OK - Here we go. We just had to cancel a trip to WDW for this December. I used the points for another reservation at the Hilton Head resort in May. I figure we can have a relaxing vacation and then do WDW next December.... Any suggestions on what to do?
It would be me and hubby, our kids who are now 4 and 16 months and possibly my parents.
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks!

Tanya

Some suggestions:

1 - just enjoy the DVC resort and beach house. There will be lots of activities for a 4 year old, with an adult along.

2 - adults and possibly 4 year old - go on some of the nature tours scheduled at DVC. Dolphin tour, nature preserves, etc are great.

3 - look at the shops on and just off the island.

4 - Drive the ~25 miles to Savannah for a day trip. It's really a very nice thing to do.

5 - Take an afternoon and drive to historic Beaufort and look at the shops.

We love Hilton Head. It's much more relaxing and laid back than the Orlando resorts.

you will have a great time. I have a 15 mo old and the past 2 times we went, we did not have any plans. we only went to the pool, beach, and out ot eat. It was a great time. So you can plan and do nothing but "beach bum" and it will be a great time.

Have fun.

The best itinerary for DHHIR is NO itinerary, IMHO! The resort and the whole island should not be real crowded at that time of the year (spring break already over; summer vacation not started yet). Anything you want to do -- including getting golf tee times -- can probably be done on the spur of the moment.

When you get there, pick up some of the activity booklets and restaurant guides that are free all over the place (the front desk of the resort sometimes has them, too!) and see what looks interesting. Then do it -- or don't -- as the mood strikes you! ;)

We will be there (again) in late May.

We will probably

EAt breakfast, go to the beach and then go out for supper.
Repeat daily.

Intersperse some bike riding and maybe a fishing trip or kayak ride.

No itinerary needed -- or wanted.

We go to Hilton Head every year as that's our favorite DVC resort and one of our "homes". You don't really need an itinerary---just plan to relax and enjoy the beach and island. A trip to Harbortown for part of a day would be fun for everyone as would a stop at South Beach. Even your 16 month old can go on a dolphin cruise. Captain Scott and his crew are wonderful. If your parents join you, you might want to reserve a special night out for you and your hubby----A Private Affair with Chef Gordon would be a wonderful option.

This past summer we took our grown daughters, their spouses and our 5 grandchildren ages 5 years to 9 months to HH for a week in a Grand Villa. All are ready to return anytime.

I guess most of you are right.... Don't really plan... Just hang out on the beach, go to restaurants, etc.

Thank you!.... We should have a great time either way.

You can rent bikes for the week from any number of rental agencies. They will deliver to our door, along with bike seats or a tag a long bike for the older child, or a cart to pull both behind one bike. Coligney Plaza is a great shopping area in S. Forest Beach. There are restaurants, ice cream a nice toy store and children's boutique. HH Brewing Company has great food and you can get a table by the window and the kids will love to watch the ducks. On Sunday night they have children's activities on their outside deck. Go early. Make sure you go into Sea Pines to see the singer/entertainer by the giant oak tree at Harbour Town...what a special event!

Some more ideas:

Take some red cellophane, cover a flashlight with that and a rubber band and walk on the beach at night and look for sea turtles laying eggs. Walk up to the top of the lighthouse at Harbourtown.

One note....take the alligator situation very seriously! I have seen huge alligators run onto the banks and grab pets. Do not let your children anywhere near the ponds that are all over the island....stay on the miles of paved bike/jogging paths.

Vandermeer is a great place for some tennis lessons.

Most of the island is gated into various plantations. If you go to the gate without a reason, you can't enter. Have a destination in mind...a specific hotel or restaurant that you want to visit, then they will let you in. The exception is Sea Pines, which will allow anyone to enter, but they charge about $5 for a daily pass and specify the streets you are to stay on.
