of Jeff's kids, they loved the Oceaneers club on the dream very much too. Disney does an excellent job of keeping the kids occupied and happy. :goodvibes

Wow at being treated like royalty at California Grill - sounds like you had ana amazing time!! :thumbsup2

Ooh having honey with the bread and butter seems like a great idea.

I love that chocolate Valrhona cake and have to agree in it being divine :lovestruc

Yes, we did have a fantastic time there. The whole experience was just wonderful!
The Valrhona cake is so good. No matter what accompaniments it comes with, it is always divine! :thumbsup2

Ah that cake, I just can't get enough.

Me neither ........ it is just such a wonderful dessert, worth indulging in it. :thumbsup2

Day 8, August 20

Tangerine Cafe

I tried to update yesterday, but photobucket decided not to cooperate .. sorry!
So, let's try this again .............

We were one day away from heading to the Disney DREAM and we still had a lot of Dining Credits to "take care of".
So, after a very light breakfast in our villa we made our way over to Epcot. Around 11.30 we arrived at the World Showcase and since we had had a more than mediocre meal at the Tangerine Cafe the last time we had been there, we wanted to give it another try.

We got in line (well, followed the person in front of us) and ordered the

IMG_0981.jpg

Chicken & Lamb Combo Shawarma Platter - served with side of Hummus, Tabouleh and a Tangierine Couscous Salad with fresh Moroccan bread.
To say first things first, it was much better than the last time. The lamb was nicely spiced but a bit on the dry side, and the chicken was very dry and tasted like leftover chicken that had been sitting out long enough to dry off.
The Hummus was nice, but a little underseasoned, but I loved the Tabouleh, Couscous Salad again, a little underseasoned.
The bread was dry at the cut, but still nice.
I don't think we will hurry back, but at least the experience was nicer than the last time.

Tom doesn't care for Baklava, so I got to enjoy it all. It was fresh and sweet and nice. I really enjoyed it.

Morning Karin
I've always really enjoyed the Tangierine Cafe but I usually order the vegetarian platter which is really good
Not long until your cruise reviews start - very exciting

I'm glad your experience at Tangierine Cafe was better this time round. I have to admit I didn't like this place at all and probably would never return :sad2:

Hi Karin!:)

We went to Tangierine Cafe last time and had a lamb wrap - which was delicious. The salad accompaniements were all very fresh and tasty. The wrap bread was yummy - I always think the big hunk of break in the shwarma platters looks a bit heavy. We are looking forward to going here again - glad your experience was a better one than previously!

Karin, I had to laugh at your Tangerine Cafe review. Typical diser (like myself) we always need to recheck places we have been that haven't quite measured up. While the food might look good, it is sometimes is lacking. Why can't we just accept the first try and move on??? I do the same thing, always give it a second try and hope it will be better. You at least have free dining, I always have to pay out of pocket and that hurts!!

I'm sad we won't see each other again as well.:sad1:

We've done Tangerine twice and it was terrible both times! No more chances, we say!

Hi Linda!
I don't think we will be rushing back to the Tangierine Cafe any time soon, but maybe we could try something vegetarian next time. ;)
You are going to love the cruise reviews - there is LOTS of yummy food waiting for you! :goodvibes

Even though it was better than the last time, I don't think we will go back next summer, but who knows what happens in a year or two. ;)

The thing with the Moroccan food for us is, that I think it is not spicy enough. Most of the food was either dry or very bland and this is not the way it should be done.
And the first time we went the food was well spiced and fresh and soft. We really liked it then.
Hm, that makes me think that maybe we SHOULD try something else than the shwarma platters! ;)

Yes, it looks like it is a typical DISer thing .... I am still looking to find something else there, so we can "like" it more! :rotfl2:
You are right about the free dining and at least we only shared one CS credit there! :thumbsup2

I'm sad we won't see each other again as well.:sad1:

We've done Tangerine twice and it was terrible both times! No more chances, we say!

It's fun to see how so many people have so many different experiences at the Tangierine Cafe. ;)
We have been three times by now and our experiences went from really nice, to mediocre to okay. :rotfl2:

Day 8, August 20

La Cantina de San Angel

Those of you that remember my last set of reviews, might remember that we had quite an issue at the Cantina the last time. Nothing to do with the restaurant itself, much more with guests who couldn't make their mind up.

