Supervising children ages 2 to 72 while running a Half Marathon! *update 3/5*

Thanks Amanda and Carissa for the info about walking the half!
I know I can run some of it, but not the entire race. You both have inspired me to try the half marathon. :goodvibes

I walked some of it. Most of the people around me seemed to be using a run/walk ratio of some sort. I did a run 5, walk 2 strategy but you can modify your walk/run ratio to your needs. Look at the Galloway training plans on rundisney.com. I think they're great!

Thank goodness for adrenaline! Having been awake since 2:45 am and then run 13.1 miles I was going by adrenaline alone. We headed over to MK on the monorail and then had to decide where to start at 11am. Not the ideal time to arrive at MK!

Jessica loves all the Dumbo-type rides and always asks to ride the Magic Carpets. On the previous 2 trips she hadn't been able to ride. I can't remember what happened in December 2009 but in August we were standing in line when the ride broke down. She handled it like a trooper and didn't whine or complain once. I thought it would be nice for her to start with this ride so we could be sure to get it done. The line was pretty short and we were soon on the magic carpets!

That's Popsie's hat and Zachary sitting up front with Nana.

The kids really enjoyed this, especially Zachary who wanted to ride again and again.

When we exited the ride, there was a CM with a little bubble gun that she was demonstrating.

She really spent quite a lot of time with Zachary even though we had no intention of buying her bubble gun. She was so sweet!
And look who Jessica found!

I really want her abs!!!! :lmao:

At that point it was time to head over to Crystal Palace.

We had never eaten at Crystal Palace so I wasn't sure what to expect. The wait to get in for lunch was a bit longer than I'd expected. It seems there were a lot of walk-ins waiting to eat there. :confused3

Waiting for our table!

We were seated and immediately realized that several of the characters had just passed our table.

Piglet came by for a visit!

Rabbit didn't go table to table but waited near the buffet.

We sat for over an hour but Pooh and Eeyore never came by (and Tigger was absent that day). Our server suggested talking to the character handler who was a complete and total jerk. We left without seeing Pooh but we were NOT happy with how we were treated. Our server was lovely and tried to help but :confused3
The food was pretty good. I'm not a huge buffet fan (despite the fact that we ate at several buffets!) but I thought this one was better than most.

What a bummer that you missed Pooh and that the character handler wasn't nice about it. But you saw Rabbit. I've probably been to CP about 25 times and have NEVER seen Rabbit. He's so cute.

How cool that you were up for touring the park after finishing the half in such great time. It must have been fun touring the park with your medal!

Signing up! All caught up. Congratulations on the marathon!!!:) Such an inspiration. I guess everyone should do it at least once. I am hoping to do it one day.

Travelling with other people can be a very frustrating experience. So far we,ve been fortunate but I can just imagine what a bad job I would do if I had to handle too many people at the same time. You seem to balance it well. Kuddos.

My first experience at Crystal Palace was less than ideal also. Not planning to go back anytime soon.

Congratulations on your beautiful family. Can't wait to read more.

What a bummer about not seeing Pooh and Tigger! :sad2: And to have a character handler that was a jerk makes it even worse.

But, I've never seen a picture of Rabbit at CP! :cool1:

I can't believe you saw Rabbit! I have never seen Rabbit! I am very jealous. Tigger must have called in sick and so they had to bring out the rare character.

I'll bet Jasmine hasn't had a couple of kids!! Sounds like a fun day, sorry abou the character handler, you would think they would realize that the point of a "character" meal is actually meeting all of the characters.

I had NO idea that Rabbit is a rare character! We'd never been to CP before so I just didn't know what to expect.
It was AWESOME touring while wearing the medal. Totally awesome!!!

Thank you for your kind words! I wasn't overwhelmed by CP but I wouldn't say I'll never go back either.

The annoying thing is that our server encouraged us to speak to the character handler. We wouldn't have done that otherwise. :confused3

Too funny about Rabbit! Like I said, I didn't realize that Rabbit isn't a regular. If I had known that, I wouldn't have been so annoyed! :lmao:

Totally true! She's probably all of 20 years old with plenty of time to work out and no baby weight to lose. :rotfl2: Even so, I doubt my abs EVER looked that good! :thumbsup2

I need to get with my updates because I'm starting to forget our trip! :lmao:

After our somewhat disappointing experience at CP, we decided to attack a few more rides. We first headed towards Pirates. I love this ride. Jessica (pre-trip) was afraid of it but agreed to ride with me. What I didn't realize is that Zachary is terrified of this ride. :sad2: Poor kid. He hid his face for most of the ride. I felt a little bad about that. Jessica decided that she likes Pirates afterall!

It was early/mid afternoon and the parks were surprisingly crowded. There was no way we'd be able to get on Big Thunder. Splash was closed for rehab. So we decided to head over to Fantasyland and my mom's favorite ride - IASW. This had also been down for rehab during our August trip so it was on our must-do list. Unfortunately the line was longer than the posted time. Eventually we made it on the ride!

I've been on this ride a lot of times and each time I notice something new. I don't think I'd ever noticed this chess set before!

It took a little convincing to get Zachary to look at the ride. He thought it would be scary like Pirates. Luckily he enjoyed it!

At this point we were exhausted and ready to head back to the hotel. But first we needed a few photopass pics!

I have certainly looked better!

I wanted a few pics of me with my medal!

