Sun screen?

Does any one know if you can take sun screen in a carry on? Or is it considered a liquid and not allowed?

Thanks:)

Anything that does not hold its shape outside of a container, such as sun screen, is considered a liquid and is subject to the 3-1-1 restrictions. You could take a 3.4oz (100 ml) container of sunscreen as a liquid in your 1 quart bag. You can put as many containers as will fit in a closed 1 quart bag, and every ticketed passenger is entitled to one bag.

AT MCO, the announcement states 3 oz., which is in direct conflict with the 3.50 ounce rule. It also has to be exactly a one quart ZIP lock (type) bag.

There's no 3.50 ounce rule. And MCO can't have it own 3 oz rule.

The TSA 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons is:
  • 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume)
  • 1 quart-sized, clear plastic, zip-top bag
  • 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin

Thanks for the replies, I guess I will be spending some money to buy it at Disney. So now here's another question- Does anyone know how much a can/bottle is in the gift shops?

Thanks Again

Are you only doing carry-on then? Because you can have full size bottles in your checked luggage.

Gift shop prices are about 40% higher than street, so I make it a point to buy ahead. Several mfrs are now selling sunscreen in 3 oz tubes; you can put several in 3-1-1 baggies for a family. If you use a stick product for your face, that does not count; you can carry sunscreen sticks anywhere. Cans are always too large for carryon.

You can put all the sunscreen you need in checked baggage, but if you are trying to avoid the cost of a checked bag, you might consider ordering some from somewhere like Drugstore.com or Amazon and having it shipped to your resort. Do the math and figure out what is most cost-effective and convenient for you.

BTW, if you have REALLY fair skin or are on meds that make sun exposure problematic, it is possible to get a scrip from a dermatologist for certain types of sunblock. TSA defines sunblock as a toiletry rather than a medication, so if you have a scrip for OTC sunblock, tape a copy of the scrip to the bottle, and send it through the checkpoint in a bag marked "Medication." (For liquid meds, any size bag is OK, and while technically you don't have to mark the bag, IME it makes your time with TSA go much more smoothly if you do.) Normally, meds of any sort do not require a scrip to be attached to get it though the checkpoint, but sunblock is a special case; if it is not small enough to go in a 3-1-1 baggie, it won't get through without proof of a scrip, because TSA rules do not consider it a "legitimate" medication unless you have a scrip for it.

Sorry, but it's 3.4 or 100ml. It's 3.4 simply to make it equal to that 100ml, since the majority of the world is on metric!
I have had plenty of things in my qt sized baggie that are 3.4oz when going through security at MCO. They can't make their own rules!!!

Why? I'd you have checked luggage get a big ziptop bag, toss in a full size bottle or two. Decant some into a 3.4 oz container and put it in your 311 bag for your carryon so you have some just in case.

I bought labeled 3.4 oz containers (from Safeway if you have that store in your area) and empty a whole bottle into a few of those. Put one in each 311 bag and we have a lot of sunscreen ready to go.

You might be surprised at how much 3.4 oz actually is!

I don't know what Disney charges, but it's expensive and you're unlikely to get the brand and SPF rating that you want.

It's easy to buy size-compliant sunscreen and sunblock products at Target, Costco, and other discount stores. For example, the normal size for Neutrogena sunscreen products is 3.0 oz (88 ml). Coppertone and other brands also offer 3.0 oz containers, although there are also larger containers.

Normally, I don't bother with a 3-1-1 bag. I just put my toothpaste, shampoo, and other toiletries into my checked bag. However, if I'm landing at Orlando early enough to put me into a Disney park while the sun is still high in the sky, I would want sunblock in my carry-on bag. Then the Magical Express service can deliver our bags to the room while we're out having fun -- protected from UV rays.

I know they cannot make their own rules, I was commenting on the announcement that airs there. Sorry about the 3.5 part, I swear it used to be that or CRS has hit me.

I was merely commenting on the announcement that airs at MCO. I am aware they cannot make up their own rules. As to the 3.5 comment, I swear it used to be 3.5 or...........CRS has caught up with me.

I found these small spray suntan lotion in the travel section on Target. These are small enough to fit in the 3-1-1 bag.

Many regular bottles of sunscreen and sunblock are also within the 3.4 oz. limit, typically 3.0 oz.

It's not necessary to look only in the travel section.

If one
accepts that Airport Security Screeners are inconsistent, then it seems like each airport, shift and screener make up their own rules.

A lot. I think the last time I had to purchase some (we ran out in the World Showcase) it was around $16 a bottle.

Thanks again for all you responses. I should have stated that I won't be checking any bags. However I am excited to hear I should be able to find sun screen in smaller containers. There are four of us traveling so I can just buy ahead and place some in each carry on. :cool1:

Thanks I will be checking into this the next time I am at Target. I am traveling with my sons and the spray is just easier to use for me.

Hope it is a short trip. An avg amount of sunscreen per application should be 1 oz. probably need at least one small size per person per day.