So this time we were happy to see that there were open lines with no one ahead of us.
We placed our order, told the CM we wanted to use a CS credit and went to the window to pick up our food. And we waited for a while and then a little longer and then ......

a cast member came over and placed a tray in front of me and before I could tell him that something was missing he was gone again.
So we waited for the CM to come back or any one else to notice us. They kept on serving other guests and we were still waiting.
I guess we waited for about 10 minutes until we could flag down a castmember and tell him that we were still missing dessert. Now, he went to pick up our dessert, BUT in the meantime our main course had gone cold! :rotfl2:
I mentioned it to the Cast Member and our main course was exchanged for a nice hot one ........ and that was it!
Off we went to find a table. We found one inside the restaurant and while I carried everything to the booth, Tom went to pick up some condiments.

We had decided to share the

IMG_0994.jpg

IMG_0995.jpg

Tacos de Carne - smoked beef brisket tacos served on

fresh handmade corn tortillas with

IMG_0998.jpg

Pico de Gallo,

IMG_0996.jpg

lime and corn tortilla chips

and some sauces from the condiments bar.

Now, these beef tacos were as good as they were the last time. There was lots of flavourful, moist beef in the taco shells, the tortilla chips were still warm and crispy and the sauces were very nice with it. The red one being really spicy.

Dessert is one of my favourites ....

Freshly made, still warm and soft inside ....... churros!

They came with a small container of milk caramel and were wonderful. The caramel is very nice, not as thick as the one in Germany, but like a very thick drinkable caramel.
I loved it! :thumbsup2

I'm sorry Tangierine wasn't great for you. I really loved it the two times I've been there. I think the secret to getting good meat is to have it fresh cut. If they cut it and leave it sitting around, the edge get hard and it can dry out.

Those Tacos look good. I still haven't made it to La Cantina yet!

It is a great use of a CS credit, as long as you do not have any issues getting your food! :rotfl2:
It is more than enough to share too! :thumbsup2

We had a great meal at TC the first time we went, the last two times, not so much, and you are absolutely right, if they have to cut it fresh it's nice, but unfortunately we hit it at a time when everything seemed to be pre-prepared. :sad2:
You HAVE TO try La Cantina - really nice food! :thumbsup2

Day 8, August 20

Karamellkuche

After some more World Showcase exploring there were some things we still wanted to try and take back to OKW with us.

So we made our way over to Germany and the Karamellkuche!

The Cast Member behind the counter was from Munich, so practically a neighbour, since Bavaria borders Austria, ;) and we had a fun chat with him about his time in the US.

We then ordered some

IMG_1761.jpg

Caramel Corn, which we paid out of pocket for! So wonderful, it was still warm and we tried a little right away, but took the remainder of the bag with us on the DREAM! :thumbsup2

I also got a

IMG_1039-1.jpg

Caramel and Marshmallow roll, which I had lateron that day. It's a wonderful treat, but very sweet.

And my last treat was a

IMG_1003.jpg

IMG_1006.jpg

dark chocolate and caramel covered strawberry! The strawberry was fresh and full of flavour and was perfect with the dark chocolate and there was just the right amount of sweet caramel on it. We sat on a bench overlooking the lagoon while I munched my strawberry and it was a perfect Epcot moment. :goodvibes

Both the Marshmallow caramel roll and the Chocolate covered Strawberry were snack credits.

Drooling! Those snacks look amazing!! I love living vicariously through your trips! But only a little over a month and I'll be able to have some of my very own caramel corn and chocolate/caramel strawberries. :cool1:

I'm glad you got a nice fresh hot meal at La Cantina and didn't have a repeat of your last experience.

Mmm am drooling over the Karamelle Kuche snacks!!! :lmao: They sure are great.

Ooh Karin, those sweet treats look divine :cloud9:

They were, Linda, they were! I cannot wait to go back and have some more of those chocolate covered strawberries! :thumbsup2

We will leave them a month to get up to speed again after you leave and we return! :lmao: :goodvibes

Yes, we were pretty happy with the new hot meal!

I was so sad when they stopped to sell the Hummel figurines in that shop, but they sure sell some awesome treats in there now (even though I doubt you would find many of them in the real Germany :lmao:)

Tom has made another advent's calendar for you all to enjoy!

Now, since we had a few misunderstandings last year, here is a little instruction.
There are 25 "doors" which represent the 25 days in December. Every day you may open the door with the number that corresponds with the day given.
All doors before that ...... you are very welcome to open again and again. Doors for days still in the future - no, no, you do not open them! ;)

Now enjoy the calendar!
