Super Goofs on Parade: Foward...MARCH!

SMART....very smart attitude.

No, smart would be to not run on it at all for a few days. but since I have more than 7 months invested in a running streak, I am understandably hesitant to break it without good cause. It hurts, but more of a discomfort level, rather than a sharp stabbing pain. If it doesn't get better soon, it's off to the doc for me.

One thing I am really struggling with (and any suggestions or insights are more than welcome) is mentally putting a missed or short workout behind me.

I feel like I have to "make it up"...and while I know in my head that I can't make it up, my gut just burns with feeling like a slackerloserwimpskirtboy when I come up short. I know that trying to make up workouts can and will (at least for me) lead to over working my body and an injury...but I just have real trouble shaking that feeling of being less than I aspire to in coming up short.

I know that the workout plan that I downloaded off the interweb wasn't designed specifically for me and my goals...but I still feel like a jerk when I don't complete what's written down.

Any ideas? :confused3

Mike

Sorry to hear about the presentation, BTW. It's always helpful to have the documentation handy, isn't it?

Regarding the workouts - it's tough. I, too, have an inclination to try and "make up" workouts where I have cut things short or done an easy done instead of hills or intervals. The only thing I would saw is to resolve to complete the workout the next time it comes around again. For example, if you passed on a long swim, or intervals today, but have them on tap for next Wednesday, don't beat yourself up today, but try harder to complete them next week.

Happy Thursday everyone!

I will be updating my totals soon too. Jeez, does it seem like it should be almost April already???? Yeah, I am ready for spring but it seems like winter flew by...until the last month or so...

AFM, I got my new shoes right before my run yesterday. Love the Pearl Izumi's. Most comfortable, best arch support, widest toe box, can't say enough about them. Unfortunately they are barfy screaming yellow (not my fave color) but I will look past that one fault!! I got 8 miles averaging 10:12 mpm miles. I have not run that fast in quite some time. I had 2 miles under 9:30!! Of course, that was only 8 and 26.2 is a far run from 8...:goodvibes With these shoes though, I am feeling a little more confident. I also discovered through a total fluke that I have a sliding inguinal hernia. I only feel it during my runs on a fast downhill so I guess I won't be doing any of those. Thank goodness VAB is flat and I can just run fast on the flat!! Hopefully this will not get any worse between now and 4/25! I have the girls to the gym today and XT or rest. Not sure which one I will take so tune in tomorrow!!

Happy days everyone!!! :flower3:

Good morning Goofs!

Lisa: Nice on the shoes!!!! I love new shoes! It would be nicer if they were a nicer color though :sad1: Good job on the run!

AFM: I got in a new class at the gym last night......kickboxing! Loved it!

Okay Goofs, tough love time...The following have not reported any miles for February or March currently:
Escape
Nukeman
UP_Disney
ArelysAdriana

Disnik has reported no miles for March.

Also, Joanne, you have no miles reported for either February or March but you have clearly been here with us. Do you have no miles/minutes to report (which I know you do because you have been horsing around LOL)?? If you are having a problem with the spreadsheet let me know because I will take a wet noodle to Mike post haste!!! If you need to, PM me the miles/minutes that you have and I will post them for you.

So, if the people who have not reported for either February or March do not at least check in and let us know if there is an issue/injury, etcetera, I am placing them on the inactive roster and requesting replacements as of April 1. We are holding our own with the miles/minutes but everyone needs to participate to make this work. We are a team.

Everyone else, woo hoo super job!!!

Shan, you just keep healing so you can kick some butt later!!

Okay tough love session over. I do love each and every one of you and I want us to remain a team...all of us...so please at least check in!!

Shan: I don't know if you saw it or not.....I donated 5 miles and 15 min on the recumbant bike on 3/24. Don't want you to miss it!

Beth

Morning Goofs. TGIF!!!

Mike, a boy can dream...:cloud9:

Shan, I am going to give you my miles from yesterday that I did on the bike at the gym. They were not much but every little bit counts. Of course I don't have my journal right now so I will get them to you in a bit!! **EDIT** Shan, take 6.78 miles/15 minutes for the bike!!

I hope all you Goofs are out there getting it done cuz you aren't here!!! :magnify:

As for me, girls to the gym, biked while they did plyos. Came home, made my oatmeal for the next 4 days, some oatmeal bars for snacks and then dinner. David shut his already blackened fingernail in the door of the loader so I spent the rest of the evening trying to nurse that. Man is it swollen this morning and super red and hot. Poor kid. Today is 6 miles. I shut off my alarm this morning and went back to sleep wherein DH woke me up at 4:45 when I have to be on the computer at 5:00. Not a good morning here. I am still trying to find my awake button. :sad2: Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight. I have this stuffy nose cold/allergy thing and I guess I am sleeping worse than I thought!!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!! April is just around the corner!! Does anyone have a cute suggestion for the April thread name????