Zachary was already asleep. My parents chose to take the boat back to the Poly because my mom was struggling with the monorail ramp. Tom and I needed the convenience of the monorail with a sleeping child in a stroller. It wasn't easy pushing a stroller up the ramp post-race but I did it! My legs were really hurting, especially my right thigh. But I also realized that "walking it off" was a good strategy.
Once we were back at the Poly, I headed off to the laundry room to do some much-needed laundry. Again, thanks to the DIS I knew to pack lots of quarters and I had travel-sized laundry detergent. Zachary had not only peed through an outfit (and on my outfit!) but the antibiotics he had been taking for his ear infection were messing up his GI tract. We were going through 2-3 outfits a day for him! I left a sleeping Zachary in his stroller with my parents in the hotel while Tom took the big kids to the Volcano Pool for a swim (crazy!).
The laundry room was nice, as these things go. Enough machines and a separate sitting area with vending machines and a tv. I had my iPad so I was all set. I met a nice guy doing laundry who was planning to run the full marathon the following day. We chatted quite a bit until I got a phone call from my parents that Zachary was awake and inconsolable. They brought him over to the laundry room to hang out with me. Once Zachary calmed down, my step-dad took him back to the room to get ready for dinner. My mom helped me fold the laundry and we headed back.
During my laundry time, my step-sister called to let me know that she had landed at MCO. She was going to head to her hotel (something off-site - maybe a Hilton with a convention center?) and then meet us at California Grill. Tom had gotten the kids ready for dinner (not quite up to my standards but I let it go - and I don't think there are any pics of it anyway!) and we were running a little later than I had hoped. We had an ADR for 7 and my sister was going to make 8. I had read that it's better to ask forgiveness than permission with these things so we were taking a chance.
We arrived at the Contemporary and headed to the check-in area for California Grill. Wendy (my sister) wasn't there yet and I made Tom negotiate for an extra person. One advantage of early ADRs is that it wasn't a problem (I can't imagine that going from 7 to 8 would be a problem since you need a table for 8 anyway :confused3 ). We were taken upstairs where we waited a short while (we were just about to sit on the sofas when they called us). Wendy had arrived just as we were being seated. Our server was very chatty and nice. My family made fun of me for befriending her.
One thing I love about TIW vs. dining plan is the flexibility. I would choose appetizers over dessert for most meals. We started with a bottle of champagne to celebrate my race. Then we had some delicious wine and sparkling water. My sister and Tom only wanted sushi. I ordered fish (can't remember what!). The food was wonderful. The kids were extremely well-behaved, especially considering how tired we all were.
A lovely, lovely meal. We saved $50+ using our TIW card. Not that the meal was cheap! :scared1: But well-worth the price. I was quite pleased with my choice.
We saw some of Wishes from the restaurant before we left. It was nice seeing it from there. We took the monorail back to the Poly and crashed!!!

Hi Amanda! I've been MIA on the TR boards, but I'm all caught up with your report now.

Congrats!!! I am so impressed with how you did in your first race. You totally deserve to be proud of yourself! I love your race photos! Nice that Tom was able to get some great ones of you and of the kids and the ones you took while running/walking must really be special to you. The solo photopass photos are great too. Love the race border!

POOH on the character interaction at Crystal Palace! The lunch buffet at CP was my boy's first character meal. The food was great, the interaction "meh". Tigger (my favorite character from the 100-acre woods- he may be my soulmate) didn't make it to our table by the time we were ready to leave. The pictures with Rabbit are very cute. Was there a line, or was he pretty accessible?

Be interested in hearing what time you crash!

Sorry about CP and not seeing Pooh.....the character handlers are usually good if a character missed your table, sorry the one that day was a real meany :sad2:

But WOW....RABBIT.....we have eaten at CP so many times and NEVER seen Rabbit. Almost makes up for not seeing Pooh :rolleyes1

Yep, very lucky to see Rabbit! Savannah was dying to see him, but the only place we found him was in the Halloween parade! When we had breakfast at CP, it was just the normal 4 characters.

LOVE the pics with your medal! I can't believe you ran 1/2 a marathon and then walked around MK! I think when I do it next year I will be laying in bed the rest of the day, unable to move!

Loved all of the IASW pictures. We actually didn't go on it this past trip. None of my kids requested it and I wasn't going to mention it. I know how you feel about getting those pictures of you with the medal. I have tons of those! I didn't ever take my medal off either. It's so fun to get all the congrats from everyone. I bet it was a cold afternoon at the pool. Sounds like your Cali Grill dinner was nice. I really enjoyed it the one time I ate there too.

We might have been at MK at the same time for a little bit. Wonder if we crossed paths.

Glad you enjoyed your meal at California Grill. :thumbsup2

The race border *is* cool! I was happy that they had that on photopass. I totally agree with your assessment of CP. The food was quite tasty but the characters were only ok. There was no line to see Rabbit. Depending on when you went you might wait for one other family but that's it.
I was probably asleep by 9 or 9:30pm!

Too funny about Rabbit being such a rare character and us not knowing. :rotfl: According to my family I'm *the* expert so you would think I would know these things. It does make me feel better about our whole CP experience. I know it's silly but it makes more sense now.

I think it's hilarious that everyone is jealous of our Rabbit encounter and we had NO idea! :rotfl2: The power of the DIS!
I found that sitting down for any period of time was much worse than walking! I got SO stiff when I sat at a meal and it was hard to get up again.

Loved all of the IASW pictures. We actually didn't go on it this past trip. None of my kids requested it and I wasn't going to mention it. Tom took the IASW pics with the new camera. He really enjoyed playing around with settings and finding out what worked and what didn't. I get to only post the good pics and leave the blurry ones out (there are tons of those, too!).
I love Cali Grill. We ate here once before (without the kids) and loved the food and the service. We didn't like the noise level (very, very loud!) but I thought the noise would be good for covering up the sounds of noisy children!

We might have been at MK at the same time for a little bit. Wonder if we crossed paths.

Glad you enjoyed your meal at California Grill. :thumbsup2

Too funny about us both being at MK. I feel like we just kept passing each other!
