Super Goofs on Parade: Foward...MARCH!

Just wanted to bump us up...we were down near the bottom of the page! Long walk/jog on tap for tomorrow, hopefully the rain will hold off until I am done although we really need the rain.

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

Oops, I thought I posted yesterday. My bad!!

So, has everyone gone away with Mike or what????? :rolleyes1

I took my bike out for the first time since last fall yesterday. A measly 8.47 miles. I forgot how you have to ease back into biking with that darned seat. It did feel good to stretch my legs in a different way though. I am over the soreness from my run today. I have girls to the gym today and 4 miles with hill sprints. I will save that for when I get home. Thank goodness it is lighter longer now, I can actually get my run in outside!! I have to start working on speed work with the girls soon too. That should be fun with teenage girls...:sad2:

So my question for all you marathoners is...how do you get over the feeling of numbness (that's all I can think of to call it) that you get from the continuous running? About mile 10-11 my legs are in a "whatever" mode and if I stop to do a walk interval they almost feel numb like they can continue the running motion but anything else just does not feel right. Maybe it's just me. Normally by mile 10-11 I can just tell myself to keep running and deal after I finish but now I have 15ish more to go...:confused3

Happy St Patrick's Day, all!

New round of speedwork for me today. Short version: it was fast, and I am tired! We'll see if I can maintain this.

Lisa No advice on the long run numbness thing. Haven't dared go that far yet.

Supposed to be mid-upper 60's here today. Too bad I'm stuck at work til 7pm! Oh well.

Have a good day, all.

Maura

I didn't post the last couple of days - my dad came up for the weekend, so I just didn't have time. Was supposed to have a 20-miler over the weekend, but my hip flexors and knee were bugging me, so I bagged it at the 10-mile mark. Did a fast 5 mile run yesterday though, and I have made plans to get in my long run on the trails on Saturday.

Lisa - I have had something similar happen. On some long runs, stopping for water or switching to a walk feels uncomfortable, and my legs seem wobbly. But once I start running again, the feeling goes away.

Lisa: I know what you mean with the 'numbness' feeling but after 20 miles I didn't feel 'numbness' anymore! After 20 miles it was hit or miss if I was running or walking and they both felt pretty bad! Not to be a downer, but the distance is overwhelming if you look at the whole thing. Just break it down mile by mile, or even step by step......you will get through it, don't worry!

I have only done one marathon, and I am glad I did it! BUT.........I will stick with the 1/2 marathon distance from now on. The time to train was my stumbling block.....took to much time away from everything else I need to do!

Beth

Cecilia and Shan - Congratulations for registering for the Peachtree. That's a bummer about all the glitches. Does it normally fill up really quickly?
On the race front for me, I just registered for the first half of the San Francisco Marathon in July. I'll be doing the Half Marathon that starts near Fisherman's Wharf, crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and back, and finishes in Golden Gate Park.

Steve - Yes. The first 45,000 spots were full by 2pm on Sunday. There is a lottery for the last 10,000 spots in this Sunday's paper. Last year, I mailed my entry the saturday BEFORE the application came out in Sunday's paper and I still didn't get in. This year is the first time they had online registration. And, this is the first year that all the runners will be timed, I am excited to see what that does to the dynamics of the race.
That San Francisco Race sounds awesome! I can't wait to hear about it!

how do you get over the feeling of numbness (that's all I can think of to call it) that you get from the continuous running?
smart aleck answer: Run farther.
long answer: When you get to the really long runs you learn not to stop while you legs are in the "zone" or if you stop, you make it quick. Believe me, by about mile 23 you will LONG for the numb stage.
A couple times while training for Goofy, I made myself stop and walk during the numb stage and it takes about a mile of walking to feel "normal" again. I put normal in quotations because after running 20 miles, normal is not really normal. I think it is similar to that trick we did as kids where you push againest a doorway with your arms and then walk away and your arms float up. I dunno, I kind of like the numb thing, it sure beats IT band pain.

As for me, the knee just doesn't want to run more than 4 miles. And the fustrating thing is that I feel better than I have felt in months and I really really want to run. I never did like irony.

Time for a little Goofiness...

Megan: Congratulations on signing up for the January full! You'll do great, and you'll be partying in the back of the pack with us!

Cecilia: How are your knees. I feel for you--hills AND ITB. :scared1: Been there and it ain't pretty. I'm sorry about the continued knee problems. Congratulations on the Peachtree, though, and the new timing rules!

Joann: Your March Madness spin class sounds like it was fun. Not as much fun as your Aiken trip, of course! I had no idea of your fall. You're a very strong person, and I'm thinking good thoughts for you this season.

Laurie: That you can run one day, play a hockey game the next, then run 7 the next day just impresses me to no end. :worship: Good luck with the NYC lottery.

