Sun, Shopping, Sand, Surf, Sweat & Shamu: A Splashin Summertime Sabbatical at SVR!

Our first night in Orlando was in a hotel right next (Four Points) to that mini golf. I was thinking we would go there, but my husband wasn't to enthused to go there, which typically he likes to take the kids mini golfing. We had time, but instead we went and checked into the Sheraton Vistana Villages. We were also lucky to get checked in early and then left for Sea World. Sure wish we would have went mini golfing first!

Yay, Typhoon Lagoon up next. That is a favorite park with us. We had a great day there too.

We have a Chili's here, but the 2 times we ate there, nothing to write home about and and have never gone there again.

We like the Gator golf too. My kiss like feeding those gators too.

Gator Golf looks like a lot of fun!! I bet my kids would get a kick out of it! We were thinking of doing the City Walk mini golf at Universal, but I find it kind of expensive and we've done both sides. Maybe Gator Golf would be a better idea:).

You can tell how hot it is looking at your pictures! Jakes tired out/overheated pic from dinner looks like ALL of our photos from our first September Disney trip. I remember the first time we saw those pictures and laughing because our entire family is pink in every picture. We weren't sunburnt, just stinking HOT!

Yay for putt putt! Especially Congo River; that's a favorite for me as well!

Steve's steak looks delicious!! I would eat that right now!

ooooh typhoon lagoon?? That is a maybe for us this trip; can't wait to read about it!!!

Thanks for the timeshare info, I have some research to do! :good vibes

Dicks looks like fun, and yummy too!

Congo River, I will have to remember that. It looks like it could be a full morning. We rarely mini golf, but the kids do enjoy it.

Were you on I-Drive, VacaPlanner0425? I think I know the Four Points that you are talking about.....and that's actually next to a different Congo River location. We were at the Kissimmee course, but we have golfed the I-Drive one on a previous trip and loved it, too :thumbsup2 . You can't go wrong with Congo River (any location....I think there are 6 in the Orlando/Central Florida region).

How did you like the Vistana Villages? I would love to hear about your experience there!! (if you have an pics you would be willing to share, I'd love to see those too!)

We had perfect weather on this trip for waterparking, didn't we? Sunny, HOT, and rain-free :thumbsup2 . We had said we were on a pilgrimage to find summer....and we certainly did just that!

Just to clarify (in case you are doing a little pre-trip research), the course that is shown in the above post was Congo River. There is, in fact, a "Gator Golf" on International Drive (we have golfed there on a previous trip, too.....good course, but not as "polished" and themed as the Congo River chain) so I just didn't one anyone to be confused!! I think all of the Congo locations also have the resident gators that you can hold and feed (both the I-Drive and Kissimmee locations have them, at the very least) and then there are other things to do that are location-specific: the Kissimmee course also has paddle boats and gemstone mining, while the I-Drive one has the mining and an elaborate basketball hoop area.

We did the mini golf at Universal on this trip too (the Hauntings at Ghostly Greens side) and really enjoyed it. We had our golf passes through the meal and mini golf deal ($22 for golf and dinner at Nascar) which was a great value, but at $14.99 pp for golf only, you are right....its the priciest golf option in Orlando. Fun, well-themed course, though ::yes:: . I would love to go back again and do the Alien side......but again, I'd probably buy the meal deal to help get my money's worth!

Steve gave top marks to that steak. He enjoyed a good slab of beef several times on our trip, and said Chili's did it best :) . Of course, that boy rarely meets a steak he doesn't like :rotfl: so perhaps he's not overly objective.

If the weather co-operates and you have the time to give Typhoon Lagoon a try, its well worth a visit :thumbsup2 . Its a FUN park, and so lush and pretty. While Aquatica is our favourite Orlando water park, TL comes in a close second. Their wave pool is simply awesome!

You know, mini golf is one of those things that I never was overly inclined to do, but since Jake and Steve got bitten by the bug, its kind of grown on me, too :goodvibes . I must admit, it was nice having Sweetie along this trip, because for once I wasn't the one always coming in last!! :rotfl2:

Yay, I love Typhoon Lagoon. :) We have Disney annual passes and upgraded to the premium level so we could go to the water parks, too. We've gone more than 5 times this summer and it's soooooo worth it. In the summer we only go to the parks for Star Wars Weekends and when my husband's family visits, and the water parks are such a nice respite from the hot, hot days. Especially since it's such a short drive and they let you bring in food (two of the reasons we haven't visited Aquatica yet, sigh).

