Sunset Safari Questions **UPDATE: Post #19**

I trying to talk DH into doing this next year. Can't wait to hear how both of you like it. popcorn::

It was the single best thing we have ever done at Disney World!!! My only regret was that it wasn't longer.

I've seen a lot of great pictures posted from this safari, but I was wondering why no video? For those of you who have done this, do they prohibit video recording? If it is allowed, we would be more inclined to bring our video camera. It's about 7 years old so it isn't exactly small:lmao:. I could get a new one that is half the size and half the price:rotfl:.

When we did the Wanyama Safari, one of the guests was using a video camera the entire time.

Do you think concierge is worth the extra points? I'm trying to figure if we should try and book concierge for entire stay or just long enought to do the safari's. What does everything think?

what time is the sunset safari and how long does it last? Are you in the buses we had for the wildlife discovery?

It starts around 4 PM, and you are NOT in the buses. The truck is one of the open trucks you see the animal caretakers use. It has a cover so if it rains, you are covered. It only holds up to 20 people, so it is small. You sit on benches along the perimeter of the truck bed, but most of the time you want to stand, becaue you get REALLY close to the animals. I like that they tell little details about each individual animal as well as their names.

Is the cover retractable? We didn't have a cover on ours but maybe I just didn't see it.

The Wanyama was my least favorite of the safaris. We had 11 in our group and I think that's too many. My DH and DS1 were at the back and could stand most of the time. But the rest of us didn't as to do so blocked the view of the people facing you. And there wasn't room to swivel. So it was stand a bit, dodge around, etc.. I was disappointed.

I did enjoy hearing the names of each animal and details about their personalities.

The cover was on last year when we did this safari so I was surprised last week when there was no cover on the truck. It is removable, not retractable.

We had 13 on the safari plus the keeper and had no problem with the group being too large. We took turns standing and moving around so everyone could get the pictures they wanted.

That explains the cover. Perhaps there are even two different trucks used.

Were any of those children? Our safari was all adults.

Perhaps our group was overly polite but we spent most of the safari sitting. I do think everyone got as many pictures as they wanted. But having the seats face inward is a silly design IMO.

We did the Wanyama safari on a Wednesday night. There were a total of four people on our safari, all adults, so we could move all around the truck without anybody blocking anybody else. The keepers told us that the weekend safaris are more heavily booked so if you want to be part of a smaller group, try going on a weeknight.

It was a little awkward when we went into Jiko for dinner because it was just us and the other couple and they were very quiet. They were much younger than us and didn't seem too thrilled to be having dinner with total strangers. They relaxed a bit after a while (the wine probably helped!) and it worked out in the end.

so you eat with the safari group?

Does it require admission to the park?

Yes, after you leave the savannahs, the safari continues at Jiko.

No admission required as this safari takes place on the savannahs of AKL.

How much are the safaris? We would LOVE to do this!
Also are kids allowed? Ours will be 7 and 10 at the time of our next trip.

The dinner at Jiko's after the safari....... was it the same foods that are on the menu for the restaurant or was it something different then those??

Current cost is $160 if staying AKL/AKV-CL; $210 if staying AKL/AKV non-CL. Don't know if the 7 y/o would be allowed -- it's for ages 8 & up. :confused3

It's "family style" so your Safari group gets to sample many of their menu offerings.

So- does the group choose the foods, or does the chef?? And they areitems that are on the regular menu- right?

No....... I'm not following you! You're following me!!! :lmao: I've been secretly subscribed to this thread sincethe beginning, just haven't posted 'til now.

boa's on the safari?? Hadn't thought of that! I guess I'd be ok with that as long as they are feathered boas and not boa constrictors!

Are you planning on staying at AKV's???
