Super Goofs Challenge April Edition

Maura: Do you stretch a lot before and after? I have found this truly helpful in regard to my hip/IT and PF issues. Just a thought. Here's hoping they are the phantom pains that I tend to get 1-2 weeks prior to a race, and I mean anything from a 5K on up.

Cecilia: I don't know about Beth but I am TOTALLY up for the RNR half for 2009. It would be a major quickie weekend for us as our kids start school the Wednesday prior to Labor Day. Gee, hmmm, anniversary, maybe we could do the adults weekend vaca.....ooooh, more planning in the future. Did I mention I am an anal planner or plannerific??? Very listy too....maybe my kids are right???

So, anyone else up for RNR VA beach Labor Day weekend 2009????:rolleyes1

Lisa I am very diligent about stretching--the funny thing is that before I started running I was most worried about ITB, so I stretch (quads, hams, calves, achilles, shins, ITB) before and after. I think the pains will all go away with rest--so I think I'll stick to short runs between now and next weekend.

all about me...

Cecilia, that would be great (checking on the socks) I will try just about anything! No, I dont get pedi's, my daughter has been trying to talk me into a mom & me package, but so far I havent given in...

Lisa, it's still there, I've split it open several times, so I think that's slowing the healing process.

Kristi, here's what I found out...

apparently, when you get running shoes, you are supposed to take out the insole and replace it with gel inserts. I didnt know this. So I didnt do it. Well, the girl at the store pulled my insole out, and on the bottom of it is a small squishy pad, EXACTLY the same place and size of my blister. So, I got some of the gel inserts to try, and also got a pair of Saucony's. I'm going to try and get out for a longer run sometime this week, and try my Nike's w/the inserts, and see what happens...if I still get blister rubbing, I am going to try the Saucony's...I really dont want to go into the Minnie with brand new sneakers though, so I'm really hoping the inserts do the trick.

Angie, I am glad that you have taken some measures to solve the problem. Make sure when you open that blister that you are putting a drying agent like bacitracin or Neosporin on it to speed the healing. Band-Aid makes blister bandages with the stuff already in them and a squishy gel pad. Feels pretty gross but they worked on mine.

As a side note of encouragement, I ran twice in my Saucony's before the half marathon in WDW and my feet were fine. It is an old adage that you need to break in your shoes. New technology, yadda, yadda. If your shoes fit properly, you should be fine....but I still run in mine at least once before a race.

Angie - now that's weird. I get my shoes at the same store. Chad has been getting his shoes there since 2001. No one ever said to get gel inserts! We never (knock on wood) had blister issues, but they never, ever told us to do that. Huh? :confused3 Whatever the case, I am keeping everything crossed that this works for you!

I will definately look for those socks.

I never run in the shoes regular inserts but thats because I use the green Happy Feet inserts. I have friends that have destroyed their knees trying the same inserts. Each person is different.

hmm. I agree with Lisa, as long as you run once or twice in the shoes you should be fine.

Are you supposed to drain blisters? I thought not, but maybe that doesn't apply when they are on the bottom of your feet. Be careful with neosporin. Some people are allergic to it and that can prevent the wound from healing.
I am going to find my book when I get home from my run and check on that.

Speaking of blisters, has anyone else seen Run fatboy run? I have great visuals of Angie splitting her blister open.....

Cecilia - who should have already left for her run.....

Hey Goofs!

Lisa/Cecilia: I will be doing the VA beach 1/2 for the rest of my life!!:lmao: This will be the 3rd time I have run it, and my kids love the end of summer trip to the beach. I signed up after last year's for a discount, b/c I 'promised' the kids that we will go back. My dh has 3 hotels booked in anticipation! ((((((Which ever is the best deal and good locale))))) My dh and I celebrate our anniversary at the same time......Our anniversary is August 29th, so it is close to the trip every year!

I would love to run with both of you next year......it'll be fun!

So, for my totals:

Saturday:
4 hours (walking tour of Biltmore actually took longer!)
3 miles

Monday:
45 minutes
4 miles

Beth

Yay, Beth's in. Hey, I have a DD that will be 14 so maybe we can leave kiddos and do a super anniversary dinner out?? Mine is the end of July but, hey, I'm willing to postpone it for something this fun..I mean important.

Beth, I know this one sells out quickly so if they notify you every year when it opens, can you let Cecilia and I know? Anyone else???

I'm not draining them on purpose! I neo, bandaid, and tape...then run 'til I feel it split, then go home and clean it, soak it in epsom (stings, but feels good after), then re-neo and bandaid. I take the bandage off for sleeping, to get the air on it to dry it up, but? It's so big, that even just walking at work will split it if I dont have it gooped and taped.

Hey there Super Goofs! Yes, I know I have been MIA for awhile...work has really taken over recently, and on top of that I was SICK last week...UGH!!! I can't win! Got no workouts in last week, since I was sick.

This week, I am off of work and feeling MUCH better!!! On Saturday, I did four miles in 43 min.

Yesterday, I headed out for my first LR in a LONG.... time! ANd since I have a half marathon next week, I figured I better do something!! Yesterday's run went like this:

8 miles 1:31

The run went well, and I wasn't really that tired, so I think I will be all right for my half next week. Now, I won't be setting any PR's but I just want to finish!

lisa--that is cool that you are going to try to do a race in every state....well, I live in NJ and here are a few I can think of:

Spring Lake 5 miler---I know it is only 5 miles, but it is a GREAT race!!!
Long Branch Half/NJ Marathon---this is a nice race as well, I did the half last year, and I am doing it again next week.

And of course for NY, you should try to do the NYC marathon!

Angie--sorry to hear about your blisters...Cecilia mentioned about socks that prevent blisters. I used to get blisters alot when running and I went to Road Runner sports and bought these socks and they have helped so far. I haven't had any blisters since. I will let you know how it goes after my half marathon next week, but they are great!!

Maura--I agree with Lisa....stretching has helped me a ton with my hip and IT band issues. I also use 'the stick' before and after running, and although it hurts alot, it seems to help! Hope you are feeling better soon.

SOrry to anyone I missed, I will try to keep up more with this thread as much as I can.

Have a great day!

Laurie: Glad to see your smiling face back on the thread. Sorry you were sick. Thanks for the suggestions on the races. Every one goes on my list. I was thinking the MORE half marathon for NY as I really don't like the whole lottery system and too bad, so sad, maybe next year. Did I mention I am very plannerific and listy. These are my new words for the day. Hey, I transcribe docs for a living, they make up their own words all the time!!! Lynnie will back me up on that.

Angie: Try the blister bandages during the day as I think they may not cause the splitting with the cushion that they have built in. Plus, you don't have to goo up (eeeeewwwww) as the medicine is in the bandage too.