Aaaaaanyway, Gina, if you have any questions about moving to the area, I'll be glad to help. :) Florida is great, if you can get used to the heat. You came at such a great time. It's been soooooooo rainy this summer. Usually the storms come and go, but there's been so many days where it just starts storming and doesn't stop all night. Not very fun.

Edit: Also, if you do eventually move to the area, you might find yourself visiting Disney way more than you used to. Going as a local is way more fun--it's cheaper, you don't have to plan way in advance, you don't have to be cramped into small rooms, you can leave whenever you want, you can participate in all the fun events--yeah, I love it. :) All the Florida resident passes for all the parks are pretty reasonable, and then, of course, there's the cruise discounts! :)

Sorry, I am the unofficial Florida welcome wagon. :)

Yes - we were on I-Drive. I have pictures of the mini golf from our room (we were on the 16th floor). I was hoping we were going to go there since we had time, but didn't.

I liked the Vistana Villages. It was really close to Sea World. I will add some pictures when I am at home (not as good as yours because it was a last second thought with all our junk around!). We stayed where you were last year. They are very similar.

My only question is.....how can I get a green card?!? :rotfl:

When we were at Wawa getting Tastykakes (on the awesome suggestion of Lynne G) we saw that they were looking to hire a manager for that particular location. Its all Steve has talked about since we have come home  . I assure you that if he had a valid US work Visa, he'd have been dropping off a resume before those Tastykakes had hit the bottom of his stomach.

The heat wouldn't bother me in the slightest.....I can tolerate a LOT of heat, even that of Florida. Its the cold that drives me bonkers. I'll take 95 degrees with humidity over -25 with ice and snow any day.

I love your enthusiam about the area, Nancy. It just fuels my ambition to make Florida home some day. If I were lucky enough to set up camp there on a permanent basis, you can bet your boots I'd be singing the praises of Orlando to anyone who would listen!!! :thumbsup2

Glad to hear!! We drove by several time during our stay, and marvelled at how convenient it would be for a SeaWorld stay. The drive to the parks would be so quick!

Tuesday, August 19th :).

Fate (and a dose of good luck!) had blessed us with yet another sunshiny, hot, and simply gorgeous summer day, making the claim of “it rains every day in August” almost hard for us visitors to believe. We hadn’t seen so much of a drop of precipitation since our arrival on Sunday morning (and even then, the sun was out!). Someone clearly forgot to tell Mother Nature that she was supposed to serve up a good storm every afternoon. That said, we certainly weren’t complaining! :worship:

I roused the troops reasonably early, so we could all catch a quick breakfast at the villa before leaving for our day’s destination. We kept it simple and easy, grabbing coffee (I was lovin’ me some Timmies perked fresh and hot!), muffins, homemade smoothies (whipped up by Sweetie), yogurt, and left-over pizza. By about 8:30 am (and right on schedule!) we were passing underneath these magical gates:

See that sky? Not a cloud!!

Today’s plan was to spend the day splishing and splashing in the lush, tropical beauty of Typhoon Lagoon. Our water park AP’s were still active from last year’s trip, so the only admission cost we had for this day was for Sweetie.

We parked the car, zipped through bag check and the ticketing turnstiles, and immediately lined up to purchase a reserved space….the loungers and umbrella….in Getaway Glen. Arriving just before park opening, and it being a mid-week day, we figured we’d have no problem securing a lounger rental on the day-of. Imagine our surprise when we hear the CM telling the folks in front of us “yes, we’re almost sold out”. Oh oh :scared1:! Thankfully, we were literally just in time, capturing the third last lounger/umbrella rental that remained available. Good thing we weren’t five minutes later in leaving the villa.

We tossed our important stuff (phones, purses, etc.) in a locker then went to set up camp at our lounger.

A thorough sun screening of our lily white bodies came next…..we did not care to repeat the sunburns of 2013. We recharged our refillable mug from last year’s visit, and purchased a second mug as well (Steve and I would share the original mug, while Jake and Sweetie shared mug #2......which we sent home with her after her trip as a souvenir of our Disney waterpark day). Everyone took a hydration break (Mom’s orders) then we were off and running.

