Our neighbors recently built their own deck and our house sits a little higher than theirs so from our deck you can see right over to them and vice versa. With summer fastly approaching, I want to enjoy some privacy on our deck without having our neighbors RIGHT there.

I've seen some beautiful wooden outdoor privacy walls on pinterest. The only problem is I cannot find any instructions on how to build something like that. I am going to shop at Lowes and Home Depot to see if I can just find something that's already put together to buy, but I want something that is at least 6 feet tall. I'm not averse to building something as long as it's not too incredibly complicated. I was thinking of using pallets and staining them and somehow creating a wall out of them, but I need some detailed, step-by-step instructions, lol

Does anyone have something like this in their yard?

I'm not sure if this link will work, but here is what I'm thinking - https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/01/48/0d/01480d0f1cb7853676d6702e7dca0335.jpg

You're going about this all wrong.

First, go out and buy a cheap telescope.
Next, mount it on the railing of your deck aiming it right at their deck.
After this, watch them build a privacy fence.
Finally, remove telescope from railing.

Lol, the problem is that even a privacy fence will not block our vision to their deck and theirs to ours. And we are actually going to put up our own privacy fence this summer anyway but a 6 ft tall fence isn't high enough. The privacy fence will hopefully stop our dogs from maniacally barking their heads off whenever our neighbor is walking her dog on the leash through her backyard and behind the wooded area of our houses....I just love having neighbors :sad2:

Not a quick solution, but we have arborvidae (not sure on the spelling) between our yard and the neighbors. They've grown up huge in the last few years, tall, and they're great for privacy!

We needed privacy from our neighbors too. We installed a pool and wanted privacy. Landscaping was ok for a while, but we wanted something more.

We wound up installing a removable bamboo fence along the pool fence on the side that is adjacent to their property. This is the company we purchased from and the look is very similar to what is now on that side of our pool...calibamboo.com

I would put up lattice panels along the side of the deck. Plant some ivy or flowering vines that will climb up the wall and give you additional privacy. You can research this type of plants, some are fast growing and will fill in within one season. Or put hanging plants at the top and have them hang down. You could also use fake ivy.

You could get one of those four panel screens from Lowes. There are also wicker ones at various places.

Kevin Bacon invented a privacy solution. You have to go into a scientific lab and get an injection but if you watch Hollow Man, you'll get an idea of what needs to be done.

Yep. This. We waited the neighbors out and they planted bushes. It took few years, but it does a much better job than any privacy fence.

(Doesn't stop the dogs. I've decided my neighbors yard is just the doggy equivalent of soap operas or, heck, disboards!)

May I recommend Graham Blandy (boxwood) instead of Arborvitae if your space is limited. Arborvitaes get HUGE!

Graham Blandy is NOT cheap but they do not get bagworms if that is an issue.

Hops grow really quickly every year and will climb on anything. You can usually find a fairly good deal on native varieties of the plants (as opposed to varietals grown for brewing), or get cuttings from someone who grows them. They are interesting to see and are fragrant in an earthy way. Our neighbor put up a wire enclosure to keep his dog and chickens in their yard and has planted hops along the fence. We NEVER see the wire fence, just a nice, tall hops-hedge!

Interesting. Had to check it out. If you want the seeds you have to plant a couple of males in with the female plants. Also it is listed as a native MO plant. My sister could use this plant. Now I will have to track it down. Thanks.

If you want something FUN plant "Moonflower". The flowers are fragrant and only open at night.

I wouldn't use pallets, you're not likely to be satisfied with the resukt.

It looks like you need some 4x4s for the posts, right feet high and one every four feet. Then for the actual privacy, some 1x4s. Twenty four for an 8x8 screen. Now that only accounts for the screen itself. If you need to have the base of the sports in the ground, you'll need 12 foot posts. You'll also need footings - either concrete fo inground, or metal joists if you're adding to a deck. You can make the screen longer of course, just add more posts.

Also, the privacy lattice at Lowe's has some very small openings,