Good Morning All-
I did an hour spin class yesterday and I was beat after. On the other hand:

I REGISTERED FOR THE MCM!:yay:

I am running for the Semper Fi Fund- helps wounded Marines and their families (plus the Alzheimers' Association) If anyone wishes to donate the link should be up shortly (hint, hint!)

The Marines really inspired me last year and I am hoping that by running for an organization that it may return some help and support their way.

TGIF--and I really mean it! Rest day for me today--need a mental health break too, but no such luck.

Mike I have come to make peace with the occasional missed workout because I have stopped worrying that 1 or 2 or sometimes even a week missed will totally trash what I've been working on. For me, that was the hurdle to get over--that I could still reach my goal even though the training didn't go exactly as planned. (So either I'm better than I think, or my goals aren't high enough!!)

Joanne Congrats on signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon (I am assuming that is what MCM is?) Please post the link--no hint needed.

Lisa May your Friday improve....and I am terrible with thread names. I know it should have something to do with April or Spring, but all I can think of is --never mind--it was so lame I edited it already! But it was something involving April showers, and Goofs with (Power? Flower? ) YECH!

So my boss says to me "We need to talk". Oh joy, another conversation about my work style.....

Maura

Morning Goofs!

Quick run by as only in office until noon today. Have team lunch and boss said to head on out after. We like our fearless leader.

Not that this is exactly impressive to all of you speedy people, but I got in my first set of intervals last night. 50 minutes doing 4 walk/1 run. No problems, no issues and felt like could've kept going but that's all the plan called for so decided to to push my luck.

Have to work on actual running technique. I was a sprinter in high school so always on the balls of my feet and nearly straight down to get power pushes. Obviously not the way to go for distance. Problem is when I try to put my heel down first feels like I'm landing nearly flat. Gotta figure out how to land in front of my, I think. Make any sense? Got any suggestions?

Sorry all about me, but will catch up this eve and will get our numbers into sheet as well.

Have a great day!!

Liz, yay for running!! :woohoo::woohoo: Personally, I think it is just so you can keep up with Patrick walking...:rolleyes1

I am a midfoot striker as opposed to a heel strike. I used to think this was wrong, striking mid foot and I tried desperately to change to a heel strike. I ended up with some issues from trying to change. Some people are toe runners, some people are heel strikers and then there are us abnormal mid-foot strikers. Maybe just try to not lean forward so much (like a sprinter) and this will at the very least put you in the midfoot strike range. The PIs are great for midfoot strikers so you should be set on the shoe. NB makes some specifically for midfoot strikers (850s maybe??) and there have to be some more out there.

You know when you turn your shoes over to see if you pronate/supinate? I also thought I was a supinator due to my high arches but I have a wear pattern nearly straight across the ball of my foot and some on the heel. I used to buy stability shoes exclusively and now that I am in a neutral shoe cushioned for my strike, life is much better!!! :upsidedow

Good morning Goofs!

Lisa: Hope your morning gets better! I had a really bad day on Wed......I know what you mean!

Maura: Hope your work day gets better too! I used to get 'you are not approachable in the morning' speeches at work before I had kids. I never got up early enough to be bearable at work early. AFter kids and getting up SUPER early, I got more approachable because I had been up most of the night!

Hi Goofs !!
Yeah, I know, "You never call, you never post"
But here I am.
I have a coupla stupid suggestions for the April thread title, feel free to ridicule at your leisure..
Getting active in april with the goofs
April "Fool"ing around with the Goofs
Goofy April Activities

Let the flames begin, I have flame proof suit AND Jiffy pop in hand.

Yup, we went out and intervalled yesterday, a nice 4 miles...
So afraid I will crash and burn at teh CMM, have to really get the miles in,and the damn weather is SO not cooperating for our 20 miler this weekend.
Chance of accumulating snow Sat afternoon !!!
Just got to dress for it again and slog through it.
I will finish and I will come in near or at my 6 hour goal!!

Wishing a good weekend to all !
And happy training miles, too.

Patrick

I'm back! We had a great 4 days at WDW and then a terrific 3-night cruise on the Wonder. I did get in a short run at SSR on 3/16, partially on the TM in their gorgeous gym, and then (after moving my clothes from washer to dryer) partially on the SSR grounds and golf course. Bad news is, the IT band wasn't happy with that.

I laid off it until the Castaway Cay 5K on 3/21. Such a nice course! Naturally, everyone else was super-speedy and I lost the entire pack when I took a potty break, but I did 3.23 miles in 36:42, which is not too shabby for me. And, awesome bonus, the IT band didn't hurt!