I had decided before this visit that I was going to put on my big-girl panties and try something a little out of my comfort zone. Most of you know I’m a ride chicken….anything wilder than the lazy river and it’s usually something I will take a pass on. I don’t generally prefer being shaken, tossed, or otherwise moved around at any rapid rate of speed. However, I had watched some Youtube videos of the family raft ride, Gangplank Falls, and thought I could probably handle it without losing my lunch (or in this case, my breakfast ). Amazed at the fact I was actually willing to try a slide, even the kids opted to come along, so the whole four of us headed there first.

I swear my legs shook as I waited in the queue. This was big for me. Very big. And you know what? I loved it :woohoo:. Jake joked that the rest of them fell asleep during the ride, and I know it was way, way under their speed, but I enjoyed it enough that Steve and I went the second time while the kiddos took off to do their own thing for the next while (one of the nice things about having older kids). Jake and Sweetie wanted to hit every slide (after all, it was Sweetie’s first visit….the whole park was a fresh, new experience for her) while Steve and I were more geared toward a relaxing, slower-paced day in the sun (and the water…..it was gettin’ steamy….really steamy! What a great day for a water park! ::yes::).

The rest of the morning we ran into the kids coming or going to the loungers, as they took a brief break between slides for drinks and more sunscreen. Steve and I mostly rotated between the lazy river, the wave pool (I have said it before but I will say it again…..I *love* that wave pool!) and stretched out on the loungers. Ah, life was good.

Eventually our tummies began to signal that it was time to refuel. Apparently the kids’ nutritional clocks were running on the same rotation as ours, because just as we mentioned that we were feeling rather peckish, Mickey & Minnie showed up at the loungers declaring that their hunger had kicked in, too. It was time for lunch…..and for me to eat my words (pardon the pun :rotfl2:). For those that might have read my previous trip report (and even the pre-trip portion of this report), you’ll know I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the food we had here on our 2013 trip. This time, I was about to be happily surprised.

By about 8:30 am (and right on schedule!) we were passing underneath these magical gates:

See that traffic? Holy cow! I don't think I've ever seen that many cars early mornings on March break!

Actually, it is certainly time to head back for us. My first thought when I saw this was "what the heck are they doing at the Disney sign, driving to TL". My minds eye has that sign placed much further up Epcot Centre Drive for some reason. Had to google map it for a refresher. Now I just want to head down there now for a REAL refresher!

Our family favorite is the Crush 'n Gusher - we have to ride all 3 slides at least once! If crowds are low, we just keep going again and again! I also like the Storm Slides but had an unfortunate incident there a few years ago. For some reason the guy in front of me stopped about halfway down; I like racing with the kids (with my body mass, I always win!). Unfortunately when a rapidly moving mass hits a stationary object, the results can be "unpleasant". I laugh about it now; the look on the other guys face just before the collision was priceless!

Did you do the two right turns out of SVR? Is that the best way to TL?

Man, it looks like getting your own lounging area is a great idea - look at all those people! I don't know how you'd find your stuff again! Or you'd have to have a locker, I think. Were the bees very bad when you were there? Is it very expensive to get a rental lounger there?

Congrats on the big girl ride! :)

lol, having visited during Christmas week before....this was nothin'. :rotfl:

Honestly, I think the heat had everyone up and early while the temps were still tolerable. But that's just my guess.

Yep, 2 rights out of SVR will get you there :thumbsup2 (or I'm pretty sure of that, anyway....lol, I never do any of the driving :drive: ).

Bees weren't bad at all. The odd one, but nothing problematic.

Getaway Glen reserved space rentals are really quite reasonable...about $55 with tax, and that gets you the 2 loungers, 2 small chairs, the little table and the umbrella. Worth every penny, IMHO :beach:.

Tuesday, August 19th…..continued!

While Steve and I were returning from our second round on Gangplank Falls, a section of the menu at Lowtide Lou’s caught our eye. Waffle sandwiches? Now that sounded different. And yummy.

So when it came time to decide on what to have for lunch, we knew what we wanted.