Shan: I'm so glad you also got into Peachtree (DH, too). I know you like to run with a race in mind.

Maura: Running in shorts and a t-shirt. Ahhhhh.... Do you follow a tri-training plan?

Mike: Hope you get home soon. And that you managed to have a bit of fun in New Orleans. You'll need to explain to me the 8 +3 = Jack, though.

Steve: You're so close to being able to register for the full! Yay! I understand the logic, too. The full is definitely an experience. Word of advice: take the time to pet the goat in AK. What other race will offer that? :rotfl2: Oooh, the San Francisco race sounds beautiful. Take pictures of that for me.

Suzann: Have you done RftT before? I see it in your siggie and don't know if it's for a past or future event. I'm thinking about it for this year, if we can swing a trip.

Lisa: Hey, did you know you'll be running the CMM full with Dane from the Biggest Loser. It's true--saw it on the CMM press release. If you've pulled your bike out, way up there, than I'm definitely overdue. I'm dreading the dreaded bike seat, though. I never have any natural padding in the right spot. Wish I had advice for you on the numbness. :confused3 I'll be reading, though, to see what others come up with. I see lots of runners stop and stretch/massage their legs...maybe that helps?

SAHD: PD for the hip flexors and knees. I hope the trail run is easier on you for your 20 miler.

Beth: With your schedule I can't imagine adding a mary to your training. Then again, look at how many halfs you're doing this year. Wowsa.

I don't really have anything to report team-wise for you, but I thought you might like to know that Pittsburgh's 1/2 and full marathon, which is back after a two-year hiatus, sold out early. They hadn't been planning on closing registration for the May 3 races until packet pickup, but they received over 9000 entries. I'll keep you all informed as to how the race turns out, just in case you have a desire to visit SW PA in 2010. ;) I think with this economy, local races will do quite well, and that's good for the sport. :goodvibes

a day early...couldn't stand being away from family this trip, so I cut it short.

Got in an hour spin class today, and 30 minutes swimming.

Hope all is good in the goofy world, and that we are just neglecting to post up times/miles and not skipping the workouts that we KNOW are good for us!

Come on Goofs...up and at em!

Mike

Hi Goofs!

I just wanted to pop on real quick and let you know that I have been running- I've just had 5 one at a time sick kids and then I finally succumbed. So my workouts have not been GREAT but they have been regular (about 3 times a week running/strength training 1-2 times)... I will grab my calendar and fill out the spreadsheet and get caught up tonite.

We've had some personal family issues come out recently also and I've been shuttling back and forth to different therapy sessions 3 times a week also. It's just been crazy around here. I am going on a retreat next week too. So I'll be back for a week and then gone but then I'll try to be more regular!

And Suzanne is trying to keep me in line too- I just need inexpensive 5ks!

Happy Running!
Nicole

Hi all,

My work day started at 5:30 am today, so I am hoping to leave at 3 to hit the gym. I am willing myself to swim--don't know why I'm dreading it so much.

Nicole Glad to see that with everything you have going on, you still have made time to get out and exercise. Good for you! Hope your issues get under control soon.

Mike Welcome back---it's quiet here without you!

Laurie Hope you get in the lottery!

Steve The SF race sounds beautiful. I can imagine that running over the GG Bridge will be great. I've entered a lottery to run across the Mackinac bridge--not as famous, but you can sunrise or sunset over the Great Lakes no matter which way you look. (East to Lake Huron, West to Lake Michigan)

Hope everyone else is doing well and no ill effects from St Pat's day celebration--me--I was in bed at 9 pm!

Maura

Hi Goof,

I have been putting my miles on the document but not really posting here.

Yesterday I did 3.5 miles on my Nordic Track and then some upper body and Ab work for a total time of 55 minutes.

The ground is still thawing out and there is water in the basement but it is manageable.

Had a great St. Patty's day dinner that DH cooked up. A fantastic pork roast with all the fixings!.

Plan to fit exercise in for the rest of the week but DH has a B-day on Saturday and DD is coming home for the weekend to visit.

Take care all!

My training partner bailed.

I have an hour on the elliptical, and 3000 yards of swimming on tap.

yuck.

On the bright side, I am ahead of Lisa this morning (must be taking a rest day) and tomorrow is MY rest day!!!! :woohoo:

Morning Mikey and the rest of you Goofy people!!

I am taking a rest day but by force not by choice. After work, I have to drive an hour to a meeting for 2 hours that is B-O-R-I-N-G and could really be emailed to me for the highlights that actually matter to me. It is mostly reprimanding people for their mistakes (which of course I don't make) and talking about new policy/procedure. My issue with this is that during the 3 hours that I am losing, I could be working on the backlog of work and then we would not be paying all these people to sit around for nothing and having to pay to outsource the work. DUH moment. But of course, I am not management!

