A supervolcano in Italy could erupt and cause mass extinctions, obliterate crops, and spark mass evacuations of nearby communities, scientists have warned.

The crust of the Campi Flegrei volcano, near Naples in southern Italy, is becoming weaker and more prone to rupturing, "making an eruption more likely", research recently published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment said.

It could erupt soon, a new study states, and it would be the first time since 1538.

If the volcano erupts, it could launch molten rock and volcanic gases high into the stratosphere.

It could lead to 100ft tsunamis, leading sulfur, and toxic ash to spread causing fears it could destroy crops and wildlife, plunging the Earth into a global winter.

Maybe I should move our trip to DL up.....

But really this is interesting and my DH & I were talking about this earlier today.

Interesting! We hiked up Mt. Vesuvius in 2017 and you can practically see the cap on it seething. We were told by tour guides that the entire region is volcanic and another epic eruption is only a matter of time. I'm not sure what kind of seismic/geological monitoring is being done, or what kind of accurate prediction of an eruption could be made, but after observing the region, there is NO CHANCE any significant number of people could get out on very short notice.

My heart goes out to the people in the area. Stay safe, friends.

The article starts out with all of these 'doom/gloom' scenarios and then later quotes scientists saying that is not likely to happen. Very poorly written and no scientist has ever been able to accruately predict when future eruptions will occur or how large they might be. Could a large eruption occur?........yes........but could also be thousands of years from now...........no one knows for sure.

My personal theory, worth what you paid for it, is that the next big volcanic eruption (earthquake, whatever...) is going to be somewhere that nobody saw coming. You don't know where, you can't prepare for it, all we can do is react when the time comes.

My friend just posted today on FB she is in Capri.. maybe I should tell her or will it freak her out lol

Yep, Yellowstone is overdue. BBC did a pretty good "docudrama" about Yellowstone in 2005. It's a fictionalized account depicting an explosion, but does a great job of explaining how a supervolcano is different. It's on youtube if interested:

I was always kind of surprised at how easy it was to get very near the Campi Flegrei area. The road goes right by there.
Oh, and not picturesque at all.

I don't know why we decided everyone needs to be scared all the time, but I miss the days before 24-hour news and the internet. I love talking to all of you, Disfam, but I'd trade it for the time when the news was 30 minutes a day and not constantly in panic mode. What are we supposed to do with this freaky article? Worry about a volcano? I'm good with God, and while there are lots of problems I can help solve, I guarantee a volcano ain't one of them.
