He started therapy about 4 years ago when he was caught at work going on an overnight school trip (he's a music director) under the influence. It was either therapy or be fired. He was diagnosed as an alcoholic due to depression. He has been talking about this for much longer than his brother's death, so it's definitely not a guilt thing.
I agree too with the above posters, it sounds like he was obviously forced to go which is different than recognizing the need to go. Maybe he feels like he deserves to die because he has or had an alcohol problem. And with his brother's death, feels as if it's even more a possibility? I've heard of men who have felt that way due to drinking. Do you feel therapy has helped? Is it possible for you to join his therapy session? It's really hard to say from our end on the disboards because as Imzadi said, we don't know all the variables. I hope you can work through this. Good luck.
