Hi all,

We'll be going "home to Disney" in 2 weeks time. My dd has a very light complexion and has eczema. I'm wondering if we can put sunscreen on her skin, and if so, what the best non-allergenic sunscreen is. Any help / ideas would be appreciated!

My son had infantile ezema also. Anything with a fragrance would make him break out, even shampoos. So, I used Aveno products (no fragrance, hypoallerginic) and kept the ezcema under control. He hardly ever had a break out. I don't remember putting sunscreen on him when he was younger, so I can't tell you a specific one. I think Aveeno makes one called "Aveeno Baby Sunblock". You can also do a google search for one. Also, make sure you bring lots of steroid cream in case he has a break out.

Oh, and whatever one you choose - test him before you leave to see how he reacts to it.HTH :goodvibes

Have Fun!!

I would ask your pediatrician. My DD does not have eczema, but does have sensitive skin. I have been very disappointed with sunscreens made for children over the last couple of years because they contain so many chemicals to get a higher SPF value, but this can be irritating - especially on faces. What I do sometimes is buy a sunscreen made for faces or even a facial moisturizer that contains a sunscreen. These tend to be a little more moisturizing but do provide sun protection.

My DD has had eczema since she was an infant and we have tried almost all of the sunscreen brands for kids out there. Her skin was so incredibly itchy and irritated by these that I was at my wit's end as to what to do! We finally had success with Vanicream. I order it through drugstore.com, but you can have your pharmacy order it for you.
I know you didn't ask, but if your having a problem getting her skin under control, you could try Stelatopia moisturizing cream and cleanser by Mustela. We have had great success with these products! We order through drugstore.com, also. We could not get DD off the steroids and this line of "dermo-pediatrics" products finally helped. We now only use the steroid creams during flare-ups, which happens so infrequently now, I wonder if she's outgrown the eczema. I don't want to stop using the cream to find out, though!

BAck in the day I used to work for Clinique. Although it probably more than you intended to spend there sun products are bay far the best. Dermatologist formulated,Fragrance free and Allergy tested. They used to have a sensitive skin formula. I have not looked at the products lately to know what the line is carrying now. There may also be a prescription formula that your pediatrician can recommend. I bottle should last a while for an infant if it only used for the infant. I have some children's clothing around that claims it is UV ray protectant.

Try Blue Lizard. They have sunscreen for babies and sensitive skin. It is the Onlysunscreen my daughter can wear that doesn't make her break out with a rash.

Another vote for Blue Lizard!! The stuff is amazing and REALLY waterproof. It doesn't contain all the nasty chemicals most of the other sunscreens contain and we have been using it for the past 3 years without one burn. My 6 yo has eczema and my 7 yo has REALLY sensitive skin and we have never had a problem. There are a few different formulas..baby, sensitive etc.
Also organic extra virgin coconut oil (Nutiva is the best brand imo) is a great moisturizer for eczema or any kind of skin.

Im a fan of Aveeno. It works fantastic and my kids have never had a problem with it. 2 of them have eczema. They also have Aveeno baby that i recently saw next to the regular aveeno.

Thank you for the replies, we live in The Netherlands. We often found that the products in the US are better then those in Dutch stores. The first day of our vacation is scheduled for shopping. I will make sure that the first thing on our shopping list is one of the sunscreens you listed!

Once again, thank you very much!

I have two young children with VERY sensative skin and lots of skin allergies. Clinique has never bothered either of them (the sunscreen is pretty expensive, but you gotta do what you gotta do) and the Aveeno baby is a good second choice. I usually love Aveeno products for them, but I think that the Clinique sunscreen is actually better at protecting their skin without causing flair-ups.

I hope you have a great trip!

We have a DD5 with excema and sensitive skin, and my husband has to be really careful as well. we have had success with neutrogena products.

I started searching for sunscreen last year when my 1 year old burned with an SPF 50 sunblock on - and it had been reapplied throughout the day. After reseraching, I tried Blue Lizard and it works great! He also has sensitive skin and he does not break out with it or even tan with it on. It is great stuff. You may have to order it online, but I was able to find it in my local Giant this year.

Also, check cosmeticdatabase.com. It has an area for sunscreen and it tells you how safe it is for your skin. Most of the readily available brands found in walmart or the grocery store aren't rated very well.

Our dermatologist suggested Neutrogena Sensitive Skin spf 30 because it's active ingredient is titanium dioxide. We have never had a problem in the 5 years we have used it with our daughter. I will have to look into the blue lizard stuff too.

We LOVE California Baby products. They are very highly rated with cosmeticdatabase.com and they agree with my son's sensitive skin (he has eczema too!)

I use the tube first thing in the morning before we leave the house and then carry the stick around all day so I don't have to worry about spills.

The only problem we have had with it was that it was hard to find in stores halfway through the summer so we had to order on line.

We use Blue Lizard for our DD who has very sensitive skin. It is a little expensive but it is worth every dollar!!! Here is the site that we have bought it from numerous times. http://www.coolibar.com

Another vote for Neutrogena!

My DD is quite a bit older but she's always had sensitive skin, and is prone to eczema. At the dermatologist recommendation, we tried the Neutrogena sunscreen. I don't rmember the exact name but it's sheer, non-sticky, light and waterproof. We usually buy the SPF 45 which works very well, but someone recently gave her the SPF 70 which was FANTASTIC.

DD uses it daily as we live in a year round hot climate.

My sister uses the Aveeno baby sunscreen on my 18 month old nephew - he's also prone to eczema, allergies etc. She swears that it is the only product he's used that didn't cause a rash.

I recommend the neutrogena sensitive skin spf 30. Don't forget to reapply every 4-6 hrs.

I totally agree. We use their sunscreen and their body/hair wash. I love that it doesn't have all the chemical junk in it that most other name brands do, plus it's safe for the little babies!