I have been putting in my miles and just not opening the spreadsheet due to lack of time. I will get my column updated today.

Back to the numbness issue...I was thinking while I was on my 8 miles yesterday, if I run 8 miles and walk 1 mile during the full that might give my legs enough break to be fresh-ish and get 8 good solid 10 mpm miles in with a 13 mpm walk break. Now mind you that I probably cannot walk a mile as I have limited patience but even a half mile would be a good break. I am SURE that I can run 8 miles quickly and efficiently but I am not so sure about 26.2. It will certainly not be quick but I am still hoping for efficient.

So input on this idea?? I am just trying to find a way to make it through with minimal damage to myself and my love for running!!! :goodvibes

Have a great day everyone and update that spreadsheet!

Hit the pool yesterday for my first time since last year--who knows when. Ugh! Did a short set--week 1 of what the tri plan calls for. Problem is, I spent too much time during each lap trying to concentrate on everything that was going on with my stroke and trying to breathe (always a good thing!), so I ended up feeling wiped out. Oh well.

Today I was back on the bike--no thinking, just pedaling!

Maura

Hiya Goofs,
Finally got around to updating my part of the spreadsheet - I have been maintaining my running streak, just not entering the data.

I was going to post that my next marathon (in April) was in danger of being cancelled due to lack of volunteers, but in the last two days, another 200 people (more or less) have signed up for traffic control, so it looks like it will be held after all.

Debra - Thanks for the PD. My knee was just a little twingy, and the same for the hip flexors. Our home treadmill is stuck on a 2% incline, which starts to get to me if I run on it for more than a couple days in a row. DD was sick last week, so no trips to the Y for me.

Nicole - Sorry to hear things are so crazy. Hope it all eases up soon!

Mike - Hope the swim went well. Sorry to hear that your partner bailed on you.

Lisa - There is nothing wrong with walking from time to time to keep your legs fresh. Walking a full mile at once might be a bit much (as you said), but perhaps a short walk of a minute or two every mile or so would give you the same benefit - that's what Galloway recommends. Quite a few people walk through the water stops at marathons, which can amount to the same thing.

Maura - Good luck with the tri-training. I can't imagine doing the whole swim - bike - run thing.

Good morning all.

Just updating the spreadsheet. Hoping for 1000 minutes this month, I am at almost 800 so I should make it.

Next 5K is on April 4th, can't wait. Never thought I would say that. My local running store posted most of their fall races yesterday. Looks like I am in for most of the same races I did last fall. Now just waiting for Race for the Taste to open and want more info on the Tower of Terror 5K.

SAHDad...glad more volunteers signed up to help with traffic. I guess living here near WDW where there are almost too many volunteers at most races and then there is a waiting list, I never thought this would be a problem.

Have a great Thursday everyone!! The weekend is almost here.

Lisa: I second the motion to walk through the water stops. That's what I did on Sunday and it worked well. It allows a 'rest' period, and helps me not to look like a dufus trying to run and drink at the same time. The water stops are usually spaced nicely at the RnR races, and it's a good rule of thumb.

Beth

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: There is NO WAY I could EVER not walk through a water stop!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

There is not a smilie that is dumb enough to equate to me actually trying to run through a water stop. On top of which, I find them slippery and I would hate to risk injury like that.

So yeah, I walk through ALL water stops no matter what. I am looking more for a way to shake the feeling out of my legs. A friend has sent me a link to some Galloway reading that I need to print out and do later today after the *&%$# meeting I have to go to.....

Hi Goofs!

Ran 6 miles today with NO knee issues!! Yeah! Hopefully I have learned my lesson and won't ramp my training up to fast again. :rolleyes1

Lisa - The trick to walking during the marathon is start sooner than you need to and to keep the walk section shorter than you would like. I would practice this with a few long runs and see how it feels. During the 2008 marathon, I had horrible cramping when I tried to walk. I could run super slow, skip, hop or dance but if I actually dropped to a walk my legs screamed.

My plan has always been to run at a comfortable pace for as long as I could, then to start taking walk breaks as I needed them. But I always walk though the water stops - its crazy dangerous to try to run through unless you are WAY up in front. (Of course those are the guys that leave their half full cups all over the road for us to slip on.) I agree with keeping your walk breaks to a minute or two - eventually it starts to get tougher and tougher to start running so you have to be careful of walking too long.

As you run the marathon you will notice this strange phenomenom: At every water stop the runners will walk a few more steps before they take off running. By about the halfway point, runners will start walking when they SEE the water stop and walk until they have finished every drop. By about mile 20, runners will stop to walk when they HEAR the water stop. So its natural to take longer and longer walk breaks as you go along.

Take care everyone! I am off to update the spread sheet.
Cecilia

Hi Goofs.
