Suggestions for LOOKING good in FL heat?

I am in Disney now and it is HOT. 93 hot (hot for may at least). I sweat from my head so I have been wearing the visor every day and been fine. Also wearing full makeup because I am strange about that (I like to see myself in the mirror looking somewhat like me even when hot). Mac makeup - my eye makeup has been perfect every day after 12 hours and most of my face is good (I wear studio fix powder foundation). Since my hair tends to go 'fro when sweaty or humid, I have been going with it and curling it each morning then spray the heck out of it - then into the visor. Remarkably I have had a decent look at the end of each day (10 - 12 hour days). Now I started with brown hair with highlights and am going back blonde I think from it baking in the sun with all that hairspray :) but it looks good!

So i am excited about the Philosophy sunscreen and feel i just must have it lol :rotfl:. I also like the evian spray for refreshers... So a nice routine would be... sunscreen in the morning, and then when one begins to get hot and sweaty, break in a shaded or air conditioned area and when skin begins to stop pouring, use the blotting sheets (or toliet seat covers ) as they do not work well if your skin is wet or sweaty. Then when leaving the shade or air-conditioning and skin begins to feel that dratted again, spray on a little bit of the evian spray and you should feel very refreshed and less greas-ified and gross. Thats my plan for August!

I have very curly hair that frizzes in the hot sun. I went and got my hair cut short and put in hightlights for the very first time. It actually changed the texture of my hair. I am hoping I won't have to deal with the frizzies when I leave for Disney this Thursday.

As far as make up at Disney, I have dry skin so I have to put moisturizer on face and do a little eye liner and lip gloss. I don't worry about anything else because the sun brings out my freckles.

Most folks recommend cotton, but I tend to disagree. Cotton absorbs moisture, so the more you sweat, the most sweaty your clothing gets, and because of the humidity, the cotton doesn't dry at all. Since the sweat on your clothing can't evaporate very well, your body will continue to sweat more trying to cool itself down.

I purchased camping-friendly clothing that wicks moisture and is breathable...Exofficio Dryflylite shirts, REI pants....even wicking underware. The clothing pulls the sweat away from your body which will make you feel cooler. They dry very quickly, though that will be somewhat less effective because of the humidity. But at least with the wicking material, the sweat is pulled away from your body, which makes you cooler, and you won't sweat as much (you'll still sweat though).

If you don't like the camping look, all the major athletic brands (Nike, Adidas, Reebok, etc) make workout clothing that wicks moisture and helps keep you cool. IMO these aren't as effective as the camp/world travel clothing, but still gets the job done.

I also carry a MSR packtowel to wipe the sweat that does happen....they make face sized towels that are only 8"x8" square. They dry very quickly and you can throw them in the wash afterwards.

A few years ago, a friend made these suggestions, and it really saved me during the humid summers in Southeast Asia. While I was still hot, I felt alot better in the camp clothing than in a cotton t-shirt (brought some but couldn't stand it). I also looked perfectly fine in my photos, no sweaty armpits, and not like I had wilted in the sun.

Neutrogena also makes a nice one - Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock - available in different SPF's, up to SPF 85.

I live in a year round hot climate - the Neutrogena sunblock is the only one I can stand for daily use! It's lightweight, non-sticky, with a pleasant scent and works like a dream. Our DD's dermatologist recommended it and I've fallen in love! I've used the SPF 45 and the SPF 70. Both were very effective.

Check out the Amazon link below for pricing for the SPF 85 version:

Hope this helps!

I'm gonna give this a try. I've been thinking about this SAME topic as I'll be there in AUG!! I'm not planning on wearing any makeup, other than waterproof mascara, 1st part of the day. We're breaking from 12-4 each day. After we hit the pools to cool off, I'm planning on showering again and putting makeup on. We have some nice dinner ressies. This is a great idea for me. Anytime a Dermatologist reccomends, I'm all ears! ;)

"Clean and Clear" brand oil blotting sheets. I still have oily skin at age 47, and use these things all the time. They're wonderful!

You might want to bring makeup remover wipes (as you suggested) and sunscreen for a mid-day freshen-up. It make a huge different when it's so humid.

Many people go without makeup at WDW, but I pretty much wear my "regular" minimal makeup. I use a stick foundation (Max Factor) on my red spots (nose and cheeks) and under my eyes, and powder all over. Then just mascara and lip gloss. Have to use the stick foundation - I have pretty ruddy skin (broken capillaries) and that's the best thing I've found to cover it.

Lots of people swear by Bare Minerals, but I didn't find that it had enough coverage for me. (Maybe I'm not applying it right, though - I don't know!)

One last tip: don't rely on your makeup as your only sunscreen - you'd have to coat your entire face with makeup evenly to get a good SPF, and how many people wear that much makeup? Better to use a sunscreen (or better yet, a tinted sunscreen) with makeup over it. Who needs a sunburn?

Thank you for the tips- I guess I won't have to sepnd much time getting ready in the morning!