But I didn't run again until last night, and I was just not feeling the love. I bailed after just a mile. The shins hurt and the IT band was threatening. (I guess my body wants to be back at Castaway Cay?) I've got to do more stretching and get back to running more during the week. I'm scared to do a long run until I get my basic fitness level back to where it was. It's sad how quickly it all went downhill!

Anyway, sorry for the all-about-me post. I haven't had time to read through the thread due to the back-at-work-after-a-vacation nightmare, but I hope everyone is doing well, recovering nicely and/or remaining injury-free. I hope to be much more active on this thread next week and in the coming months. See ya then!

Maura - I hope "the talk" goes well.

Liz - Nice job with the intervals. That's the only way I train now. I couldn't run the longer distances without them. I guess I'm not advanced enough yet to think about my running technique. I just try (mostly successfully) to stay upright and not do a faceplant! :headache:

Patrick - I'm sure you will do great at the CMM. It sounds like a really fun event. I like all of your name suggestions but I think I like April "Fool"ing around with the Goofs the most.

Kim - Welcome back! I'm glad you had a great trip. Sorry to hear about your IT band. At least it didn't bother you at the Castaway Cay 5K. I'm really looking forward to running it in May.

AFM, I just ran a fun 5K race this morning. I'll whip up a race report and post it later tonight.

-steve

Hey Goofs! Still here, haven't posted much lately but I've updated my numbers on the spreadsheet. Lots of stress right now and I've gained a few pounds...I'm more peeved about the weight gain than the stress. I'm not doing anything different than last month, two months ago, etc so I don't know whats going on. Maybe I need a solo vacation to a quiet beach somewhere...

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!!

Luckily all of my friends survived the Disney cuts this week, so thankful!

I ran the first and hopefully annual Big Foot Race 5K this morning. It's a fundraiser for the kinesiology club at the university. There were 94 runners in all. A lot were members and friends of the kinesiology club but there were several members of our local running club there as well.

The campus is set in the hills of a beautiful forest. I've run another 5K here but it stayed mostly on the paved campus. I had no idea this race would take us through narrow trails through this amazing forest. I can't believe I've never explored these trails in the 13+ years I've lived here. I sure have been missing out. I plan to spend a lot of Saturdays racking up mileage in there this summer.

I've been running just under a 9:00 pace on longer runs lately so I was hoping to beat my 5K PR of 9:04 but after learning it was a trail race, I quickly gave up that idea.

The gun went off shortly after 10am and we were off! We started on the track and quickly left to wind through the campus walkways and out on the street for approximately 1/8 of a mile before making a sharp left into the community forest.

There, we started a fairly steep incline on a narrow dirt path. Parts of it involved stairs and it quickly became brutal. I ran a lot longer than I thought I would before walking but it was getting hard to breathe and I was getting too close to my max. heart rate for comfort.

When I was nearing the summit, I noticed my average pace was 11:45 so I knew I'd never get close to that PR. I was so happy to see the downhill start. I actually flew down that hill, being very careful to not slip on the muddy surface. I ended up finishing with a 10:55 pace which was far from my goal but I'm glad to see I picked it up.

In all, it was an incredibly beautiful but grueling experience.

Now, if you aren't too tired of my rambling and want a little humor, I'll give you a story you might find amusing. Let's rewind...

During one of my first races, I noticed a man who looked a lot like a strange guy I used to know. This made him stand out to me. He is quite a bit taller than I am, about 15 years older, and, much like me, doesn't exactly have the runner's build. I also noticed he was finishing just ahead of me in every race. This guy was my kryptonite. I just couldn't beat him. The better I got, the better he got.

I finally did beat him in a half marathon. I remember how great it felt to pass him late in the race. I finished only 30 seconds behind him in a 10-mile race a few weeks ago. I could have beaten him had I not fallen and also started in the back of the pack. It took me about a minute to get around all the walkers. Anyway, enough excuses. Can you tell this guy bothers me? I don't think he even knows I exist!

Fast forward to today. I saw him picking up his bib and got excited for another chance to beat him. I'm 1-5 against him but confident that my hard work would pay off today. I lined up near the front of the pack to make sure I got a good start. While listening to the pre-race instructions, I looked around and saw him lined up directly behind me! How unaware this guy was to my desperation made me even more hungry to beat him.

As the gun went off, I took off and weaved around a few people until it opened up. I looked at each person who passed me to make sure it wasn't him. I got worried during a lot of my walking up hill but I figured he must be struggling up it too. I looked behind me quite a few times but never saw him.

Once the down hills started and I was running really quickly, I had a good feeling he wasn't going to catch up. I could finally see the last hill and the finish coming up. I could hear the cheers of the spectators. I'm sure they were all there to cheer me on in my triumphant victory against my arch-nemesis.

I sprinted to the finish line and strutted over to the water table to get my much-deserved refreshments. And there stood that SOB, oblivious, munching on an orange. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
