Sunburns

Don't forget the ibuprofen for sunburn pain. I have 800 mg for the occassional headache, and used one for a slight burn I got in Hawaii. I had applies s/s, but was going on the slide A LOT, and it must've rubbed off...? The ibuprofen really helped. Over the counter is 200 mg. Taking 2 tabs (400 mg) should help enough to let you sleep. Takes about 45 min to kick in, and lasts 8 hours, so through the night. Hope that helps...
::yes::

I'm very fair skinned(in fact my mother has a mild sun allergy), and I've found that Coppertone Sport spf 50 works very well for prevention. I've also found it useful to apply sunscreen before I get dressed as that helps to avoid missing spots. Otherwise, aloe vera gel works best to help soothe the pain, especially when it's cold.

well im useing the wet cold rags now, seems like my shoulders are the worse and where my neck turns ty all i may try the vinger ty for that ides

When I was a kid, my aunt used the Noxema sunscreen on us. It worked wonders. It really helped with the pain, better than solarcaine.

My DS8 is allergic to some sunscreens (breaks out in huge hives). The one he DOESN'T react to is the Coppertone WaterBabies spf 50. So we all use that one. It doesn't help that DS is super fair skinned! He has avoided getting any really bad burns- only a couple times a little bit of redness. I buy the spray can kind, as it's quick and easy to spray on, especially when you're in line or outdoors. It is expensive though. I do find we're more likely to reapply every few hours if it is quick and easy to reapply. So, despite the cost, it's worth it to me to prevent sunburns in my kids. I do use the traditional kind where I slather it on when we are at the pool.

My first piece of advice would be to use lots of sunscreen. I like the continuous spray sunscreen because it's so easy to put on. I use SPF 45 Aveeno continuous spray. The important thing people forget is to REAPPLY. An SPF 45 sunscreen must be reapplied every 90 minutes or so. When we go to Disneyland in the summer, I try to stick to the 90 minutes or at most, 2 hours.

If you do happen to get burnt, aloe is great. You can also soak wash clothes in vinegar and put them on the burn. It smells horrible but helps pull out the heat do your skin feels a little better.

Sunscreen is key. Also, don't wear super thin clothes. If a shirt is too thin, you can actually burn through it. To test it, take it outside and hold it up in the sun. If you can see through it, you can burn through it.

As the mom of two Boy Scouts who are always outside doing something in any kind of weather... we've invested in the SPF lightweight shirts. They are available lots of places: REI, Cabelas, Joe's, Dick's made by REI, Columbia and Under Armour... They work great, they are lightweight and have venting - quick drying if they get wet. We all have the long sleeved shirts that can be rolled up and buttoned if it's just too hot. Not that it's been too hot in Western WA this year!!! ;(

We still use sunscreen underneath - but the shirts are great!

One DS has a horrible time with hives from Sunscreen - his Dr. told us they must have UVA and UVB protection to protect from skin cancer.

We use Aveeno and make sure to mark the bottles with the date of purchase! I never keep a bottle for over 6 months... used to just keep them around till they were empty but the Dr. says they have a shelf life.

Jade did you get burned on Sunday? I did, we went to DL on Sunday and I didn't do sunscreen....and I KNOW better!!!! I'm scary red right now, on my shoulders, neck and back. It hurts really bad up on my shoulders/neck but not too bad down my arms. In fact my arms are already turning a pretty brown, which totally shocks. I have the fair Irish skin in my family, dark brown hair w/red highlights and super fair skin. I usually fry, then peel and start all over again. DBF is calling me his lobsterific girlfriend. LOL I really am that red......

I use Coppertone spray on sun block for kids, we have 45 and 30 and I also use 70 if I'm going to be out for a long time. I just skipped it last time like a dummy. I have some after sun cream from Avon that I'm using right now, I like Aloe but it's sticky so I only use it when I'm home and can wear a tube top, I don't wear those to work and we have dog training tonight so tube tops are a bad idea. LOL So at work I use the Avon stuff and then after work I put on a tube top and use Aloe. I can't use it straight from the plant though, it burns and stings way too much.

At night I use a super soft blanket and wrap it around my shoulders, it's much easier to sleep when the covers are soft. :) I try not to take too much medication for things like this, especially when it was my fault and easily avoidable. :)

My Uncle does the vinegar thing, he swears by it and he's a red headed Viking guy! LOL We used Noxzema when I was a kid.....I loved it, I was thinking of getting it tonight but it tends to dry my skin out so I can't use it too much.

Jade, feel better soon!!