Jake and Sweetie opted for the old standbys from Typhoon Tilly’s. So they went one direction with money in hand in search of vittles while we embarked on a waffle expedition. Meeting back at the dining area next to Getaway Glen, they had this tray of food (or what was left of it :rotfl:):

And here was our magnificent display:

I have to say……these waffle sandwiches were awesome :thumbsup2. Steve had the chicken and waffle sandwich, while I opted for the fruit and waffle version (in mine, the waffle was chocolate chip……….warm and gooey and so good!). Now, the ordering process was a bit marred by the older lady who pitched a fit (full out tantrum….no kidding :rolleyes2 ) when she deemed the wait for her lunch too lengthy. Things got a bit nasty (yoo hoo? Where did the magic go?!? :upsidedow) and we high-tailed it out of there while the CM was still trying to settle Ms. Unruly down. I can only assume that woman musta been some hungry to get that upset over a few minutes wait :scratchin.

With lunch devoured (and my opinion of Disney water park food sufficiently altered....the Mouse has renewed my faith in their dining options!), we went back to enjoying all the amenities of the park. We did see Lilo and Stitch out for photos a few times, but Sweetie’s fear of costumed characters kept her and Jake at a safe distance. Much as I would have enjoyed a photo with either of the two, the big guy and I would have looked a bit silly standing in line with the assortment of 3 to 10 year olds so we decided to take a pass. No worries, more time in the wave pool! :cool1: ...........

………..and the lazy river! :cheer2:

Mid afternoon, the kiddos were hungry (again) so we had a snack break. I gave them carte blanche to pick whatever item they wanted, and not surprisingly they made a beeline for the Dippin Dots stand.

After the success of the waffle sandwiches, Steve and I opted to continue our walk on the wild side and try one of the much-celebrated but not-yet-tried items at the waterpark which I have heard many Dis-ers rave about: the mini donuts.

Oh my. So good. ::yes::

These treats don’t have any calories when consumed on vacation, right? If they do…..I’m in trouble.

More swimming, more sunning ensued….but by about 3:30, we were done. The kids had done every slide (many multiple times), and Steve and I has been tossed around for hours in the wave pool (and only sustained one serious kick to the forehead from another flailing guest :scared:).

It was time to pack up our stuff, turn in our locker key, and drag our weary selves back to the villa for a nap. This old girl was plumb tuckered out.

Funny, that's what we ate at Tilly's too. And, the donuts were an afternoon snack for us, we liked them the last time, and they were good this time as well. DS had to go to Leaning Palms for some fish and chips. Ahh, we cannot get away from fast food grease.

We also didn't think the bees were that bad nor were the birds. One egret was giving us the sad eyes when we were eating, but did not try to take anything off our plate. Dumb people next to us then starting feeding it, so it never gave us anymore attention. I was so worried, as I've had greedy seagulls and other birds in other parks steal food right from your hand or plate.

We also went on a week day, and were done by 4pm. I like the snorkeling and the slides. My DD and I went on the Crusher Gusher more than a dozen times. I don't like roller coasters, but those slides are fun.

We bought shampoo and body wash with us. Changed and went to DTD. Kids did DQ and we ate at Earl's. That was a hike to get from Earl's from DQ. So much construction.

Your vacation pics have been so awesome. I find myself checking in twice a day for more.

Those waffle sandwiches look awesome!! I heard they sell them at Sleepy Hollow in the MK too, so I think we'll give them a try on this upcoming trip!
Oh how I miss Typhoon Lagoon! We just don't bother with the waterparks on winter trips. We're lucky if we get in the pool a few times. It's the one thing I miss most about our summer trips..swimming. Plus the boys in our family LOVE a good waterpark.

Thank you for clearing up the golf names! I was confused. I mean there were so many gators.. it had to be gator golf. Silly me.:rotfl:

Ugh...it drives me NUTS when people feed those dang birds :furious: . We saw folks tossing them food at TL, and I just had to wonder....why???? It just makes them more aggressive than they already are. So silly.

We drove past DTD this trip on a couple of occasions, but the traffic was so congested and the construction such a mess, we didn't even bother to stop. Hopefully, by the time the next trip rolls around, it will be starting to take shape again.

Your vacation pics have been so awesome. I find myself checking in twice a day for more.

Thanks tristy! I always think that photos really help to tell the story. Lots more to come. Thanks for sticking around and continuing to read :) .

Your trip is sure racing up quickly! You must be so excited!

lol, good Canucks that we are, we swim regardless of the weather. We even went to Aquatica on Christmas Eve in 2012......our trio was one of about 30 people in the whole darn park :rotfl: . The other 27 were also most likely Canadians, or perhaps a family or two from Wisconsin or Minnesota. We're hearty enough that we could chip the ice off the water and jump in :rotfl2: .
