My daughter and I are going to be visiting Disneyland in May next year. She is a Type 1 diabetic and this will be the first trip we have done since she was diagnosed.

We will be adjusting her insulin to allow her to eat a lot of the treats while we are there (can't visit DL and not get a churro!) but one thing that can spike her sugar levels fast is normal soda - so we avoid that and go for versions that have no or low sugar.

Looking on the menus I can see that they have Diet Coke at a lot of the restaurants which will help, but what about the 'specialty drinks' - things like a root beer float or the drinks that come with a glow cube- do they have low sugar versions of those?

I see that a lot of the glow cube ones talk about Minute Maid 'light' lemonade or punch, but as we are from NZ I'm not sure if that means low sugar or something else.

Thanks for your help and any tips or ideas!!

You should be able to order a Diet Coke with flashing ice cubes. You should be able to order a float with Diet Coke.

That being said sugary drinks are everywhere. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We have a rule of one soda a day at dinner time and we ask the waiter to bring it with the meal and not before.

When Cozy Cones first opened they could make their drinks that contained Sprite with soda water. The flavors themselves still contain sugar, but that would cut down. I've noticed that the soda water has been replaced by Coke Zero at a few places, though I'm not sure about the Cozy Cones specifically, so you can still ask. Most non-alcoholic specialty drinks are mostly fruit juice. You can tweak some things at Starbucks to be nearly sugar free, but they don't have mugs and glow cubes. You can usually pay for specialty mugs and get the drink on the side or substitute a diet soda.

Try bringing water bottles with Crystal Light packets to flavor the water. My aunt is diabetic and brings a Mio squeezer and orders water at all the restaurants and adds the drops of flavor to her water. As a PP said using soda water instead of Sprite cuts down on the sugar. At all TS restaurants they should have soda water. My personal favorite is soda water and a splash of cranberry with 2 limes.

Thanks everyone - good to know we can ask for alternatives in most situations :) We will be bringing in some snacks and things as well.
