sun cream reccomendations ??

normally we holiday in the med so i was wondering what suncream and factor to take for my 2 kiddies 13 and 9

both of them do burn though dd 13 does go brown eventually

i know that me and dh will go for a minimum of factor 30

i was just wondering if anyone had any firm favourites and tips on factor to use

Boots own brand the once a day. Factors 30 down to 8. And a 50 for kids.

I get the once stuff as I detest the sun cream ritual

ultrasun once a day (although I confess on a very hot day to applying it to my kids twice after both me and Mum had a skin cancer scare)

Even my dd who has very sensitive skin and is intolerent to most skin care ranges can use the family sensitive spf30 in their range.

Highest factor you can get for everyone. I don't see the point in having a lower factor just because you are adult - whether you usually burn or go brown. It's to protect against skin cancer not just to stop burning

I always go for boots soltan range, it helps with anti ageing and I think most of the range is 5 star protection. Which ever brand you choose makesure it has the five star rating on the back.

sweat-proof (heat of the day)

I'm a red-head so burning is what I do - we went this last August - water parks 3 times - I didn't burn at all -- just had store brand 45 proof in the sport (wal-mart & grocery store) I do like to get the little clip on bottle (refill with a bigger bottle) & keep that with me while at the parks - I do the binki just so I can clip that on the bottoms so I don't have to stop go find our chairs to reply (hubby will always say let's ride this while we are here, then the next then the next - so it is best to have with you at all times)

Totally agree, the Florida sun is incredibly strong and you should use the highest factor to protect you, we use factor 50 from Boots.

I get factor 50 in the nivea baby range for dd so just use this on us, and use a sweat proof one for faces from hawaian tropic as oh hates it when the cream drips in his eyes. I think provided you use a high factor that has a good star rating then you will be fine, also replace them every year as they expire an won't be as effective as they should be so I always buy new bottles every year.

I have been using this one [Parasol Kids 25+] can be difficult to get, but they sell it at the airports and online.
Cannot recommend it enough, have been using it for 10 years on DD and myself, and never had any problems with it, and have recommended it to lots of friends , for their children especially, and they all raved about it when they came back from holiday.
Its a 0nce a day and water resistant, although i would always put a 2nd lot on at lunchtime if we are spending all day at the pool.
Why change something if it works, and having sunburn is the worst thing that could happen when on holiday, so do not mind paying that bit extra for peace of mind

i think we will go with soltan - its buy one get one free at the moment and i havent seen any other creams in the shops yet that do higher than 30 for adults

i went to mexico 3 years ago and brought my cream in the hotel shop as i completely forgot to pack some and out there they had factor 75 by banana boat !

it was a spray and i used that for the kids and factor 50 for us but havent found that high a factor here yet

I used the Boots once a day in August 2009 and had no problems with burning (we're all fair skinned.)

However I did I have problems with the cream staining my T-shirts around the neckline.

the florida sun is a total killer...
you get burned in the blink of an eye....and when you're not really thinking about it...just walking around the outdoor outlet malls you can get massively burned.....in just a few minutes..

the florida sun is definitely not something to take lightly!!!

i like piz buin....but any good brand with decent suncreen factor will work...

Factor 30 or 50 (there's only about a 1% difference in protection between them) with 5 star UVA protection. I never, ever burn - olive skin - but I don't want cancer.

Also, I don't want to subject my skin to the premature aging effects of the sun (I'm nearing my late twenties and I'm constantly mistaken for an 18 year old thanks to my hiding from the sun and daily use of sunscreen on my face). It's my personal opinion that most caucasians look, uh, 'not good' with a tan anyway...

There's no such thing as a truly waterproof sunscreen. 'Water resistant' will wash off within 40 minutes and 'water proof' will last up to 80 minutes in water. And you need about a shot glass full of the stuff for full body coverage (most people seriously under apply).

All brands have to meet the same standards in the EU, so a Tesco sunscreen of factor 50 with 5 star UVA protection gives exactly the same protection as Garnier factor 50, 5 star UVA sunscreen. It's really just about finding one with a texture/scent you like that sinks in well.

All cosmetics (in the EU at least) have a small image on the packaging that indicates how many months (usually) the product is good for after opening.

It was great because it was a spray, and went on completely clear. So not much rubbing, which is good because I hate the whole cream deal

I'm gonna get some more when I'm out there this summer, but to start off and to tie me over until I can get some, I'm taking some Banana Boat clear sun spray. That's great stuff too! I think it's the sport type...

Anything that is "waterproof" and doesn't need much rubbing in is a winner in my book

That's because EU regulations forbid cosmetic companies from claiming anything higher than factor 50 (I think). To be honest though the difference would be negligible (protection doesn't increase linearly with spf number).

We're pretty lucky in the EU though. Europe is where most sunscreens are first formulated and tested. We get our sunscreens about 20 years ahead of the US (due to FDA regulations over there), so we always have the newest, best sunscreens.

and you're pretty fair skinned....maybe you're careful to stay in the shade...

DS is a burner....he has two skin tones....red and white...
he's very very white and after about half a second in the sun, he's flaming red......
he cannot tan, no matter what he does....

We are just back and discovered Coppertone spray while we were there.

We have used allsorts over the years, ultrasun when the girls were small, boots own, tesco own and we took piz buin with us this time. However Coppertone was SO easy to apply. A simple spray that does not need rubbing in, fab. Available in many spf's from 15 up to 70.....