Another Philosophy fan here! :thumbsup2 Great stuff! Their cleanser is particularly great....no fragrance and you can use it to take off eye makeup without fear of tears. The Supernatural products are wonderful - the blush comes in the same type container as the foundation.

Personally, while at WDW, I wear minimal makeup. Just waterproof mascara (I have blond eyelashes; my eyes would disappear if I did not wear something!;)), lipstick/gloss (protects the lips too) and maybe some tinted moisturizer w/SPF. In the summer, eye makeup just melts right off me, except for my mascara. :sad2: A good haircut about a week or two before the trip helps a lot too. For the frizzies, I have found two products that work well - John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon (in drugstores) and Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream (a bit pricey, but a little goes a LONG way; my tube has lasted me quite a while). And I sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch(Johnson & Johnson lavender-scented) on before I head outside; helps keep me a little cooler.

After spending significant time straightening my hair and applying makeup, I walked out of our room to smoldering heat, only to get caught in a sudden downpour, by then I was frizzy and my makeup was gone. I proceeded to get soaked on Splash Mountain and then dd decided to drip her Mickey Ice Cream all over my leg while we waited for the parade all the while sweating like a pig. :crazy2:

The next day I woke up, showered, threw on some sunscreen, waterproof mascara and put the hair up in a ponytail and off we went. It was a battle I knew I would never win.

I think I laughed straight for 10 minutes- :rotfl::rotfl: I LOVE IT.. Esp. the ice cream dripping part!

This is my routine: Hair in a messy bun on top of my head ((the kind that looks like you MEANT to have it messy looking)) maybe a ribbon or something in it? Visor was a good idea!!

No foundation make-up, it just clogs the pores that are trying to sweat their lights out! I highly recommend the oil-blotting sheets- they are cheap & it was a GREAT tip! I use them around my house all the time. ((We live in LOUISIANA. Ugh!!))

Mascara is a plus for me, personally, but if you are worried about smudging, get the waterproof kind!! Maybe a soft shimmer powder just as a light brush over the face, so it catches w/ the sun!! Nothing too heavy!!

Something a *little* extra I do to bring a little glamour to my face: (:lmao:) Little earrings.. Just a little something extra to bring a little "Hey, at least I tried" to my face! :rotfl:

&That is basically it! Now, if we are going to dinner or something once the sun goes down, then I try a little harder! HAHA!

& always, always sun block!

Do the blotting sheets wipe off your makeup?

No, they don't -- they just blot up the oil without disturbing your makeup. Whoever invented these things was a genius! They work really well - I get an oily forehead by mid-day, and they totally soak up the oil.

The nice thing about using them is that you're not adding an extra layer of makeup (like you would if you powdered your shiny face!) -- you''re simply removing the oil.

For those of you looking for a good frizz product (curly or straigt, fine or thick) I swear by Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. It is the best thing on the planet and reccomend it to almost any of my clients. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it because it works for anyone and smells awesome. You can also try a tad on your legs after shaving and it gives you that dewy glow with no greasy or sweaty feeling or sparkle or glitter. If you know a cosmetologist, they can get it for you for much cheaper, but most of the time if you just purchased on your own, it would run around $16 but way so worth it!

Forgot to say it can be used wet or dry and can be cocktailed with any other product you aleady use (like a curl creme or volume gel, what have you). :lovestruc

Last year when I went in August, I ended up with eyes stinging after a downpour and Kali rapid and Splash Mountain ride - can't figure out if it was my Aveeno Sensitive skin sunscreen or my Olay moisturizer. Can anyone recommend a sunscreen that won't sting my eyes when water gets in them?

The eye irritation you're describing could also be caused by hair products. In Barbados, we had an upsurge of eye complaints right after our "carnival" (known as Kadooment) last summer. It rained very heavily and many women revellers had to seek medical attention - the doctors concluded that it was conjuctivitis, caused by the gels and other hair products running into the eyes during the downpours!

If you're concerned about the sunscreen, maybe a waterproof sunscreen might be a better option.

What Breezysmom said was exactly how I was! Hair and makeup all done the first day. Second day hair was pulled back and only wore mascara. However, I did notice (for me) it was easier to do hair and make up for the day at Epcot. There are sooo many buildings that are air conditioned that I didn't feel like I was outside near as much as the other parks. It was just easier to keep cool there.

Wow Timzagain - I never would have thought about the hair products causing stinging, but it makes total sense! I was wondering why all of a sudden my moisturizer would start bothering me! Now the tough part - I absolutely need to use mousse in my hair, so is there any brand of mousse that might not have the ingredients that caused the stinging??!! :confused3

I have a cute pixie hair cut so I put some product in it ,let it air dry, then piece it out with some hair clay. I do do full makeup ( even in the heat and humidity) and it does not budge or sweat off...I simply rely on layering ...sunscreen( neutrogena dry block or anthelios) , Primer ,mineral foundation, bronzer, eyeshadow, ( love Stila Kitten it looks great with tanned skin) ,shadow liner ,mascara and lip gloss.Add a cute pair of earrings, some nice sunglasses and it is cool yet chic even in the Florida oven.
